Mr. Richard Ngatia’s Manifesto for the Presidential Bid of the Kenya
National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI) 2019 - 2021 ii
My Message to the members of KNCCI
My Name is Richard Ngatia and I am the outgoing Chairman of the Kenya National
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) - Nairobi County. I am also the
Managing Director and CEO of Megascope Healthcare (K) Ltd, a distributor
of medical equipment and devices. Megascope is a solution provider for
turnkey health care related projects.
I am offering my self to be elected as President of the Kenya National Chamber
of Commerce and Industry.
I have had the privilege of being exposed to the dynamics of commerce and
industry locally, regionally and internationally over the years. In the process, I
have obtained crucial knowledge on global best practice in matters of commerce
and industry. This inspires me to invest my time and to share the insights of the
exposure I have gained thus far in modernizing the Kenya National Chamber
of Commerce and Industry. My ultimate desire is to
make the Chamber more responsive to the demands of a
markedly globalized trading environment of the 21st Century.

My fulfillment will come from assisting all current

and aspiring entrepreneurs and industrialists to find
their footing in business.

Aspirant - President,
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry 2019 - 2022.
Appreciation
I acknowledge and commend the
present leadership of the Kenya National
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(KNCCI) for revamping the Chamber
and starting the journey of restoring its
glory all within a very short period of time.

In particular, I appreciate and unreservedly

thank my dear brother and friend,
Kiprono Kittony, without whom, the
Chamber would not be where it is
today. Because of the commendable job
Kiprono and his team have done thus
far it is possible to envision a more
progressive Chamber in pursuit of a
bold agenda that will take this institution
to the next level.
With the hindsight, insights and
foresight I now have, I can confidently
assure our members—both current and
potential—that the transformative ideas
proposed herein will consolidate and
build upon the achievements of the
outgoing chairman’s tenure.

iv
It was so difficult to
access money from
a bank, to start our
business. First, we had
no landtitle to offer as
collateral. Secondly, we
found the interest rates
so high.

MY PLEDGES

2
Pledge 1: I will hasten the setting
up of a mechanism that will spur
the growth of numbers of
Chamber members.
Our Challenge
The Chamber membership base currently stands at
less than 20,000. However, there are more than 4 million
Small and Medium Businesses in Kenya that are
eligible for Chamber membership.

My commitment
I intend to:

6
Pledge 2: I will root for the improvement
of the quality of services delivered to
Chamber members.
Our Challenge
Currently, Chamber members are grappling with high
cost of finance, itself a big hindrance to business
growth. Other challenges include; lack of markets for
members’ goods and services as well as lack of
adequate entrepreneurial skills among members

My Commitment
I intend to: Although

Pledge 3: I will accelerate the mobilization of
financial resources for further development
of the Chamber and improve each of our
chapters.

The Challenge
Currently the Chamber lacks adequate financial
muscle to cater for crucial development activities.
Presently, there is too much dependency on the
income from membership dues and Certificates of
Origin (COO). These two sources of income cannot
finance desired cutting-edge Chamber programmes. We are
mainly relying
on income from
membership dues
and the issuance of
Certificates of
Origin. This is
unsustainable

Pledge 4: I will make every effort to expand
the capacities of Chamber Chapters and
strengthen the Chamber’s Economic
Diplomacy.

The Challenge
At present, some Chamber Chapters are not
functional, some lack offices while others are
understaffed. Some even lack financial means to
serve our esteemed members.

Pledge 5: I will enhance the Chamber’s advocacy
role as a preliminary measure towards
strategically repositioning it to win solid
recognition locally, regionally and internationally.

The Challenge
At the moment, the Chamber is clearly not the premier
and preferred private sector representative in Kenya. Its
thunder has been snatched by the likes of KEPSA and
KAM. It is time the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce
and Industry reclaimed its place of honour as the most
coveted body to represent and champion commercial and
industrial interests of Kenyans.
