“Reason for Joining as Intern in NHRC”

Me, being the citizen of this country, from my childhood, had seen and observed many issues
in our society. Starting from child labour and their abuse to torture on destitute and many more
had seemed to be there from time immemorial. And now that I have grown up, I understand
the sexual abuse done to women and the pain suffer by them. Every day, when I step out of my
house, I observe many labours working so hard for their living and this is a bitter truth that they
do not get what they deserve. These human rights violations are those which I personally
observe. Violations like custodial torture, manual scavenging, violence against women,
arbitrary arrest etc. are those which I know exist and are still in practise somehow. These human
rights violations had been flooded the country and there is no stopping of it.

Whenever I observe such human rights violations, all I can feel is sorrow and dejection. All the
human rights have been embodied under Indian Constitution. The government wanted the
citizens of country to live freely and with dignity but these violations had hampered the only
object of the Constitution. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) helps in refurbishing
this objective of the Indian Constitution. NHRC take actions against the complaints on the
violation of the human rights and try to prevent it. It also recommends measures for the better
implementation of the safeguards given under Constitution for human rights. It also undertakes
and promote research in the field of human rights which further helps in knowing about human
rights better. Other issues like terrorism, treaties, etc are also the major concerns of NHRC.
NHRC helps in preserving the human rights and try to diminish the human rights violations.
Human Rights are inherent and integral to a human and there are safeguards to it as well. As
the army protects us on the borders, the NHRC protects us from the violations of these rights.

Mahatma Gandhi had once said, “It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel
themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings” I totally agree with this
statement and therefore want to do internship under NHRC. I am always keen to learn and
know about human rights and therefore earlier I did my internship under PUCL, Delhi where I
attended many rallies and learned about human rights and the issues raising against them. Now
I want to learn how these human rights violations are treated and what are the measures to
diminish them. Human rights violations are something which are raising in our country due to
which it creates an obstacle in the growth and development of the country. I want to spread
awareness among the citizens regarding the same and therefore I want to learn more about
human rights and the human rights violations which is only possible if I get this golden
opportunity to get internship under NHRC. The creation of NHRC in India is an important
mechanism to strengthen Human Rights protection and I want to learn more about it.
