Some people believe that studying at university or college is the best route to a
successful career, while others believe that it is better to get a job straight after school.
Discuss both views

ANSWER:
Upon graduating from high school, the young often wonder whether they ought to keep on
studying further or not. Many people believe that continuing to study at a university or
college will be the best way to guarantee a successful career, whereas others believe that
working right after school is a better option.
Working straight after graduation is beneficial in some ways. Firstly, by working, young
people will be able to earn money as soon as possible, and since they will likely be mature
enough, they will be able to live independently on their own income. It is also common
knowledge that having a job leads to even more maturity. Secondly, a person who chooses to
get a job instead of pursuing higher education is likely to progress rapidly in their career.
This may help them to obtain a lot of real experience and skills in their chosen profession.
On the other hand, there are a variety reasons why people tend to choose to continue their
education after high school. First, a college education prepares young people to meet higher-
level qualifications, which is what most employers expect these days. University graduates
usually get a much higher salary than those without a university education. Furthermore, the
job market is becoming more and more competitive and nowadays people are well-advised to
get a degree, as hundreds of applicants often chase the top jobs. Having a degree is an
obvious advantage that university graduates have. In Vietnam, students who graduate with
an engineering degree are highly paid and have an easy time getting a good job.
In conclusion, it seems evident that both working right after school and choosing to continue
higher-level studies each have their own unique advantages.

Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not
popular in many places? How can its popularity be increased?
Essay Plan:
Introduction: introduce topic, agree that cycling is environmentally friendly. Need to
consider why it is not more popular and what we can do to make it more popular.
Paragraph 2: answer first question:
topic sentence: there are reasons why cycling is not more popular.
Idea [1] need to be fit to cycle – support idea: goint up hills, bad weather
Idea [2] danger of using busy roads – support idea: children cycling to school
Idea [3] cycling takes longer than using a car – support idea: people have busy lives and are
always in a hurry
[1] Paragraph 3: answer second question:
topic sentence: it is easy to make cycling more popular
Idea [1] people can improve their fitness - support idea: begin with cycling short distances
Idea [2] campaigns to promote health benefits of cycling – support idea: workplaces provide
facilities to encourage employees to cycle to work
Idea [3] discourage motorists and encourage cyclists – support idea: congestion charge for
cars, cycle lanes for cyclists
Conclusion: we can encourage more people to travel by bike.

ANSWER
It is obvious that cycling is more eco-friendly than other forms of private transport. There
are some reasons for this trend and some effective measures can be taken to overcome the
reluctance of the public to use bikes and to make the bicycle a more popular means of
transport

There are several reasons why cycling as an activity is not more popular. Firstly, cycling
demands a reasonable level of physical fitness to cope with a journey of any length, going
up hills and perhaps confrontingbiting winds and rain. Secondly, many people are put off
cycling by the danger of using busy roads. Although many children used to cycle to school,
the roads were much less hazardous than fifty years ago, and today cyclists have to confront

heavy traffic. Finally, journeys by bike generally take longer than travelling by car, which is
a major factor in the busy and stressful lives which most people seem to lead nowadays.

With a little public and private initiative, the popularity of cycling could easily be increased.
Anyone can build up their fitness, beginning with using a bike for short journeys to school,
to work or to the shops. Campaigns in the media, in schools and workplaces could promote
the health benefits of cycling, and offices and factories should provide changing facilities and
hot showers for employees arriving cold or wet by bike. Authorities must discourage
motorists from using their cars by introducing congestion charges, as in London, reducing
traffic on the roads and encouraging more people to use bikes. If more city cycle lanes are
also constructed, these will keep cyclists safe and speed up journey times.

In conclusion, with planning and investment it should be possible to increase the popularity
of cycling, especially for all those short trips to work or school.

(03/11/2018) There are more workers who work from home and more students who study
from home. This is because computer technology is more and more easily accessible and
cheaper. Do you think this is a positive or negative development.

