Hyun Gu Kang

Problem and Need: Although falls are common and awareness about falls as a public
health problem is out there, many students, particularly in Kinesiology, are not actively
engaged with working with older adults. We need to train students in order to create a
workforce and a culture that will support older adults.

Mission:
to train students to working with older adults concerned about fall risk
=> reduce falls now and later.
Our Project: A fall prevention program for the community, run jointly by Kinesiology
and Nursing students under the supervision of faculty

My primary customer: As university faculty, we serve the students who will seek
employment and need to have the skills to needed in the community.

My supporting customers: older adults of the community and senior centers

Students value: Exercise, real-life experiences, make connections with future employers,

Older adults value: independence, health, quality of life. connection to the young adults
and community, each other, health

Senior Center directors/employees/anyone else who want to implement a fall prevention

program.

Project Results: To create a fall prevention program at San Marcos Senior Center
The program has the following goals:

Student Learning Outcomes:

After the training/course, students will be able to:
1. identify and assess fall risk and risk factors in older adults in the community
2. interpret risk factors in a group and design program for them
3. run and assess a fall prevention program in the community
4. develop opinions on their role in addressing fall risk in the community as
professionals
5. see life issues from the perspective of older adults with fall risk burdens

Community Outcomes:
After the training/course, older adult will have
1. higher self-efficacy, happiness, better mood
2. reduction in fall risk factors (and maybe falls)
3. contact with young adults/ greater lifespace/engagement with community
Scholarship Outcomes:

1
After training, the faculty will have
1. data on joint education programs
2. data on program efficacy
3. data on gait, balance and other behavior
4. Pool of older adults interested in interacting with the university for research
projects for external grants, etc.

Action Plan:

In the long term:

1. run regular fall prevention exercise classes for the community members
2. run regular fall prevention information sessions for seniors and family members
3. run regular fall risk screening program for seniors and family members
