Comparative Analysis Essay

In my economic class we were required to complete a college plan for my senior defense

portfolio. Doing this research has prepared me more because it led me to discover relevant

information about the universities that I want to attend to. The two universities that I’m applying

to is University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of California Irvine (UC

Irvine). In comparing both colleges and based on all the research that I collected, I’ve decided to

make UCLA my first choice than UC Irvine because of tuition, demographics, and logistics.

In addition, I decided to make UCLA my first choice than UC Irvine because of tuition.

The tuition for UCLA is $16, 847 for a year and books and supplies are $1,509. For room and

board is about $15,441, transportation is about $867, and loan fees is around 70-80 dollars. By

adding all these together you get an estimate of $34,736. For UC Irvine tuition is about $11,502

for a year and books and supplies is about $1,357. In UC Irvine transportation is $1,472, for

room and board is $14,861 and the loan fees is about 70-80 dollars. Adding all the budget for UC

Irvine gives you an estimate of $29,272. UCLA has always been my dream school and even

though it’s more expensive than UC Irvine I would rather go to a school that would benefit me

more for my future career.

Additionally, another reason I decided to make UCLA my first choice because of

demographics. At UCLA 56.7% of its classes with fewer than 20 students and the student faculty

ratio is about 18:1.They also have 1,000 clubs and student organization that can help students

participate in any extracurricular activity. The admission rate for UCLA is 17% and graduation is

about 91%. This school gives you an option whether to live on campus or not but students living

on campus is about 43% and living off campus is about 52%. At UC Irvine 55.1% of its classes

with fewer than 20 students and the student faculty ratio is about 18:1. They offer many clubs

and programs for students. The admission rate for UC Irvine is 39% and the graduation rate is

86%. In this school 61% of students live on campus and 39% of students live off campus. In

comparing both colleges and all the information that I gather from researching from both school,

UCLA is still my first option because they have plethora of clubs and programs they have, and

also UCLA has a high graduation rate.

Furthermore, UCLA is still more first option because of logistics. UCLA housing is about

$15, 441 and at UC Irvine is $14, 861. Even though that the housing for UCLA is more

expensive than UC Irvine I would rather pay for a school that would best suit me. Transportation

for UCLA is $867 and for UC Irvine is $1,442. You can see the big difference for transportation

between UCLA and UC Irvine. UCLA is located in California specifically Westwood, Los

Angeles and the weather is warm during the day and fresh during the night. UC Irvine is also

located in California but especially in Irvine and the weather there can be cloudy, warm, and

sometimes with rain. I would still consider UCLA as my first option because the school is close

to a hospital which it can help benefit me when I do my internship in the hospital.

In conclusion, investigating research about UCLA and UC Irvine has shown me how

these schools can benefit me for my future career. After researching on the universities I have

found that these universities have my major which is biology. Although both schools have my

major UCLA is my dream school and I hope that I get accepted there. This schools would best

suit me because in the future I want to be an Orthopedic Surgeon and also they have hospitals

near them where I could do my internship and residency. Overall, UCLA is my first choice over

UC Irvine because of tuition, demographic and logistics.
