January 14, 2019 (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Today was the start of the internship. At the Overview site, it is me, Ansley Harper, and

Mike Warren. All of us knew each other but not super well so it was a little nervous to know that

I am going to be spending eight hours a day for four days a week. Sadly, Nancy, the woman who

will be mainly in charge of our internship, was not in office today. The owner of the company,

Wanda, is very busy all the time so she gave us a project to work on through out the day. For this

project, we needed to create a PowerPoint over a health topic for those at the senior activities

center. There are many topics that could be discussed to senior citizens, but we decided to do our

PowerPoint over arthritis. This is a topic that many of the elder community have to deal with. We

added in different information about the two main types of arthritis, but wanted for the

presentation to be more ways to stop pain. So, we put in facts about exercises that are good for

those with arthritis, but also different sorts of foods that can help along with the main symptoms

and what they mean. The one thing that was highly stated in our community health class last

semester, is that when dealing with the older and younger generation, to keep things short and

sweet. People do no like to feel like they are being lectured during their free time. The only

downside about the day is that it does not take eight hours to do a presentation. So after we

finished we were just doing background research about the company and projects that we could

hopefully implement while we were here. It felt like a very long day with not a lot of structure so

it was slightly frustrating. I think all of us were expecting to jump in and constantly be told what

to do. But then, the more we discussed, it is our job to come up with things we want to do. So
either tomorrow or Wednesday (whenever Nancy is back), we will be running information by

her.

January 15, 2019 (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Second day of the internship is off to a better start. The main challenge has been getting

acclimated to waking up early and going all day. Nancy has not returned today which seemed to

kill all of our spirits a tad, because it meant that we would be sitting in the same room again

working on some sort of project. It is disappointing, but the nice thing is, we are getting good at

making presentations and will be able to place these into our e portfolio. We have been told that

the company has received some extra grant funds. So this money is going to go towards helping

more people be able to apply for the energy assistance program. Tomorrow, there will be around

one hundred people coming in to apply for the program. The applicants will then be reviewed by

the company to see if assistance is available to them. So, our job is to each create a sort of health

flyer/brochure to hand out to those that are coming in. I did mine on Influenza, Mike did his on

Obesity, and Ansley did hers on High Blood Pressure. These brochures contained different

information about the topics of our choice. My brochure mainly discussed what the flu was, the

different symptoms, where to get a flu shot, and then those who are at higher risk. All of our

flyers actually turned out very well and look very professional. The only thing is, this still did not

take the full amount of time. It does not take eight hours to make a brochure. So, after we

finished, we looked into some activities that we could possibly do with those at the senior citizen

home and also composed a mental list of questions that we needed to ask tomorrow once Nancy

returned, because we were all starting to go a little crazy in the room.

January 16, 2019 (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

As soon as I walked in today I knew it was going to be better. Everyone from the

company got there early to set up the large conference room for the applicants to come in and get

their paperwork reviewed. We got ourselves a table set up front and center so that we could pass

out of flyers, interact with those that are coming in, and also, watch the process unfold to really

see what goes on with the company. Firstly, the provided donuts for all the workers which made

my morning a lot better. But, we had many people come up to our table and talk with us about

our flyers. The hope is, that people will take the flyers and read them just to maybe get some

basic facts about receiving the flu shot or prevention of high blood pressure. Every step counts

when it comes to the community and prevention methods are key. We sat in the room and

watched till about lunchtime. (The company also provided lunch today which was very sweet).

After lunch, we were able to actually sit down with Nancy and talk to her about everything that

goes on in the company. To be able to get a larger, in depth knowledge about the programs that

go on here, really helped to get all of our minds rolling. Firstly, she got in contact with the head

of the senior activity center to ask what days we are all able to get out and interact. Our first days

will be next Tuesday and Wednesday. So, this will give us something to do tomorrow, to

beginning planning out activities. Secondly, we got to learn a lot more about to feeding service

they provide. It is slightly like 3meals on wheels’ program that allows homebound seniors in the

community to receive hot or frozen meals throughout the week. So, we are going to be able next

week to follow the route that is gone on to deliver food. After this conversation, it made me feel

much better about the situation at hand. There were doubts at first because I felt like I was not
being able to show my full potential, so the hope is that after today, we will be able to get the ball

rolling on things we want to perform here.

January 17, 2019 (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

For our internship at Overview, we did have to get another background check completed.

After filling out some paperwork, we went to the UPS store to get our fingerprints done. This

took about thirty minutes or so. When we returned to the office, there were still people coming in

to complete their paper word to hopefully get approved for the energy assistance program. The

main goal for today though was for us to figure out some activities to do with the elders at the

senior center on Tuesday and Wednesday. We came up with a few different ideas and composed a

word search, because apparently they really enjoy mind puzzles. The main struggle is trying to

plan out activities that tie in with public health and are not just lectures. We were thinking about

bring some sort of weekly healthy recipe that are easy to make. Also, we thought it would be fun

to do some sort of prom/dance at the end of our time there as a sort of final activity. We would

have to tie in some health related ideas, but apparently they have done this before and it has been

a large hit. Mainly, this week was slow. I think it will take a week or two for us and the directors

to figure out what to really do with us. But, after sitting down and talking with everyone, it

seems that they do a lot and are willing for us to be involved in whatever they have going on.

January 21, 2019 (12:00 – 6:00)

Overview was closed today for the holiday, but Mike, Ansley, and I decided to meet up

for a few hours in order to maintain our hours. Since Overview is closed on Fridays, they have
given us permission to meet outside of normal office hours in order to achieve the full 480 hours

by the deadline. Wednesday, we are going to be going to the Senior Activities Center for the first

time. Overview provided grant money for the maintaining of the building, along with funding to

allow transportation for those who qualify to go (this is based off of income – those who fall

below a certain income level can be provided funding help from Overview in order to attend the

daily activities and lunch). We have decided that since it is our first time going to meet with the

people, that we don’t want to come in with an immediate lecture. So, we thought that a cook

book with easy/healthy recipes geared toward elder adults would be a nice little something to

give them. Our book was not sure long, with about six recipes included. But, towards the end we

provided a word search on nutrition and also a lay out of the “MyPlate” diagram. Tomorrow

when we return to the office, we plan to run by some ideas about future projects that we have

had, along with seeing if there are any dates or projects that they would like for us to partake in.

January 22, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today we have finished our recipe book to take to the Senior Center tomorrow. The

recipes have included things that are good for aging adults. As people age, the diet seems to

deteriorate slightly, which hopefully with some fun and lively recipes, they will be excited to

cook. Also, Overview does this program called the Energy Assistance Program. This is a

program that is grant funded and allows those who qualify to get assistance to help pay for

heating during the winter months. The state of Georgia heard about this program and decided to

pitch in and help by providing over 3,200 wool blankets to Overview. These blankets will be

given out to those who are part of the assistance program in order to help keep them warm during

the cold months. Well, yesterday, all of these blankets came in. We had over one hundred twenty-
seven boxes delivered in an eighteen wheeler to the office. I was able to help unload these boxes

and find a home with them until the blankets are ready to be given out. Lastly, we sat down with

the woman, Nancy, who is involved with our internship here. She has told us that we will be

partaking in a health fair that will be held here in March. This health fair will give us a good

opportunity to use as one of our projects. We have decided that our topic will be based on

Nutrition, since we will just be setting up a booth. We have been searching for ideas and different

experiments to perform. Also, in April, we will be setting up a booth at the ArtHealthy Festival

that happens on front campus. So, we do have events that we need to start planning for. The

company is beyond happy to get us involved in anyway that we want to and if we here anything,

they would love for us to go support Overview. I am hopefully that as time goes by, we will have

more to do through out the days though.

January 23, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today at around nine thirty, us three met up at the Senior Activities Center. This allowed

us a few minutes before we were supposed to go in at ten to discuss what we were going to

speak. The main goal of today is to see the center, meet the people, and figure out if there are any

activities that they want for us to do with them. At first, it was slightly never racking because we

walked in to them playing Bingo and wasn’t sure who to speak to. But, after we found the

coordinator, Sabrina, she allowed us to introduce who we all were and to go around the room and

ask who the people attending were and how many children they have. It was wild to see that

majority of those who were there have 3+ more children. One lady said that she even has 9

children. The atmosphere seemed to be welcoming though and everyone was very excited about

our recipe book and we got great feedback. After we had passed around the recipes and discussed
them a little bit, we were able to go around the room and personally talk with the people that

were there. The ladies were a hoot and had some hilarious stories to tell. I made sure to ask if

there was anything that they would like for us to do for/with them while we are going to be there

this semester. One lady’s reply though made me realize that they just want people there to break

the routine. She said that the main thing they want is for us to just come and hangout and do

activities with them. When we left, the first thing that was asked was when we were coming

back. Many of these people did not have family living with them. They come to the senior center

to leave their homes and socialize during the day. But still, like what the woman who heads the

center at Overview said, they get so routine. It seems to be the same things every week.

Breakfast, bingo, arts & crafts, walking, and a computer class once a time. The activities do

change daily, but they are still doing the same things every week. For us to come in and help to

liven them up by talking about them or talking about ourselves may just help these people to take

advice from us and listen. I am beyond excited to go back and we plan to discuss arthritis with

them next week. We will be working on a flyer for living with arthritis to give them next time.

