 4.12.3 Analyze their own artwork in relation to historical, aesthetic, and cultural
influences.
Objective(s): The student will be able to demonstrate the influence of Mexican Indian Huichol
culture in art by designing and creating their own Huichol yarn painting and will individually
describe how each element used in their painting is significant to the Huichol culture with 90%
accuracy.
Materials:
 The book Visions of a Huichol Shaman by Peter T. Furst
 Masonite bases (1ft x 1ft)
 Black markers
 Beeswax
 Cheese grater
 Heat gun
 Yarn
Procedure:
1. Introduce: Visions of a Huichol Shaman by Peter T. Furst and ask, “Does a person’s
culture influence their art? Give me examples of how your culture influences your art
style.”
2. Read: Students take turns reading aloud while tossing a ball of yarn to one another,
creating a yarn web.
3. Discuss: The students will be divided into 5 groups to discuss the following questions for
10 minutes. The teacher will call on each of the groups to answer one of the questions.

Question 1- Explain the significance of the beeswax used in the Huichol yarn paintings.
Question 2- Give 3 examples of symbolism frequently used in the Huichol yarn paintings.
Question 3- Describe the relationship between deities and Huichol art.
Question 4- Explain how yarn painting became such an important aspect to the Huichol
culture.
Question 5- Imagine this is the dominant art style in present day United States. Describe
3 images you believe would be reoccurring in our yarn paintings. Why?
Activities:
1. Working individually, students will create their own yarn painting containing 2 elements
relating to the Huichol culture.
2. Students will write a paragraph describing the elements they used in their yarn painting
and the significance to the Huichol culture.
Evaluation: Teacher will check for completion and fulfillment of requirements of the art
painting, as well as the 1 paragraph description of the elements used in their yarn paintings and
their significance to the Huichol culture.
