College students of the 21st century are stuck on traditional learning rather than

constructive learning. Isn’t college, or even school in general, supposed to be a place of

LEARNING and using their mind? Excellent Sheep encourages students to seek knowledge

instead of the highest GPA, strive for higher education, and transform into a well-rounded,

sociable person.

Today’s students tend to work for the highest grade point average rather than seeking

knowledge. Students are held to incredibly high standards by their parents and counselors to

achieve perfect grades. “Elite students today are equivalent to American athletes: coached and

drilled from adolescence, and whatever bar you put in front of them, they’re trained to achieve

it.” Students tend to get so caught up in pursuing the best grades, more than half the time they

don’t know the material they’re studying. After speaking with a student Deresiewicz said,

“Everything’s so fast paced she doesn’t have time to think about what they’re studying.” That

goes to show how fast paced everything is and the huge toll it puts on students. Working for the

best GPA rather than truly seeking knowledge is a horrible way to go about education because

without truly knowing what they’re learning, it will not benefit their future at all. Genuinely

seeking knowledge in comparison to getting the best GPA will show an impeccable difference.

Students who strive for higher education are more successful.“Some say they ended up in

their profession because of someone else’s expectations,” a quotation from Professor

Deresiewicz. Due to the pressure of parents and counselors, students have everything on the line

that they feel pressured into getting the perfect grades and GPA. Yes, they are getting the grades,

but more than half the time they do not truly know the material. ‘Higher education’ is curiosity,

moral courage, and passionate weirdness. This generation is filled with polite, praise-addicted,

perfect human beings- as Deresiewicz puts it ‘Excellent Sheep.’ Students are GLUED to

traditional learning concepts rather than constructive learning, when constructive learning will

lead to their passion and prepare them for their futures.

The next stage is to become a transformed, well-rounded young adult ready to start their

new career. About 86% people graduate from college not knowing how they want to approach a

 rofessor
career or new life. College is about finding your true self. In Excellent Sheep, P

Deresiewicz encourages students to be curious, passionate, to be WEIRD. To stand out and not

blend themselves in with the “social norm.” Excellent Sheep e ncourages students to not only find

ourselves, but to be successful and truly passionate about the career they choose.

Professor Deresiewicz and his book Excellent Sheep continues to encourage students to

seek knowledge, strive for a higher education, and to become a well-rounded young adult. This

book will change the outlook of life and education for young adults. Professor Deresiewicz

encourages students to find a sense of purpose and forge their own path.