January 24, 2019 (9:00 – 5:00)

Today we finished up the flyer for the senior activity center. We did not want to make

something that was lecture based, since majority of the people who attend already have arthritis.

But instead, we wanted to do a more informational flyer that talked about the different ways to

live with arthritis. We put information about different foods to help with pain related to arthritis

and also included tips on how to exercise when you live with arthritis. Moving the joints will

help the pain in the long run so we want to inform them that there are ways to help. Also, last

week when we sat through the energy assistant program sign up, there was a woman that came
by and spoke with us. She helps with this festival called “Art in SpARTa”. She complimented

our flyers we had made to handout to people and was wondering if we could help her construct

some postcards and a poster for the festival. So today once we had a little down time, we were

able to make her a poster, flyers, postcards, and business cards to be able to handout for the

festival. The nice thing about Overview is being able to get contacts in the community because

they do work with so many different people. Next Monday we will be returning to the Senior

Activities Center, so today was mainly preparing for that.

Journal #3

January 28, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today, we returned back to the senior activities center. Majority of the people that we had

met last week were back, but it was not as crowded. Apparently when the weather gets cold, it

deters people from showing up. We brought in some information for them in regards to arthritis

and how the pain can be eased. Also, there was some information geared towards seniors being

active while having arthritis. We have brought them a word search each time because they all

really enjoy these. Apparently everyone there has a book that they use for word searches and

whenever they finish the first one, they bring it back in order to receive another one. When we

arrived, they were waiting on us to play bingo with them. Mike lead the bingo and we played

until everyone had won once. We only spend about an hour out there because this is the time

frame that was given to us. We are working on possibly getting more time to spend out there,

because an hour flies by. When we returned to Overview, we decided that we needed to sit down
with our site advisor and start to narrow down things that we could do for our large project. This

will give us something to do during the day, but we also wanted to plan something that we can

leave with the company. After listing out a few ideas, Nancy, our internship coordinator,

remembered that Overview does community needs assessments. The last one they had done was

in 2016 and this was the year they were going to pay someone to redo it for them. So, after

talking with her and Wanda (the head of Overview) we decided that we would update the needs

assessment for them.

January 29, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today, we began to break down the old needs assessment and figure out what needs to be

updated. The needs assessment is one hundred pages long and consist of data from seven

counties, Baldwin, Hancock, Johnson, Jasper, Putnam, Wilkinson and Washington. The data that

is being looked at varies from different population data, socioeconomic data, and health

disparities. We will also be gathering data from different participants in Overviews programs by

constructing and administering a survey. The survey is about forty questions long and will

consist of different questions regarding the person and their family. We also have to have

community informants provide us with information to different questions, so we will be hosting

a sort of meeting with the four people that we decide to pick and will be asking the questions

regarding the state of the community and what they think we could do to change things like

poverty and poor housing situations. We began today to look at some of the data and slowly start

updating it. Most of the categories are very specific so finding the proper data off the census

bureau was very difficult. Also, we began to call officials from different counties to see if they

would be interested in coming to the meeting we will be hosting in February to receive

information about the state of their county. So far, we have not gotten many replies or people are

unable to come, so we may have to change the date that was given to us. Everything is still in

planning right now but it felt good to actually have something to do. For the past few weeks, it

felt like we were doing a lot of busy work, so working on this project is allowing us to showcase

what we have studied over the past few years, but also know we are giving back to Overview.

January 30, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today we spent a lot of time working on the needs assessment. The more we get into it,

the more we realize that it is a lot of work. Finding data that is recent and reliable is hard. Also,

the census bureau website is very complicated to navigate. We are having to go into the website

and do advanced searches in order to attempt to find the data. After a while, it gets frustrating

because we are spending like three hours each on one chart of the document. The hardest part

was finding specific information breakdown on things regarding different age groups. Also, there

was a lot of struggle finding the different healthcare providers in each county that is a Medicare/

Medicaid provider. I did get a few sections done though in regards to the different race

demographics in each county. It is interesting the information that you do find out about the

different counties because there seem to be stereotypes about the counties. Many people think

that Baldwin county is predominately black, but there are actually more white people that live

here by about 3,000 people. I am very excited to dive more into the project, because it does

provide valid information at an easy medium, especially for Overview who works with these

counties, will hopefully be able to use this assessment.

February 1, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today was another day of working on the needs assessment. I was working

predominately on the poverty rates of each county. The way that the assessment works, is it does

one chart that has numbers, but then there will be another chart that deals with the percentages.

Only thing though, is that some of the numbers from websites will not have percentages, so I did

have to do some math today. But, Wanda, the head of Overview, gave us this website that she is a

member of called CARES Engagement Network. This website has all of their information from

the census bureau, but it is all in one place and is so much easier to navigate. The poverty

sections though break down in to children. The website only had information regarding children

aged 0 – 18. But, what the needs assessment includes is a break down by aged group (so like, 0 –

4, 5 – 13, etc.) I spent almost the whole day trying to find this information and have still failed to

find it. Going on the census bureau website, they did have some breakdowns, but it was majority

by different household types. So like, single family households by gender or combined

households. This was not the information that I was looking for, so it left me at a standstill. I had

to move on to the breakdown of poverty by gender, which was easier to find. The surrounding

counties are pretty poor, especially when compared to the average rates in Georgia. The hope is

that next week; I will be able to figure out the missed information. I just need to figure out the

right wording to hopefully get the proper breakdown.

Journal #4
February 4th, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Overview had fallen into some more grant money to allow more people to apply for the

Energy Assistance Program. So, today, tomorrow, and Wednesday the company will be having

people come in from around the county to do their applications. This has given us a perfect

opportunity to pass out surveys that we have composed for our Needs Assessment. The surveys

consist of fifty question which are geared towards to person and issues that they think are

prominent in the community. There are also personal questions about their living situations and

what they think could be done in order to receive better help. It is important for us to get replies

on the survey so that we can get an adequate picture of what each county is facing and the issues

that those who actually live there feel they are facing. Along with this, Overview also received

around 3,200 blanket kits (these include a wool blanket, weather stripping, and some tips on how

to lower your thermostat in order to save funds). Those who apply for the energy program are

receiving a blanket kit for their homes. We are in charge of passing out the blankets but also

getting people to fill out a survey in regards to the blankets. The survey consists of five questions

that ask simple yes or no questions. Examples are things like: will you use the contents in this

kit? Do you think that using this kit will motivate you to turn down your thermostat at night?

ETC. We had over one hundred people in today from eight o’clock to four o’clock. But, being

able to interact and speak with some of the Baldwin population that us college kids don’t see

much was eye opening. There are many residents here who are very poor. Also, it came to my

attention that a good bit of the older generation has issues reading. There were multiple people
that we had to read the survey to and check off the answers for them. Tomorrow there will be

more people that come through and it will be exciting to speak to more and interact.

February 5th, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today, we are going to be doing basically the same thing as yesterday. There are 100

more people coming by today to fill out applications from the same time frame as before. But,

what we had figured out from yesterday is that we did not get many surveys filled out. The one

that was for the blankets was great, because for them to receive a blanket, they had to answer the

few questions. So there was an incentive. But, with the survey we were given to handout, there

was no incentive and it was also incredibly lengthy. I brought this to the attention of one of the

workers here. With some of the population in a hurry to get back to work after their appointment

or not even being able to fully comprehend what is being asked, why would they do it. Also,

walking up to people and asking them to do it did not work great also. So, today we decided to

try something new. Inside the waiting room we have a sign in table. We placed a note next to the

sign in station that stated if they wanted to, to take and fill out a survey while they wait for their

appointment. This way there was no hassle with us feeling like we were half forcing people to

take the survey, but they now could pick it up on their own time. This idea seemed to work much

better, because upon sign in, people would just see the survey and pick one up. This also seemed

to lead to a sort of trending effect. I think people would see others working on the survey and

they would want to do it also. The population for the day was mainly like yesterday. But, we did

start imputing data into the system from the surveys and it shows that many people had great

insights about the community or just did not finish the survey at all. One question that stood out

in particular was “If you could pick any job, what would you do?” The answers were all so
optimistic and it made me slightly sad. So many of the low income community just have not had

the opportunity to do what they have wanted in life. People had answers like photographer,

teacher, and nurse. Majority of the answers required a higher education and it is just not possible

without certain means. Being able to really dig into the community and see the issues that are

overlooked a lot has been important. There is such a stigma placed on low income, but being able

to mingle and speak with the people applying, showed that majority of these stigmas are not true.

February 6th, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

Today is the last day of the applications for the Energy Assistance Program. We are doing

along the same lines that we have been doing for the past two days. There is more hope now for

more people to answer questions on the surveys, because we did have a good result yesterday. It

has been difficult because we need answers from these, but you can’t force people to answer

them. I spoke with my dad and he mentioned some sort of incentive for people to answer the

questions. Like, the blankets were an incentive to fill out the short five question survey. But, we

didn’t have much time to figure this out, so we may have to rethink before we start going to other

counties and attempting to get responses. Mike and I was handing out the blankets and Ansley

was sitting in the front office to answer questions and scan any paper work. She said that she

spoke with a lady that says she has five kids and no job. Apparently she gets around fifteen

dollars a week in order to feed her family. Just something about this made my stomach turn.

