Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson incorporates coding using high tech tools to enhance
student learning. This is a great way to incorporate learning for many different types of learners and will
allow students to be creative and engaged.
Engagement: Students are actively engaged by creating a scene or symbol from history and explaining why
it is important.
Representation: Different types of learners are represented by utilizing coding in this lesson.
Action and Expression: Students are actively choosing which event from Georgia history they wish to code
and in that way can express how they see the event and why they feel it was important in history.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will first be introduced to Scratch by watching a tutorial video and
instructions from the teacher. Students will then choose an event in Georgia history during the civil rights era
that they have enjoyed learning about and code a scene or symbol representing that event. They may add
sounds, special effects, or anything they may wish. Students will then write an explanation on why they chose
the event they did and how this scene or symbol they created represents it.
Teacher will walk about the room and facilitate during the lesson to answer any questions and assist when
needed.

Importance of technology: This lesson introduces coding to students and allows students to express
themselves through it as well as show their comprehension of a Georgia history event. The technology assists
students in this lesson and is a way for students to learn in different ways.

Inspiration (optional):
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Students and parents will fill out internet safety contracts. Students will
have gone through an internet safety workshop before the lesson. Students will not publish their creation to
the public, they will only show this creation to their parents and the teacher.
Coding and Computational Thinking
Reflective Practice: I think this lesson is a great introduction to coding for students. It is a way for students to
work with coding in an academic classroom and be creative as well. Technology is becoming a fundamental
aspect of every day life and it is important to implement it in the classroom as much as possible.
