The newsletter for Caldy Sports Club Limited November 2010

The calendar year at Caldy Sports Club seems to be one of perpetual motion—a constant relay of activity
with one sport ending its season and another taking up the ‘ Paton baton’ to fulfil its dreams of success
from our glorious grounds. And current progress is looking good for bat and boot. Success in both the
Cricket and Rugby sections has brought with it renewed vigour, increasing membership and, we hope a
positive outlook for the future. Luckily our Club Chairmen do not turn over as fast as the seasons and
Caldy Sports Club has been fortu-
nate enough to have had Gary

Retirement at last …...

After 2 years as chairman of CSCL I am very glad to welcome my successor, Bob Baty,
to the position. Jane has asked me to muse on what has been achieved over the last
couple of years for inclusion in the excellent clubline.
In some ways I think a lot has been achieved and in other ways I feel a little disap-
pointed. The successes first. In my opinion as a committee we have tried to listen to
what the membership want – and the officers who have taken on positions have all
worked hard to improve things. The big aim was to make the building of a new club-
house a reality. However what became apparent was that it would be extremely difficult to borrow money or gain
grants when CSCL lived beyond it means every year and could not provide a business plan that would be approved
by a financial institution. The economic climate for the last 2 years has not helped but if we were honest no sensible
financial organisation would have lent money to us in any event. The steps we therefore took involved:

reducing our overheads where possible * increasing our margins

investing in the infrastructure of the club * putting CSCL on a stable financial footing
communicating more with the members

All sounds a lot easier than it was in reality. Previous editions of clubline have provided information on the specific
steps taken so I will not dwell on them but I am glad to say that the club is now on a much stronger financial footing
and over the next 2 years I am confident that we will be able to invest in the infrastructure as well as pay off the
overdraft.
The major disappointment has been the difficulty of moving the new club house project forward. A lot of effort has
been invested by a lot of people looking at various options but what became clear was that the first priority had to be
strengthening the finances. Hopefully going forward the plans can be revisited but this time we will have a far more
realistic chance of making progress.

Events at your club

I would like to thank all those who were on the CSCL
Nov committee for the last 2 years – and all the successes are
down to the time and commitments made by them – and I
wish Bob and the new committee all the best for the fu-
19th Caldy RFC ture. I am sure that with Bob’s great business experience
and the support of all on the committee that members will
Mini & Junior Autumn Ball see real steps forward. I would also like to thank the army
at Thornton Hall Hotel of volunteers who keep the club and the grounds going –
and make such a real difference – and hopefully CSCL
( see Caldy RFC website for details) will be in a position to support them further going forward
so that the club house can also be something we are all
proud of.

Taking up the reins ……

Bob Baty has now taken over the role of Chairman of CSCL form Gary Devaney.
Bob has been a member of the rugby section of the club since the early 1960’s, was a
regular first team player, and a member of the Cheshire Cup winning team of 1970.
Due to personal re-location Bob played at Chester rugby club in the mid 1960’s before
returning to the club in 1969.

He was a member of the rugby club committee for a number of years, serving as Chair-
man for a five year period from 1977 to 1982. During that period he was also Chairman
of the Sevens Committee, when the format was developed into a family event with the provision of fair ground ride at-
tractions and outdoor music.

During Bob’s time on the Committee, mini rugby was introduced to the Club in the early 1970s by Dai Adams whose
leadership and commitment provided the nucleus of the training and management structure which has provide the bed-
rock on which the successful mini section was founded.

Although Bob has maintained on-going membership and contact with the club he has been away from the Wirral since
the late 1980’s, but has recently returned following his retirement from South West Water where he was Chief Executive.

“Having had many years of enjoyment from my membership of Caldy Club, I am delighted to have the opportunity to
serve the club once again, and in taking over the Chairmanship of CSCL, I would just like to record both my own and the
club’s sincere thanks to Gary Devaney for the enormous contribution Gary has made to the club particularly over the last
12 years or so when he has been leading the club forward in a number of capacities . Well done Gary, and many
thanks”.

Caldy Cricket Club - A review of 2010

After our traditional slow start the first team made its customary recovery effort and did well to
finish 6th, on the way creating two league records in reaching the 300 landmark and Sunny Ghandi recording a
double century. Congratulations to him and to the captain who took his usual crop of wickets.

The second team surpassed previous performances in finishing second and thus gaining promotion to
st
the 1 division. Aftab Ahmed and Dave Kay at frequent intervals put in unplayable performances and were re-
sponsible for most of the opposition wickets. The team were led with passion by Gary Laycock and his delight
at gaining promotion shone like a beacon over Paton Field.

The 3rd and 4th teams finished exactly as they should have done, in that the 3rd XI ended up 10th with
181 points while the 4th XI finished just behind with 180 points. Two centuries from the 3rd team 111 not out for
Julian Higgs and 106 not out for Sajid Mahmood.

Congratulations to all and my thanks to all the captains for their input to the success of the club.

We were all shocked to hear of the death of Dave Stewart in the middle of the season and it became
obvious just what a huge part he had played in Caldy Cricket Club. He will be missed but I am sure not forgot-
ten.

Thwaites - still pulling strong

200 years on!
In the last two issues of Clubline we have featured
what you might describe as whippersnapper brews in the light
of this article in which we a take snapshot look at our long-time
faithful at the CSCL pumps - ‘Thwaites’.
I’m not sure if they had the saying ‘life begins at 40’
back in the early 1800s but for Daniel Thwaites it was a turning
point in his life and the axis on which the Thwaites family was to
pivot through many generations.
A one-third partnership in the Eanam Brewery,
Blackburn, in 1807 laid the foundation stones for one of the
greatest and enduring northern family empires with sole
Thwaites ownership from 1924.
The company passed through several generations,
often finding itself, as is the present case, in the operating
hands of the women of the family.
By the end of the 1800s Thwaites had become a limited company, but the real
expansion came between the First World War and the 1960s when a steady succession of
acquisitions cemented its position as a highly respected regional brewer and the national
recognition that came with two ‘Champion Beer of Britain’ awards in the 70s and 80s. The
past 200 years have seen the brewery adapt, modernise and progress to become the leading
brewer from the North of England.

New in the Thwaites line-up this month is ‘Autumn Spirit’

weighing in at 3.9%. An amber coloured hoppy beer with a
clean and fresh taste that stays dry to the finish. Sample a
pint at the Caldy Sports Club Bar and let Carla and Nick
know what you think.

‘Wainwright’
the new boy on the
Thwaites’ block enjoys a
tipple at his christening!
Modernise Thwaites might have done but the
dray horse will always be a relevant and
important part of the breweries past and present.
Any good in the second row Wainwright?
Neigh!
Shame!

Operational Budget Commentary

The Caldy Sports Club Limited (CSCL) exists to maintain:-

 the grounds for the playing of sport

There is also a duty to plan and facilitate the future development of the Club to meet the needs of the sections and member-
ship. This falls outside of the operational budget of CSCL
CSCL is currently financed by the income from the Bar and donations from senior members.
So, where do our earnings go?
The largest item of expenditure is bar supplies at 33% or €52,000
By far our largest overhead is that of Grounds Maintenance, it is the second largest expense again being 32% or €51,000.
Staff costs cover steward, Bar Staff and cleaning 15% or €24,000
Property costs, maintaining the fabric of the building 3% or €5,000
Power—electricity 5% or €8,000 * Insurances 3% or €5,000 * Banking costs 1% or €2,000 * Other costs 8% or €13,000

In the period we have budgeted to spend €10,000 on facility improvements