What on earth is being fed and bought through out the week in order to make ends meet? This is

why so many who are considered impoverished have poor health outcomes or suffer with some

form of obesity or overweight. When you have barely enough money to feed the family through

out the week, you are buying mainly calorie dense foods so that people are not hungry. The
system seems to be messed up. I am not saying that everyone who is considered in poverty have

a reason for not working, but I think it is seen that after they get a job, they will lose all the

support they receive from the government. Getting paid minimum wage is not going to support a

family, so what is there to do?

February 7th, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00)

There is finally quiet and calm at the office again. The space at Overview is not huge, so

having over one hundred people come in and out through out the day gets slightly stressful and

tiring. We were able to continue working on the needs assessment today. I have learned that over

the past week, searching for results has become easier. At first, it was super frustrating because

the things that I was attempting to look for were not popping out on the first search result. So on

a chart that should maybe take thirty minutes to update, it was taking almost three hours because

I couldn’t find the proper results. I have also started just picking apart the easy to find ones and

getting those knocked out, then looking for the difficult ones later down the line. There are many

graphs and line charts that we have to update. I am having to go back and reteach myself how to

use excel. I tried for a little bit yesterday but really need to do some research. After imputing all

the data from the chart into excel, it was not putting out a chart that was in accuracy with the

data. This did demotivate me some and honestly just made me stop on the graphs for a while. It

looks like whoever did the needs assessment before us just took the charts off of this website

called CARES Engagement Network. But, half the graphs aren’t on there, so we have to figure

out how to update those. Hoping that next week brings along more progress. We are also helping

out the Community Partners from Georgia College who are working with Overview to plan a
health fair. We are going to be meeting with them either this weekend or sometime next week.

More information to come.

TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: Approximately 32 hours

Journal #5

February 11, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 hours)

Today was a sort of catch up day on the needs assessment. Since we had so much going

on here last week with the Energy Assistance Program, there was not much time to work on

things. We have broken down the needs assessment into an order. First, we are going through and

updating all of the data charts. There are almost two of these on each page, so its a lot of

information. After these are completed, there are descriptions for about half of the data charts, so

these need to be updated and possibly extended. Lastly, we will be updating the graphs and

number charts. These are going to take the longest since we have to go in and manually plug in

data. Like I said last week, excel is not my strong suit so I have begun to look at different sites to

figure out how to use excel properly. We have also been planning and trying to contact

community members who would be willing to answer some questions for us about the

community and what they think some major issues are, plus how these can be solved. Also, I

think this has been very generally mentioned, we are going to be involved in a health fair held

here at Overview in March. Apparently, there are some community partners from Georgia

College who got involved with Overview and the project that they want to plan is a health fair

geared towards the elderly. We are going to put a booth in the fair that is talking about nutrition

for senior citizens. So, we have been trying to find things like health recipes, daily calorie and
nutrition intake, etc. The hope is that we will be able to spread nutrition information and

awareness to those who may not have much of an idea on the topic. I am excited for the

opportunity, especially being able to interact with more people in the community. Also, we had a

last minute visit to the senior activities center and spent time doing coloring with them.

February 12, 2019 (8:00 to 6:00) (10 hours)

Today was an incredibly long but productive day for me. I got to go with some of the

ladies who work on the Energy Assistance Program to Madison Georgia to watch them do

applications there. I was in charge of passing out the blanket kits once people who completed

their application. It was exciting to be in a different place and to get a glimpse of a different

community. We had over one hundred people come through today. It got stressful and

unorganized at times, due to when we are at Overview, we have someone other than the ladies

doing the applications being in charge of getting people checked in. This process seemed to put

us very behind and we literally had to eat lunch within fifteen minutes basically because there

were still like 14 people in the room. It was fascinating though to see how people interact and

that majority of those who came in knew at least two or three people there. It seemed to be a very

community oriented town, but it is sad because all of these people know each other from low

income areas. I had one girl who was around twenty five come up to me to receive her blanket

and she told me she couldn't read. She also was so thankful for the blanket kit and told me that

she used to put a towel in the microwave to stay warm. This is why public health is so rewarding.

I was literally there handing out free blanket kits, but knowing how much these kits are going to

help people just makes the long day worth it. We were there till almost 4:45. There were still

3:30 appointments coming in after four. I did enjoying going out today and it was nice to get to
interact with some of the workers that I am not super familiar with. Everyone seems like a big

family and take care of each other. We had a girl come in for her appointment about four hours

late. If you are late, they will no longer take you, due to the large amount of people we have

coming through for appointments. This girl began yelling and screaming because one of the

ladies said she could no longer do her application. She wound up getting her application done

once she calmed down, but it goes to show that throwing a fit and yelling at the people who are

trying to help YOU, will not get you very far.

February 13, 2019 (8:00 to 6:00) (9 hours)

Today, we went out to Monticello to do the Energy Assistance Program. Being able to

travel the past two days has made me feel more like we have a purpose there. It has also been

nice to see the surrounding areas that I did not know much about. Monticello went much

smoother than Madison. It seems that there were less people coming through, but I also think the

area is smaller. The church that we did the event at had a better set up space for us. Ansley, Mike

and I had a table right at the door when people came in. We directed them to where they needed

to go, but we also handed out our needs assessment survey. We had many people willing to take

the survey and got the most replies I think we have gotten over all. This could be due to people

knowing they would have to wait and that it gave them something to do. Majority of the people

were very kind and were thankful for the help that we were providing. I did not witness anyone

giving the company trouble, but we also sat further away. There was one lady that did catch my

eye. She came in for a three o'clock appointment and was in a wheel chair. She came up to speak

to us about how far behind we were on the appointments. We were about fifteen minutes behind

so we told her it shouldn't be too long. Apparently she had a doctors appointment because she
had an infection in her leg and needed to get to the hospital before her doctors office closed at

five. But, she couldn't leave because her power had been cut off and she needed the assistance. It

was incredibly eye opening to see that people of lower income have to make crazy sacrifices like

this. As she was leaving, she was talking to us about how they may have to amputate her leg, but

she has a nine year old at home so this was more important. The people that we have seen and

met the past two days have been very insightful about the way that people live and the help that

they need. It just showed me how much more needs to be done in the world and where the focus

needs to be turned. There are so many people who are disabled and cant work, which is not their

problem. But, they are not getting enough money to support themselves or their families. Which

it then comes down to a repetitive cycle where this lifestyle will more than likely be passed down

to their children. It comes to a point where you have to think where you stop the trend. Which is

why I think public health is so powerful, because it could just take knowing that someone is there

trying to help to get people motivated.

February 14, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 hours)

Today, we spent majority of our time catching up on the needs assessment. We were gone

all during the day the past two days and the locations we were stationed at had no wifi. I have

this hope that we will be able to finish the needs assessment early so that we could maybe

complete another project - like a health resource guide for the low income that overview could be

able to pass out for those who apply for their energy assistance program. After working these

past two days with the population who does apply, I have learned that the education level is not

the greatest. It could be nice for them to have some additional resources when it comes to health

and nutrition. The needs assessment has been coming along very well. We have almost
completed our statistic charts so the next part will be to update the graphs. The only real thing

that has been holding us back has been getting replies on the community surveys. We are aiming

to have at least two hundred responses so we can get a good variety of populations and answers.

We surprisingly got a bunch of replies yesterday in Monticello which helps us out a lot. We do

need to get some more from Baldwin, so the hope is that when we do the health fair, we can get

some replies from people. I am excited for our projects to start coming together. At first, I was

not the biggest fan of Overview. The communication was not good among the office and we felt

pretty useless. But, the people who work there have started to know us better and connections

have started to be made. This has helped us not feel as awkward during the day and also being

invited to do more. Each day is a day to grow and I have started to like it there more. I just want

for this to be a rewarding experience, so I am trying my best to do all I can to make it that.

February 17th, 2019 (1:00 to 4:00) (3 hours)

Overview is closed tomorrow due to the Presidents Day Holiday. So in order for us to

keep our hours on point, we decided to work some today and also a little bit tomorrow. We are

determined to finish this needs assessment at a decent time, so we put in some work on that

today. The hope is that tomorrow we can work more on the health fair aspect, since that will be a

month away. I definitely want to be able to have hand outs and different educational activities.

Also, the MyPlate website has different things you can pass out (like pens, etc.) so it may benefit

us to explain to them we are working for a nonprofit organization and see if they could send us

anything. I did start to go through today and update some of the written parts on the needs

assessment. All of them needed to have updated statistics and also some of the wording just

wasn't that good. I want to be able to make these a little bit more educational instead of just a
writing of what is said in the charts. This is the visual part that people can see, but I want to use

the opportunity to include some more public health related information for each section. I need to

look into if its okay on a needs assessment to maybe add in a section about prevention or how to

be applicable (for things like SNAP, Medicare, free or reduced lunch). This is our mark that we

are leaving for Overview and I want to do all that we can for the company in order to feel good

about the time that we spent there.

