Signature Assignment

The article I used for my analysis showed how far science has come and how it has the

ability to affect lives in many ways. From convenience to saving lives, science is such a large

part of our modern world and research, such as the bone repairment study, can change the way

medicine is practiced. While I recognize the role of science as a means to improve life, the article

did make me see the testing process in a different way. I have always been against animal testing

but the article I used as well as several articles I read in my search showed that sometimes animal

models are necessary if a study relates to health, for now. There was no evidence that the

scientists involved in the study were a part of a public policy debate; a lot of that may have had

to do with how early on in the research process the scientists were. As the trials continue and

scientists must test their findings on human subjects, it is likely there will be some debate– as

there generally is with medical tests and advancements. Another contribution to the lack of

public policy debate may be due to the research team being that of a university. The researchers

are strictly looking into a medical process, not looking to market it, at least, not yet.

The article itself did not relate the research to other disciplines, however, the subject

could be related to many. There has been a large moral debate on the use of stem cells. While the

article did not discuss this, it would be interesting to see the political and public opinion on this

unfold as the research continues. This discovery of bone cells causing rapid repairation could
change the lives of many if it became a staple in the medical world, however, it would have to be

passed by policy makers as well as the medical community.

A theme throughout this course has been the role of science. The role of science is to

improve life and society. This course has highlighted this. I have learned just how much science

has done for the human body and society as a whole. From vaccines to diagnoses, it is hard to

imagine what life would be like today without the scientific strides that have contributed to

quality life. Something that surprised me about this course was how much incite it gave into

human nature; even after vaccines have been proven safe, there are still people who are afraid;

even after football has been shown to cause CTE, it is still a popular sport; while humans are

aware of their footprint on this planet thanks to scientific proof, they continue to support policies

and use resources that can damage the planet. Science has greatly improved the world, however,

the population needs to listen in order for science to completely fulfill its role.
