Rationale:

Eucheuma spinosum/denticulatum (guso) is a macroalgae cultured in the Philippines. This macroalgae is

abundant with carbohydrates which can be processed to produce liquid biofuel. Biofuel from seaweeds
offer eco-friendly benefits, one example is that it is carbon-neutral. Seaweeds takes carbon dioxide for
their photosynthesis; and so, if the fuel extracted from seaweeds is burned, they will release the same
amount of carbon dioxide they have used. This makes biofuel from seaweeds a carbon-neutral and this
could minimize air-pollution.

We had come up to the idea of extracting biofuel from seaweeds that is cultivated here in the Philippines
and that is Eucheuma spinosum. There are various processes can be used to extract lipid from this
seaweed, but we will be using fermentation process with baker's yeast as catalyst.

Methodology:

The process for extracting biofuel from eucheuma spinosum starts from collecting seaweeds. The
collected seaweeds will then undergo fermentation with baker's yeast. After fermenting the seaweeds,
the pigment will then be extracted and refined to produce biofuel. The biofuel collected will be tested
for efficiency. It will be used as a substitute fuel for power generation.

Objectives:

1. To extract biofuel from eucheuma spinosum through fermentation with the use of baker's yeast.

2. To produce a carbon-neutral and renewable energy source.

3. To produce an efficient biofuel that can be used as a substitute to harmful and non-renewable energy
source

Conceptual Framework:

Eucheuma spinosum----->baker's yeast------> fermentation-----> ethanol