Journal #6

February 18, 2019 (11:00 to 5:00) (6 hours)

Today we met up on our own because the office was closed for President’s Day. We have

the health fair coming up in a few months and needed to be able to beginning planning more for

it. We looked into the MyPlate website to see if they offer any sort of handouts or goodies that

could be give out (like pens, etc.). But sadly they do not offer this anymore. We have been trying

to think of things that could be given out at our booth to encourage people to come over. The two

ideas that we have come up with have been to show the sugar content in different drinks and to

also compare popular fast food items. There is a big misconception in fast food restaurants that

salads are the “healthier option”. But, if you look at the calorie content, a cheeseburger from

McDonalds actually has far less calories than one of their salads. A lot of this is due to the

toppings they place on top. The sugar idea is something that we saw online where you get the

amount of sugar that is in different types of beverages and put them in a bag on a poster board.

This way, people will be able to see the sugar intake they are getting from something like a coke,

compared to water. These are important concepts that many people do not take into
consideration. I know that my grandma used to drink a lot of coke and sweet tea. Turns out,

when she went to the doctor a few months ago that she was prediabetic. After checking out her

diet and making some changes, she was able to drastically reduce her risk. I think if we can at

least broadcast some of this information to the elder population that it may be able to help out in

the long run, especially since a lot of the stuff we are planning is visual. Usually, when you see

things, it tends to embed greater into the mind.

Tuesday, February 19, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 hours)

Today was a slight catch up day since we missed Monday for working on the needs

assessment. Dr. K also came to visit our site and we explained to him the project that we are

doing. It sort of caused a lot of stress because he did make us feel like we were very behind. We

have had a lot of trouble trying to get people to commit to come to this Focus Group we are

hosting. He gave us a list of things that we need to complete. We needed to make a flyer that we

could send out via email as a sort of reminder for those who are committing to come. Also, he

said we needed to formulate a new list of people to invite since those we had called were not

coming or did not give an answer. He also emailed us a sort of lay out script that we can use in

order to lead our focus group. I think the reason we all got stressed out Is because this focus

group plays a large part in the needs assessment. We have also been trying really hard to reach

out to people. We have been looking at different people who are connected to Overview. But,

what Dr. K did mention, was to maybe start targeting people who run small businesses or other

non profits of sorts. We have been really looking to try to get sheriffs and commissioners to come

to the meeting. But, like Dr. K said, these people are incredibly busy and more than likely will

not devote time to come. We do have Mr. Tommy French who said he would come, so that is one
commissioner. After Dr. K left and through out the rest of the day, we worked more on the needs

assessment and also spent time composing a flyer and making a new list of people to contact

tomorrow. We are thankful that Dr. K did come by, because we were not having much direction

at the office, so this cleared up a lot of things for us.

Wednesday, February 20, 2019 (8:00 to 4:00) (8 hours) (no lunch break)

We have been informed that there is a community meeting being held at overview today

where they are bringing together some of their stakeholders and newer members that they have

not spoken with yet. The purpose of this meeting is to spread information in regards to the

programs they have going on – those being discussed today are the rapid rehousing program and

the weatherization/wheelchair ramps. These meetings are held once a month and are very

important because they are a way to get more information out to the members of the community.

The group that we had today were a lot of people who work at the churches. It seems that aside

from the grant money that Overview receives, that different churches in the community help out

a lot. The problem that Overview has been having lately with their rapid rehousing program is

that they have not been able to find landlords that will work with them. I think this is due to a

liability thing, because the people that they are trying to put up into the homes are recently

homeless. Also, part of the program is that when they do find people that are classified as

homeless (sleeping in a place that is not meant for human habitation – a car, tent, under a bridge,

etc.) that Overview will put them in a hotel for a few nights. But, what was mentioned in the

meeting is that it gets really expensive to put someone in a hotel for a week. So they were really

just asking for funds and also trying to get the people at the meeting to listen out if they know a

landlord that would be willing to help. Overview does pay for the first three months rent, with
the hope that in three months, these people will be self sustainable with some sort of income. I

am happy that we got to sit in on the meeting, because it also gave us an opportunity to introduce

ourselves and give out information at the focus group. We had two people that said they would

make it and that they would also pass the word around. Lastly, we got news today that Wanda

(the director) has contacted someone to come and help us find some of the missing facts on the

needs assessment. We have almost everything finished, but there is some information that we

have not been able to find. Also, they will be able to help show us how to properly input all the

data into excel and turn it in the graphs.

Thursday, February 21, 2019 (8:00 to 4:00) (7 hours)

Today, the ladies who work with the Energy Assistance Program are going out to Johnson

County. I was expecting to go with them, but when I got there, we got some other news.

Apparently, Wrightsville is not the nicest of areas. The way that they were going to have the

program set up today, was that I was going to be downstairs apart from everyone handing out

blankets. The original plan was that there was going to be two cops – one upstairs and one

downstairs to help me. But there was some miscommunication and the cop thought he was

supposed to meet at Overview instead of in Wrightsville. The women were very concerned for

me, because they say the people they were serving today are the type to take advantage of you

and are just not kind. So, I wound up not going because they felt uncomfortable placing me

along downstairs. Hopefully though, the next registration, we will be able to attend. These are

really nice to go to, because for one, it gets us out of the office, but, it has also been very nice to

see the different surrounding communities and who lives there. Especially when it comes to our

needs assessment and focus group, it has been nice to see the community and really take in the
types of people and the potential needs that may be had. The only thing that I have found hard to

balance with the internship is having a job. I do have to work today which means I have to leave

an hour early. My job has been understanding about not scheduling me during the week, but at

the same time it has really been affecting my money influx along with my social life, because I

then have to make up for not working during the week on the weekends. It has taught me a lot

about balance and time management. There are days where I am really tired, especially like

today, because I have to go to work from 5 to 10. It just makes the weeks seem really long. But

thankfully, Overview has been understanding also and are more than willing to let us work on the

weekends to make sure we are receiving our hours.

Journal #7

February 25, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 hours)

Today, Sandra Roberts showed up to help us with the Needs Assessment. She has helped

out Overview before and Wanda, the director, decided that we needed some help finding some of

the last information. There were about five charts that finding data for was just incredibly

difficult. Probably due to the fact that we have never completed a needs assessment before. But,

what we find out, is that majority of needs assessments now a days are gathering information

from this website called Cares Engagement Network, which is out of University of Missouri. The

website is great and seems to be what majority of the past needs assessment is composed out of.

For the most part, we have been able to update the charts easily off of this website (all the
information comes from the census bureau, but in an easier to read fashion). But, some of the

charts that were used are no longer on the website. A lot of these include – poverty breakdown by

age and race, Medicare providers, vacant houses and businesses, etc. So, Sandra has come down

to help us make phone calls to the proper establishments and to show us how to really navigate

the census bureau. I feel that she is going to be a great help for us and she has a great personality.

Today, we have been focusing a lot on different health care providers in the seven different

counties and also, I have been working on the different age and race breakdowns for aged 65

plus. These are difficult because they require you to go into the census bureau and pull out the

data. The complicated part, is that you eventually have to turn all of these into percentages so

tomorrow I will figure out how to properly do that. These rates are for those in poverty, so my

best bet will probably be to add up the entire population of those 65 plus and then divide the

number in poverty into that to get a proper percentage breakdown.

February 26, 2019 (8:00 to 2:00) (6 hours)

Today, I went home sick with a fever, but thankfully, with the needs assessment being

online, I was able to continue working for a little bit. The main goal for today and tomorrow is to

complete ALL of the data charts (not including the ones from the survey) so that we can finally

begin to update the graphs. Like I said yesterday, the ones that we have were easy to figure out,

but the ones that we do not have are the difficult ones that seem to be hidden in the depths of the

census bureau. So, after working more on the 65+ in poverty section, I think I have finally

figured out what I need to do. The most complicated part has been that the census bureau does

not break things down like it does on our needs assessment. So instead of 65+, they have a like

65-74 section and then a 75+ section. So, I have been having to add these two numbers up for the
poverty levels. Its not that it is a lot of work, it is just really tedious and you have to constantly

go back and double check. We did find out that the people who had made the needs assessment

last, got most of their information from this website called Community Commons. But, a few of

the charts that we have, we could not find the information for them off that website. So after

being in contact with them, we found out that they had deleted a bunch of their charts. With the

main ones being the age breakdowns in poverty. Honestly, after completing this, I realize why. It

is a ton of work and honestly took me forever to complete. You have to go in and add up all the

65+ in poverty. Then, add up the 65+ not in poverty and add it with those in poverty. Then,

divide by the number in poverty and convert to a percentage. After doing this for seven counties

and the state of Georgia and the United States, it comes out to be a lot of numbers.

February 27, 2018 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 hours)

Today, Overview is doing more of their Energy Assistance Program applications, so they

are providing lunch for us. We will be staying and working through lunch because there are still

charts to be updated and we want to have these done by tomorrow. I think going in to this

project, we did not realize how much work it would be. I think we have learned a lot though and

I will say that I can navigate the census bureau like a champ now though. After completing the

65+ poverty group yesterday, I have moved on to the 5-17 in poverty (Hispanic and Non

Hispanic) group today. From looking at this, I already know it is going to be a lot of work. When

I say this took almost 6 hours to complete, I mean it. First, I had to figure out how to get the

numbers from the 2014 statistics that were used on the last needs assessment. It took me a really

long time to get the same numbers that they did. But, finding the Hispanic Rates were easy,

because it was basically the same thing that I did for the 65+. Once again though, they
breakdown the ages in smaller increments in the census bureau. So, I had to go through and add

up the ages for poverty then add those to the ages not in poverty and divide by the in poverty

number. When it came to those non Hispanic though, I first had to find out what was meant by

non Hispanic. And that basically comes out to every race that is not Hispanic. So white, black,

mixed, Asian, etc. Thankfully, the census bureau did have stats all in one place for this category.

