Guten Tag! Welcome back to Taplingua German. In this lesson we are going to learn:
1. How to understand given directions.
2. How to ask for help when lost and use the question word “wo”
3. The pronunciation of /tsch/ and /ch/

As a tourist if you get lost you must be able to ask for help, we use the phrase “Entschuldigung!”
(excuse me!) to get a person’s attention. To explain that you are lost, like Frank in the dialog, we
say “ich habe mich verloren” (I am lost).

Be careful with your Pronunciation of “Entsch” in “Entschuldigung” ( Excuse me), the sound of
“t-s-c-h” is like “tshh”. Equally, remember the
“ch” sound in “ich”(I) or “mich”(myself) = “ch” in the word “Loch”.

Repeat after me “Entschuldigung, ich habe mich verloren”(Excuse me, I am lost). Commented [1]: Formato karaoke

Or you may want to ask where something is, in the dialog Frank asks “Wo kann ich einen
Stadtplan finden?” (where can I find a map?).
“Wo” is a new word: it is the question word “where”. Repeat after me: “wo kann ich eine
Stadtplan finden?”. Commented [2]: Formato karaoke

We can use the same structure to ask to find anything or anywhere: “wo kann ich eine Apotheke
finden?” (where can I find a pharmacy?). “Wo” as we previously discussed, means “where”,
“kann” means and is pronounced like “can” in English and “finden” means “find”.
We may also hear “wo” when we tell someone that we are lost and they ask us where we want
to go, in the phrase “wo möchten Sie gehen?” (where would you like to go?).

Directions in German are very simple: “es ist links” (it’s on the left), “es ist rechts” (it’s on the
right) and “es ist geradeaus” (it’s straight on).
Repeat after me: “es ist links”... “es ist rechts”... “es ist geradeaus”. Now we can understand Commented [3]: Formato karaoke
“Sie müssen rechts/links abbiegen” (you need to turn right/left).

They can also say to you “Sie müssen die Straße überqueren” (you need to cross the street).
Let’s see an example from the dialog: “Es ist rechts von Marienplatz Straße. Sie müssen die
Straße überqueren” (It is on the right from Marienplatz Street. You have to cross the street).

To review, in this level we have learnt to understand given directions, to ask for help when lost
and use the question word “wo”, and the pronunciation of /tsch/ and /ch/.

Well done today! See you next time!