(Note: Khá giống đề 26/4/2014 đã có trong tài liệu của lớp học offline và IELTS package)

Essay Plan:

 Introduction: refer to the task statement. Opinion: it is mainly positive

 Paragraph 2: negative aspects (1) physical – eye strain, headaches (2) personal
development – lack of personal contact> fewer social skills, less interaction to
develop skills or be stimulated
 Paragraph 3: positive aspects (1) eliminate commuting time (2) opens up new
job opportunities – example lamchame.com (3) gain qualifications at less cost
 Conclusion: it is a positive development on the whole.

Essay:

It is true that computer technology is now less expensive and more accessible than ever
before. As a result of these advances in technology, working or studying from home has
become a realistic option. While I accept that there are both positive and negative aspects, I
would argue that it is on the whole a positive development.

On the one hand, there are some disadvantages of working or studying at home. In terms
of physical well-being, sitting for hours glued to a computer screen may carry more potential

health risks, such as eye strain or headaches caused by waves from computers or wifi devices.
From the perspective of personal development, employees or students in isolation are less
likely to have social skills, compared with those who acquire knowledge and experience
through personal contact with colleagues. This will almost inevitably make it more difficult
to enhance their level of job performance or to be stimulated in their studies. These negative
aspects cannot be overlooked.

On the other hand, I believe that the computer is an invaluable tool for work or study in a
home environment. Firstly, an immense amount of time and expense is saved when it is no
longer necessary to travel to a place of work or study. Staying at home eliminates
commuting times, and work or study can be fitted around family commitments. Secondly,
working online from home opens up new opportunities to earn a living. For example,
lamchame.com is one of the biggest websites in Vietnam, where housewives can sell
products and make a profit. Finally, distance learning online enables many students to gain
qualifications at a fraction of the cost of attending university.

In conclusion, although there are some negative points, I consider that this development is
largely positive.

(10/11/2018) Some people think governments should spend money on faster means of
public transport. However, others think money should be spent on other priorities
(such as the environment). Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

(Note: Khá giống đề 26/4/2014 đã có trong tài liệu của lớp học offline và IELTS package)

Essay Plan:
 Introduction: refer to the question statement. Own opinion – agree that
other priorities are more important.
 Paragraph 2: it is useful to spend on faster means of public transport – to
reduce the use of cars (1) in cities – park and ride; integrated transport;
light rail systems: Hong Kong (2) fast inter-city trains: Japan’s bullet
trains
 Paragraph 3: agree that other priorities are more important – the
environment (1) global warming and human extinction (2) reduce
pollution – health benefits of clean air and water (3) investment in
renewable energy – reducing carbon footprint
 Conclusion: although it is good to spend of faster public transport,
spending on the environment is a more important priority

Essay:
It is true that some people believe that there should be increased spending by
national and local authorities on a faster public transport network. While this would
provide useful benefits, I agree with those who consider that government resources
should be allocated to more important priorities, especially protection of the
environment.
On the one hand, investment in faster means of public transport would, above all,
encourage a reduction in the use of private cars. In terms of travelling in the city,
traffic grinds to a halt during peak commuting times. Many cities have reduced this
problem by spending public money on park and ride schemes, integrated transport
systems or have followed the example of Hong Kong in introducing light rail transit

systems. Such steps have speeded up journey times by easing traffic flow. From a
nationwide perspective, faster inter-city rail services, such as Japan’s famous bullet
trains, have also encouraged motorists to leave their cars at home.
On the other hand, I concur with the view that it is more important for governments
to prioritize expenditure on other areas, particularly the environment. Firstly, the
consequences of an ecological crisis will be far-reaching. If global warming
continues, for example, humanity faces the possibility of extinction and no cost is too
high for governments to pay in order to prevent such a catastrophe. Secondly,
spending on reducing pollution will bring benefits for health, especially in cleaner air
and water. Finally, by providing funding for renewable energy, governments will be
able to meet their international obligations to reduce their carbon footprint.
In conclusion, although money should be spent on developing faster public transport,
I believe that public spending on other priorities such as the environment is more
important.