But, it took me a long time to realize why I was not getting the same numbers as the 2014

assessment. Finally, I realized that you have to subtract the Hispanic in poverty numbers from

the all others number. I was starting to get somewhere but realized I had to do this for both the in

poverty numbers and the not in poverty numbers and THEN add these and divide by those

numbers to get my percentage. It was just a lot of work and I kept having to go back and check

numbers to make sure I was doing everything right. Once I finished though, it was like a weight

was lifted off my shoulders. Ansley was having a little trouble today doing the aged 0-4 in

poverty (Hispanic and non Hispanic) and all the work I did today was hard to explain so I will be

working on that one tomorrow.

February 28, 2019 (8:00 – 4:30) (7.5 hours)

For work, I am having to close every Thursday night. This has been the main challenge

with the internship because I do have to keep my job. So, I have to leave the internship a little

early in order to go home and get dressed for work. Today, I will be doing basically what I did

yesterday but for the aged 0-4 age group. To spare you all the details again, it was the same thing

as yesterday just with different ages. So, after doing this, we began to really break down the

needs assessment and realized that some of the graphs did not have charts to go with them. My

job was to go through and make a list of these charts and add them in. There were at least five
charts that needed to be added so that the graphs could add up. I only got to add two in today and

will be working more this weekend. We needed the gender breakdown for each county, the race

demographics for each county, and the ethnicity demographics by gender for each county. There

were a few more, but those were the ones that I got around to today. Lastly, Mike and Sandra

have begun to make up some of the graphs on excel while Ansley and I finish up some of the

finishing touches on the charts. We are finally starting to get close to completion with this thing

and it is super exciting. There still is the very last few pages that come from our survey we have

been passing out and also information from the focus group. These will be the last steps. After

Tuesday, which is when we are doing the focus group, we will be able to get the information

transcribed and put in to the needs assessment by information needed.

February 29, 2018 (11:00 to 3:00) (4 hours)

Today, I spent some time adding in some of the final charts, but majority of my time was

done on making the assessment look nice. The old one had weird font that made the numbers all

curly, but also, not all the charts match up in looks. So, there were many that I literally had to

copy into a different word document and delete from the google doc, just so I could make a new

chart in the document that looks like the ones that I have been doing in order for things to look

consistent. It is not that it was a lot of work, it was just really time consuming because I want for

everything to look good on the assessment and there is also a lot of charts that needed to be

fixed. This is our update on the needs assessment so I want for it to look like we actually did

something with it instead of just copying and pasting information into the old one.

Journal #8

March 4, 2019 (8:00 – 2:00) (6 Hours (Worked Through Lunch))

Today at Overview, we still worked on the needs assessment. The woman that was hired

to come in and help us has only two days left here, so we have been trying our best to use her as

much as we can. The two things that have been giving us trouble is the HUD housing. They have

the information that we need for the vacancy rates along with the business address and vacant

businesses. We signed up for their information but it has been a whole process because

apparently the US Postal Service makes it difficult now for that information to be passed out.

After we finally got accepted for it, everything needs to be pulled up on SPSS, so we will have to

go the library at some point so we can get the information. Lastly, we have been searching for

information on healthcare providers in the area (two separate categories – number of providers

but also number of Medicare/Medicaid acceptance providers). We have been on the phone with

different hospitals trying to figure out the numbers of hospitals in Georgia and in the United

States. Hopefully after leaving messages, we will get some answers today or tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also our focus group. It will begin promptly at 6:30 and we are providing food and

beverage. As of now, we have a tentative list of 20 people to show up. It has also been told to us

that Sandra, the woman who has been helping us, has a good friend of hers who is a moderator. It

turns out that Overview is allowing her to moderate our focus group in order to help us lead

things so that we can sit back and listen and take notes while being involved. Also, with us never

having done anything like this before, and there being three of us, moderating would have been
very difficult. I think it will be good for us to sit in and be able to watch how to do lead the group

for future references. I did have to leave early today for work.

March 5, 2019 (8:00 – 9:00) (12 Hours)

Today is the day of the focus group so we have a lot to get prepared for. Sandra is still

here helping us with the needs assessment but it is her last day, so we are trying to get as much

help from her as we can. Honestly, we are beginning to finish up mostly everything. She taught

us how to make the graphs in excel and everything is starting to look really good. The focus

group will start tonight at 6:30, so we are just going to stay after Overview closes to get

everything set up. We have approximately 19 people who have said they’re coming. We are

going to set up in the room in a “U” shape so that everyone can face each other but also see us at

the front. Around 5:45 we began to get the food set up. Overview had subway sandwiches and

wraps catered. Our first guest showed up at 6:00 and it was a lady from the boys and girls club.

After she showed up, more people began to trickle in. We had fourteen people show up from our

surrounding counties. The conversation went so smoothly with us learning so much about the

needs of the different counties. Also, us and Overview had formed our own list of needs that we

think are prominent in the counties. After we had heard from people around the room about what

was going on in the counties, we listed off our needs that we though were there and had everyone

raise their hands to see if they agreed and made a list of the numbers. The needs that seemed to

be top were transportation, help for single mothers, and needs for children. Transportation

seemed to deal a lot with people not being able to keep jobs or even get jobs due to not being

able to get there. Secondly, jobs seemed to revolve a lot around childcare. Because many people

who do shift jobs seemed to be single mothers, they don’t have people to watch over their
children on things like night shifts or weekend. I will compose a large list of all the things once

we get our transcription back. Overall, the focus group was very successful and the turn out was

great. It was a little nerve racking because of all the people who were there had a place in the

community. It was interesting because us at the college don’t get much contact with those who

don’t go to school there. So us being able to listen to what’s actually going on where we go to

school was really neat. I am excited to get back everything and really write out and dissect

everything that was said. I think this is a very crucial part of our needs assessment that has been a

relief to be finished.

March 6, 2018 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 hours)

Our health fair is tomorrow so we are starting to put together our poster boards. We have

decided that we are going to do the sugar idea. We went out and bought some sugar drinks – like

Fanta, cranberry juice, lemonade, Gatorade. We have measured out the sugar in grams and place

it in a bag above the drinks to show how much is in each. I think giving a visual representation

will show a lot for people and help them to reconsidered some of their drink options. Fanta

obviously had the most sugar and it honestly shocked us just to see how much sugar fits into one

tiny bottle of soda. We have also decided to do a healthy snack board, where we found a bunch

of easy, healthy, 100 calorie snacks. While we were making it, there were multiple people at

Overview who said they needed a copy of the list. I think it will really show people that there are

options that you can eat that are healthy. Many people snack throughout the day and this adds up

to a bunch of calories if you’re not snacking properly. We also made a bunch of handouts

previously on things like high blood pressure and obesity that we plan to have laying out. We did

a lot today on composing all of our information for tomorrow and also making sure the room is
clean. The girls who are hosting the health fair for their community partnership will be here

tomorrow around 11:15 to start setting up. They have about eight people who are coming

tomorrow to partake in the health fair. The hope is that we will get people from the senior center

to come out and support us. It is difficult to advertise to the older community in Milledgeville.

Overview posted it on Facebook and also had the Milledgeville Commerce post something on

their Facebook. I am excited for tomorrow but also ready for it to be over. There has been a lot

going on this week and we are all getting a little tired. Especially on Tuesday, it was a really long

day. The hope is that we will have a good turn out tomorrow.

March 7, 2019 (8:00 – 4:30) (7.5 hours)

Today is the day of the health fair, so we have been trying really hard to get everything

together and make our posters look pretty. At about 11:15, the other girls showed up and we

began to move tables around. The fair will begin at 2:00 and there are people coming from the

nursing school, different counseling offices, and people from the writing center. The girls have

done a good job at getting people from the community to come out and talk about their

organization while giving healthy tips. Like the people from the writing center are talking about

journaling and how its good for things like anxiety and the mind. The senior center is coming out

today for a little bit and they will be coming at two. Once they arrived, it became very clear that

they were not interested. Almost every table was handing out things like stress balls, journals,

etc. It seems that the people who came just wanted to walk around and get the free things. After

this, they just proceeded to sit and not partake in any other activities. This raised an interest to

me because you would think that the director of the center would be more of a motive to get

them to partake in things. It was honestly slightly upsetting because as seniors they need to be up
walking around and doing things. As soon as they came in, they immediately sat down and just

began to eat snacks. As a director of a senior center activities home, I would make it more active.

After they left, no one else really showed up which was disappointing. But, with the senior

center coming, we did have about twenty people come. Our booth seemed to do pretty well and

people were shocked about the drink choices. Also, many people did take our flyers and look at

the snack ideas. I think the problem is, it is difficult to get people to come out in Milledgeville. It

is hard to advertise things or get people to come. This was an issue I even saw with our

community health class. Its that people don’t seem to be as active in the community as in other

places.

