Confidence Interval Estimates
The purpose of the confidence interval is to give us a range of values for our estimated
population parameter.
n = 2591 x = 514
𝑥 514
p = 𝑛 = 2591 = 19.84%
2.575∗.1984(1−.1984)
Margin of error 2591

Lower Bound: .17823

Upper Bound: .21856
We are 99% confident that the population proportion of yellow skittles is between (.17823,
.21856).
Construct a 95% confidence interval estimate for the true mean number of candies per
bag.
n = 46 a = 0.05 s = 12.31 Degree of freedom is 46-1 = 45
x = 2591 then x/n = 2591/46 = 56.33
Critical Value: .025 = 2.02+2.009/2 = 2.015
(2.015)12.31
E= = 3.66
√46

Upper Bound: 59.99

Lower Bound: 52.67
We are 95% confident that the true value of the population mean number of candies is between
(52.67, 59.99).
Hypothesis Test
The purpose of the hypothesis test is to determine whether there is enough statistical evidence in
favor of a certain hypothesis about a parameter.
Ho: p = .20 H1: p = .20 a = .05
−0.01
n = 2591 x = 491 2591(.20) (1-.20) = 414.56 >10 = -1.27
.007858258

Fail to Reject
P = .18 > .05 Fail to Reject because there is insufficient evidence to claim p is two tailed to .20.
Arnold Martinez

Use a .01 significance level to test the claim that the mean number of candies in a bag of
skittles is 55.
Ho: m = 55 H1: m = 55 a = .01 shape is two tailed
n = 46
s = 12.31
56.33−55 1.33
x = 56.33 x – m/ s/sqrt. n = 12.31√46 = 1.77 = .7514

Reflection
The confidence interval is a range of numbers that our estimate falls within. We were given all
the appropriate information for the x value, sample size and level of confidence to be able to find
the different intervals that we were asked to look for. With only two types of errors found in the
hypothesis testing, both were a type II error. This meant that we did not have enough sufficient
evidence to reject the null hypothesis. For the sample to be better everyone in the population
would need to partake in the study. The new data would change the mean and standard deviation.
Lastly, there is an average mean of 55 candies per bag and 20% in each bag was red.