Journal #9

Monday, March 11, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 hours)

After the busy week last week, we are trying to wrap up some of the final things on the

Needs Assessment. We are honestly almost finished minus the survey data we have been giving

out and then the HUD information. The housing information was very tedious for us to get.

Apparently HUD doesn’t give out this data easily and we had to get our supervisor to sign some

forms and talk with the man in charge of sharing the information. He just kept talking about how

USPS would not be happy if the information fell into the wrong hands. Not entirely sure about

what this means. The data all comes in really large excel files since there is information for every

county in the United States. But, there is no writing on these files, only numbers. Apparently,
every county has a specific geoid. It took us a long time to even half figure out what these

numbers meant. Because all of the information online was confusing and not helpful. Also, after

asking some of the higher ups here at Overview, they did not know what a geoid was either.

Tomorrow, we will be breaking this down more and hopefully narrowing down the chart more.

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 (8:00 – 4:00) (7 hours)

Today, before heading back to the library, we looked more into the geoid. We finally got

somewhere on what these number combinations could be. It turns out that the first number or

two is the state code. So Georgia is 13. From there, every county we have in Georgia has a

different code. These numbers range drastically, but Overview did have the county codes for

those that we needed. For example, Baldwin is along the lines of “13” for the state code, then

“009” for their county code. You add these together and it looks like “13009”. So we knew that

all of these were from Baldwin. But, within Baldwin, there are like 5 different zip codes. Which I

think is where the last few numbers in the code come from. But, we have not been able to figure

out those numbers yet. So, for every county we serve, we have had to go through the ridiculous

amount of numbers and highlight the codes that match. From here, we will be able to delete a lot

of the others to knock the list down a ton. This will make things easier for us to navigate.

Wednesday, March 13, 2019 (8:00 – 3:30) (6.5 hours)

I did have to work today and yesterday, so have had to leave a little bit earlier than usual.

The hope is to work a little bit on Friday to make up for some of the hours. We needed a break

from the excel sheet today and are honestly at a slight standstill until we can get our transcription

back from our focus group. Once this information gets back to us, we will be able to really

decipher the information more in-depth. It was hard to keep up and take good notes when it was
going on, because there was almost two hours of talking that went on. It’ll be nice to see things

in writing so that we will be able to find common themes and grounds that the different counties

were on. In the needs assessment, we have to include what we found to be the few most

important needs of the counties. Which we already know to be things like transportation,

childcare (especially for single mothers), jobs, etc. I do remember this information because it

was spoken a lot about, but the different “whys” will go very nicely into the needs assessment to

hopefully help out people in the future who work with Overview. Tomorrow, it is in our game

plan to finish up the HUD information and figure out how to calculate everything that the chart is

asking for. They do want percentages, so it will be complicated to figure out a formula on how to

properly get this number, but we will figure it out.

Thursday, March 14, 2019 (8:00 – 4:00) (8 hours)

Today, we have been working a lot on adding up these numbers and trying to convert

numbers into data sets. For each county, there are multiple zip codes and we have had to add

these numbers together to get the appropriate information for each county. We are hoping that

this is the right way to do it, because there really is no other way to calculate for the counties,

since they are broken down into zip codes. We have also been doing a little bit more “homey”

stuff on the needs assessment, by making all of the charts look the same, changing fonts, and

updating some of the writing. We really want to make this look good and consistent, it just has

taken a long time. I am not taking my spring break next week because I have to work at my other

job also, so I am going to try to find a sort of mini project that I can work on since Mike and

Ansley will be gone next week. I was thinking about maybe a resource guide of some sort. I will
be thinking more about this during the weekend to hopefully find something that will keep me

busy but will also be of use to Overview.

Friday, March 15, 2019 (12:00 to 3:30) (3.5 hours)

The plan for today has been to completely finish up the graphs and the charts on the

needs assessment and to go back and double check our information. Our transcription should be

back once everyone returns from Spring Break and then we will be able to focus predominately

on getting that information in, which also trying to gather more surveys for the ending of the

needs assessment. The end part is where we place all of our survey information into survey

monkey and it’ll produce graphs and charts for us to be able to see the different percentages from

the different counties. I am excited to be finishing up everything for the assessment because it

has been a difficult project. It has been very time consuming and frustrating at times when we

have not been able to find certain information. But, overall, I do feel it looks more put together

than the original one and that it’ll be more appealing for people to look at.

Journal #10

March 19, 2019 (8:00 – 3:00) (6 hours)

This weekend I went to Savannah for St. Patrick’s day. On Saturday, we ate at this

Chinese restaurant that probably should not have been eaten at and I got very sick. So I ended up

driving from Savannah to my family home in St. Simons to be taken care of by my parents. I was

still not feeling good on Sunday and my parents didn’t want me driving if I was still very
nauseous. I did not come on site Monday, but I did work some on a project that Nancy, Wanda

and I decided would be suitable for me, since Mike and Ansley are gone. Overview has

brochures about what they do and the services offered here. It does need to be updated though,

with newer photos and information. They want for me to update it while I am here this week, just

to make it look a little livelier and inviting. So today, I spent some time researching the best way

to do the brochure and it seems that the original one was made with adobe, so I looked into that

and have found that to probably be how I will create it also. With spring break being this week, I

am having to put in extra hours at Ruby Tuesdays so will have to be leaving a little earlier every

day in order to make it to work at 4. But, Friday, I do have some free time and will be able to

work more on the brochure and also gain some more hours to make up for the loss. Secondly, I

will be taking my week spring break the first week of April. I coordinated with Overview and

they said this is fine since I have stayed this week to work for them. The hope is to have

everything complete – the brochure, the needs assessment, and the write up from the focus group

– before I leave for my spring break.

March 20, 2019 (8:00 – 3:00) (6 hours)

Today I was in office, which was nice because I got to make sure that all the information

that needed to updated was correct and check if I needed anything else. The main task today was

the front of the brochure and trying to make sure it pops and looks nice. The one that we use now

has this neat tree and the leaves are made out of hands. Which I really want to keep that concept

to do a sort of “helping hands” type thing. This took a little bit to figure out if I should do a

whole spread out of the tree or just do one panel of the brochure the tree. So, after messing with

this a little bit, I think I am going to try to do the front side of the brochure with this helping
hands tree. Because, one panel of the brochure on the front page doesn’t have any information on

it. Which, there isn’t really much I could add to do a full page since the inside of the brochure

contains all of the services provided. I have never used an adobe product before so I was slightly

unsure of what I am doing. Eventually, I decided it would be easier for me to work on a desk top

and also, the computers in the library have all of these software’s already downloaded, so I

wouldn’t have to keep going through the virtual apps off of the unify website. So, after lunch, I

went to the library to pull everything up. I was able to accomplish almost the whole front of the

brochure which contains the hours, address, and contact information for Overview. I think it is

starting to look good, but still needs some work. The hope is that I will get more familiar with

using adobe and can navigate things better to make a very nice brochure for the company.

Tomorrow, I will start on the rough draft of the inside. There has been some new information that

they want for me to add in, because they did start a new program here that deals with rehousing

the homeless. I will need to write up a brief summary of the program in order to place in on the

brochure. Tomorrow, the plan is to get the lay out and wording complete for the inside of the

brochure.

March 21, 2019 (8:00 – 2:00) (6 hours)

So, instead of continuing to work on the brochure today, Nancy (my site supervisor) and I

are going out to go out to a few different counties, Wilkinson county and Johnson county, to pass

out information in regards to Overview, but also some homeless kits. The plan is to go to the

different sheriff’s offices and ask if they would be willing to take some of the bags we are

passing out and place hem into their troop cars. Inside these bags are different things like socks,

hygiene goods, and a few snacks/waters. The sheriff’s office in Sandersville were very exceptive
and said that they would love for us to bring out more for them to have. We then traveled to the

sheriffs department in Johnson county and it was a different vibe that was given. They were

willing to take the bags but said they would keep them in the back to “keep with the others”. This

was honestly disappointing because even if we do not have a large homeless population here in

middle Georgia, there are still people that do not have everyday necessities. We also told them

that they could give these kits out to people who had recently lost their home, etc. We also gave

out some large blankets and these were able to be given to anyone that needed them. I was very

excited to be able to get out of the office today and go out to see the different counties that

Overview serves. The more I have been here, I have learned that middle Georgia is a very poor

area. The homes, the development, and the landscape are not up to standards. There still seems to

be a lot of trailers and people living in areas that are not meant for permeant establishment. I

know that we will not be here much longer, but I do hope in the future that more effort will be

done to help those in need. Because, the longer I have been here, the more I have seen that it is

very needed. Tomorrow I plan to work on the brochure for a little bit to make up for what I have

missed today. There really is not much more that needs to be done instead for adding photos and

finishing up the little bit of writing that needs to be put into it. It has been a little difficult to

figure out how to make everything look good, because honestly, updating brochures is difficult.

There seems to be a loot and a color scheme that Overview really likes. Tomorrow, I will be

putting in around two to three hours into the brochure.

Journal #11

March 25th, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 hours)

Today I did the inside of the brochure, with adding in all the information for the services

offered at Overview. They want for me to add updated photos, but still have failed to send any

and also only have stock photos on their website. So, I am currently trying to get something

updated to add on to the inside to finish up the brochure. We also have finally received our

transcription which is allowing us to go through and look at the common themes seen in the

different counties. The hope is that we will find at least five issues that every county seems to

face. This will give us a good idea of what to pull of of. Just from remembering the conversation

from the focus group, there was a lot of talk about jobs, childcare, help for single parents, and

education. We sadly will not be able to do anything to help with these problems because our time

here is limited. But, with Overview trying to gather more connections and extend who they work

with, the needs assessment will be something they can look at to go off of. I really do hope that

this will be something rewarding that Overview can use when thinking of new programs or focus

areas. The transcription is really long, like 45 pages long. So it will take us a little bit to go in and

highlight in order to figure out what is being discussed. The hope is that tomorrow we can

answer the few questions that the needs assessment asks in regards to the focus group, because

this is really the final part of the assessment that we have to work on.
March 26th, 2019 (8:00 – 2:30) (5.5 hours)

The one nice thing about Overview is that they have been very kind about working with

our schedules outside of work. We have lost a lot of people at Ruby Tuesdays lately, so being

short staffed has meant that the rest of us have to put in more work. Last week, I did over 42

hours and have just been extremely exhausted lately, so trying to do work has been hard. I also

think that all of us are getting a little tired of sitting in this room that they put us in. But, we do

only have a little bit over a month left. Basically, within the needs assessment, there is a whole

page in regards to the focus group. There are five main questions that are asked:

1. What do you think are the top five key needs of low-income persons in your
community?
2. What suggestions can you provide on how the needs could be addressed?
3. What do you think are some key community revitalization needs?
4. How do you think our community can address the identified community
revitalization needs?
5. Do you have any other feedback?

So, we have to slightly dissect the transcription in order to find accurate feedback to properly

answer these questions. I do know that all of the answers are there, because when we wrote the

different things to be back, we made sure to pull predominately from these five in order to get

accurate answers. After we look through and highlight everything, I will see if any questions

need to be changed, added or modified in order to fit our group that we had. Hopefully, by the

end of this week or the early start of next week, the needs assessment will be 100% complete.

March 27th, 2019 (9:30 – 2:30) (5 hours)

Today, I did leave early because I honestly thought I was going to fall out from

exhaustion and also think the allergies and cold season are beginning to hit me pretty hard.

Overview was nice about letting me work from home though and I have completed everything
on the brochure but the photos. I do think it looks very nice and colorful, which is what

Overview was going for. Also, their old one had a bunch of outdated information, so I really

don’t know why it was being used for this long. The hours were wrong and they also didn’t even

have an address on there. On the inside, some of the program descriptions didn’t have the fully

updated versions of what was being performed. They also did not have a section on the rapid

rehousing program at all. So, there was a lot that needed to be touched up. But, I also think this

brochure has been being used since 2016, so it has been a very long time. I just think the

annoying part of this brochure and also the entire internship experience here, is that there seems

to be no guidelines on anything. I sent Wanda and Nancy a copy of what I had done and their

reply was to put everything into the Overview font…but never told me what the Overview font

was. And then when I ask, I never get a clear answer. So, the brochure is taking longer than it

should, because it takes forever to get any sort of reply here. Which isn’t just a problem that we

face, it seems like something the employees notice also. Communication is key when running a

business. We are never informed on anything and constantly walk into the room where we are

working with them doing energy assistance appointments and then we are pushed off into a

corner. I guess the word consistency is good when it comes to Overview here. Consistency

makes a good company and also helps for smooth running’s. I know that we are just interns, but

we do put in hard work here, and it seems like a lot of that is just very ignored at times.

March 28th, 2019 (8:00 – 4:00) (7 hours)

Today, we finally decided on a set in stone date for our presentation, which will be April

18th, during our lunch period at Overview. They do community meetings during the lunch period

sometimes and it seems like the best way to get the faculty together without interrupting
anyone’s work time. Also, today I took the needs assessment off of google docs and moved it

back into a word document. What we realized is that when we were doing the needs assessment

on google, when you would add in a graph, it would throw off so much of the work that had been

done. Things would get moved out of place and the charts would copy onto multiple pages. I

have had to go back and rearrange everything, make all the fonts the same, add the graphs next to

the charts and wording they needed to be by, etc. So, it was really just a cleaning and touch up

day. Overall, the whole thing looks really good and we are very excited to have it almost

complete. I think a lot of people at Overview have no clue what we have been working on, so

it’ll be exciting to present this to them. A lot of the information that we have found will help out

their jobs, especially when it comes to unsafe housing conditions and information relating the

elderly and poverty rates. It is crazy to think we only have a little more than a month left at the

internship. It has flown by. Tomorrow, I will be doing about an hour or two on adding in the

information from the focus group. It is a lot of wording that needs to be done and also, just

double checking all the pages of the transcription to make sure we have included everything of

importance. Like I have said previously, we did not expect the turn out of the focus group to be

so large, so there is a lot of information that was found. Going back and looking at everything

that has been said by the different people of the community has been fascinating. This is

information we would have never been able to hear about unless we did this internship.

Journal #13

Monday, April 8, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 HOURS)

Today was my first day back after my spring break vacation, so there were some things

that needed to be caught up on. We finally have a date that will work for our final project

presentation. Ansley and Mike have begun the power point, but I was doing a lot of work with

the transcription from our focus group. The process with this has mainly been going through and

figuring out common themes. There is a section in the needs assessment that deals with the focus

group and is looking for five of the main needs in the communities. The transcription is very

long because we did have fourteen people in attendance. So basically, I have been going through

and taking notes and highlighting what I see as something mentioned more than once. The main

things have been things like – employment/jobs, single mothers, transportation. After finding

these themes, I have been trying to look further into them and figure out what people said were

the main issues under these main topics and why they are such issues in the community. It has

been very interesting to go back through the transcription and have in written form what people

were saying. There were a lot of really good facts and ideas stated, but this is really just a starting

part. The focus group is a good tool to figure out what people in the community see as problems.

We may not have a solution for the problems yet, but getting them into the needs assessment

could hopefully show people what needs to be done.

Tuesday, April 9, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 HOURS)

Today, Mike and I split up the transcription to go further into detail and find different

quotes or ideas that will be ideal for our PowerPoint. The way I am trying to lay this out, is to
have a slide that shows the findings from the needs assessment/focus group. I will have the five

main issues that were seen, then, underneath these, have five slides that dive more into detail. I

feel like the focus group should be more than a page and a half in the needs assessment because

it is a very valuable tool. I may try to add in more information. What was done during the focus

group, is Overview and us coordinated to make up the different questions, but then underneath

the questions have little sub topics that felt went with the main question. The moderator would at

the end of each question and discussion, read out these points and take a count of how many

people saw these to be issues. I feel like it may be valuable to take these counts and add them in.

Because if say, all fourteen people saw something as a big issue, then it is more than likely other

people will see it as a big issue also. Ansley was in charge of inputting our survey data into

survey monkey and taking counts, so she has been adding all of that information into the

PowerPoint. I feel that things are coming together nicely and we have a lot to talk about. There

was a bit of miscommunication, especially since I was out of town, about the timing of our

project and how it is the company saying they do not have enough time for us to present for an

hour and a half. We will be talking with Dr. K later this week about this and some of our

concerns related to the issue.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 HOURS)

As I am sure is obvious, this week has been dedicated to making our PowerPoint for the

presentation, because we have a ton of information to add in and to cover. We will be doing a

video chat with Dr. K today because I think we are all stressing a little bit over this project. I

know we just don’t want a bunch of points taken off for the timing not being what it should be. I

know we could probably talk for an hour and a half on this project, because it is 100 pages. But,
the people at Overview only have an hour lunch break. Also, after being there, I really just do not

think the people would be too interested in sitting through the presentation. Half of them barely

know we are there at times. The experience has been good and I am happy to say that I have

completed a needs assessment, which will look very nice on my resume, but the experience at

Overview has just seemed so long. Today, we had the foster grandparents program come into the

office. The lady in charge, April, had asked if we would be willing to do a presentation for those

in attendance. We will be going over arthritis and the different types. Also, some tips and tricks

that may help to rid some of the pain. The presentation isn’t very long and I do not know what

they have planned after. But, we did compose some flyers with the different main points that

were stated in the PowerPoint so that they will be able to keep the information on them. There

was about 20 plus people that showed up, which was a little nerve racking at first since we

haven’t done a presentation in so long. But, it seemed to go well and everyone was asking

questions. Which, I think they were slightly confused about who we were and what our major

entails (even though we told them) because people were trying to ask us to basically diagnosis

them with arthritis. So, we had to throw out the “I would contact your health care provider”

multiple times. But, Mike demonstrated some different methods to help ease some joint pain and

we talked about different exercises and foods that may help also. I do love presenting and love

when people get involved with the discussion, so this went very well in my opinion. The rest of

the day will be dedicated to the project though.

Thursday, April 11, 2019 (8:00 to 5:00) (8 HOURS)

Today, we moved on to the information regarding our data collection methods. The main

method we used to get the secondary data was the census bureau, but I definitely wanted to add
in the details, because this was a VERY long process. There hasn’t been a main census done

since 2010, so we were having to go off of the estimates. But, there were three year estimates,

one year estimates, five year estimates, and estimates just based on small counties. So, I have

dedicated a slide just to describing the different methods. Also, I began to go through the needs

assessment and find the topics and add a list of what was covered in there. From here, I have

started to break up the main topics and list underneath what different things we found data from.

For example, a main thing covered was “Age and Race” so this is a main topic. But, in the needs

assessment we broke it down into: Race and Gender, Age and Gender, Ethnicity and Gender, etc.

So, I have started doing slides that show these break downs and an example of the graphs and

charts that were formed. Also, I have been listing where the data was found and how we found it.

I want to really show the amount of work that was put into this thing because it was honestly not

easy. This weekend, I will be trying to finish this up on Saturday or at least put about two hours

in. Because, there are around 15 main topics that all have subtopics and charts. The goal is to

have this PowerPoint done on Monday so that we can start to rehearse and figure out what each

person will say.

Journal #14

April 15, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 hours)

With the internship presentation being on Thursday, we still have a lot of things to

complete before. Firstly, the needs assessment has to be completely done and looking the best it
can, since we need to have it printed out in order to follow along with our presentation. I have

been going through and triple checking everything. This meaning, making sure all of the charts

are looking the same, adding in graphs where they need to be added, and typing out the page that

goes along with the focus group. The layout that they had on the original needs assessment in

regards to the focus group was not as lengthy as I felt it should be. The information that we

obtained from this is very valuable and I feel that we should include as much as possible. In the

original needs assessment, they just did bullet pointed lists. I have been trying to go in under the

lists and add in information that I feel will be beneficial for people going back and looking at the

needs assessment in the future. So for example, a large need that people felt of importance was

childcare. So I have this as one of the main bullets, but underneath I have been trying to say

WHAT about childcare is of importance. These being, childcare on the weekends, late night

childcare, childcare that is based off of income, etc. I think that people seeing more than just

childcare and actually having in there what was stated from people that live in the counties, will

allow more ways to plan out things that can be done to help. As with the graphs, when we started

doing the needs assessment on the google doc, some of the graphs were not copying correctly.

When we transferred the google doc to a word doc, some of the graphs weren’t there or were

completely out of place. So I have been having to go back and make sure they are in the proper

location.

April 16, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (9 hours)

After finally adding in everything in regards to the needs assessment into the PowerPoint,

we have had to go back and add in what else we have done at Overview. I did some of this at

home tonight in regards to going back and finding photos and typing out the different activities
that we partook in. We have added in information discussing the health fair that Overview

hosted, our time at the senior home, some of the PowerPoint presentations we have done, and

also the blanket program. The plan has just been to briefly touch on these subjects in the

PowerPoint but then talk about them more once we are presenting. The hard part about making

this presentation has been that there is so much information that we can talk about, but we don’t

want the slides to be overcrowded. So we have really just been trying to do the key information

that we find of importance then going back when we are presenting and talking more in detail

about everything. The needs assessment has honestly been difficult to talk about on the slides

because a lot of the information is data. Making it more visual has kind of been our tactic by

adding in examples of the different graphs we have completed and this discussing how we found

the data and what the data is about. Overall though, everything is wrapping up nicely and the

PowerPoint looks good. I had doubts that we would be able to talk for long enough, but after

looking at all the information we have, there will be enough points to go over.

April 17, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 hours)

When we got to Overview today, they had informed us that they will actually be closed

tomorrow for good Friday, even though it is a Thursday. This has sent us all into a frenzy since

we are supposed to present our presentation tomorrow. A majority of the day has been spent

trying to contact Dr. K to let him know that we will have to reschedule. I know he has been out

watching presentations, so our director has left him a few voicemails. We are now scheduled to

present next Wednesday at the same time. This slightly frustrates me because for one, I was

ready to get the presentation over with so that we can put all of our focus into the weebly aspect

of the project. But secondly, it goes to show how unorganized Overview can be at times. For
them to tell us a day in advanced that they are closed and we need to reschedule our presentation

is poor on their part. Ansley has been sick for a large portion of the week with strep throat, so we

all are still meeting tomorrow to finish up some final parts of the project, that way, next week can

be dedicated to practicing presenting and making sure we are meeting our time point. Also, we

helped out one of the employees at Overview today by finding her updated crisis information

(crisis being things like fires, hurricanes, etc.). All of the websites that she had, had not been

updated since 2008. So, a lot of these sites were not even around anymore. We dug through the

FEMA website and the Red Cross in order to provide updated websites that could potentially

help people plan for a crisis and also who to contact during one. I spent some more time today

adding in different graphs. The frustrating part about the old needs assessment is that there would

be charts for say “age and sex” but then when they broke it down into “sex and ethnicity” there

would be no charts. It all seemed to be a little inconsistent about why there would be a graph for

one, but not a graph for something of the same importance. So, Mike has been showing me how

to properly create the graphs and add them into the word document. I am a firm believe that

consistency and easy to read will make this needs assessment turn out very well.

April 18, 2019 (1:00 – 6:00) (5 hours)

Today we spent some time getting together while Overview was closed just to go over

who is going to discuss what and how we are going to split up the presentation. Mike is going to

start out for us with the introduction and a bit about the other projects we partook in. I am more

than likely going to be going over the focus group since I am the one who went back through the

transcriptions and picked out all the key points. But, the more we look at it, the more we realized

that a lot of this work was done together so it is hard to split it up. Like I did a lot of work on the
charts of the needs assessment, Ansley did a lot of work with the surveys, and Mike did a lot of

work with the initial planning of the focus group. We are trying to finish up the outline for the

presentation but want to add in who is saying what. This will probably be discussed more

tomorrow just so like I stated earlier, when Monday comes around, we will be able to start

practicing. I know we are all ready to get the project over and are also excited to show the

employees at Overview what we have been working on the past few months we have been there.

Everyone has not seen the final product yet or knows the extent we had to go through for those

surveys or the focus group, so we are excited to be able to brag a little bit. Tomorrow we do plan

to meet for a few hours to finish up the outline. I know that when we start practicing presenting

on Monday that parts will be changed around, so nothing is finalized yet.

April 22, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (8 Hours)

Today we are trying to finalize the PowerPoint for the presentation due to the fact that we

will be presenting on Wednesday. Tomorrow, we will be out of office for a couple hours since we

are going over to Freedom Church to partake in a feeding that they do weekly. We are basically

done with everything on the PowerPoint, it just took us a while to get information for the key

informants due to people being slow to get replies. But, once we get all of this added in, we will

really just need to finalize the “who is saying what” and then begin our outline for the

presentation. I know that the people at Overview are very excited to see what we have put
together. Like I have said before, some people are not very talkative with us here and I really do

not think they have an idea what we have been working on. I guess the only thing today that has

been a little frustrating is that the room that we are in is being used by the Energy Assistance

Program to do more appointments. It gets to be pretty loud and makes it rather complicated to

focus after a while. I guess the bright side is we only have about a two weeks left here. I have

enjoyed my time at Overview, don’t get me wrong. I just think with us being the first set of

interns that they have had, they just didn’t really have much planned for us. Everyone here

though has been very supportive during our time interning. It will be a little weird to be done

next week and knowing that this has come to an end. We are looking forward to presenting to

everyone so that we can show off the needs assessment that will hopefully leave a benefit for

Overview.

April 23, 2019 (8:00 – 5:00) (10.5 Hours)

Today at ten thirty, we are going over to the church to set up a booth in regards to

Overview and the services they provide. The give center has partnered with some students at

Georgia College to set up this slight community fair. We are going to be going to their weekly

feeding and setting up a table, along with others, to talk to those who are there. It will be a good

way to get the information out about Overview, especially for those that need the help and don’t

know about us. When we got to the church, there was a lot of people. According to Nancy, there

are usually more people that are there, that the turnout was relatively small. I would say there

was about 60 people there, maybe more. It seemed like there was a great program going on with

volunteers everywhere and some great booths. They had family connections, communities in

schools, the goodwill, and more. Like Nancy told me, this is also a good way for us to get
involved with other organizations. We spoke to the people at the goodwill for a while, because

apparently they do career training and also offer careers. This will be so good for Overview due

to the fact that we get many people that are coming in needing work or can’t keep a job or don’t

know the proper way to apply. It was fascinating to be able to interact with those who attending

and let them know about Overview. I had honestly never heard of Overview until I started my

internship here, but almost everyone that came up to the table knew about us and at least one of

the programs we have to offer. The Energy Assistance is usually the one that targets most people

and with us doing Cooling Assistance this summer, people were incredibly interested. I enjoyed

today because it gives us an opportunity to leave the office and interact with those in the

community. We were here till a little after two and once we retuned the rest of the day was

geared towards to project. I did do some work at home tonight in relation to gathering statistics

for the internship and also making sure everything was correct for the focus group slides and also

the needs assessment. This was just the final part of gathering everything together in order to

make sure we were ready for tomorrow.

April 24, 2019 (8:00 – 4:00) (7 Hours)

Today we finally got to do our project presentation. After dealing with rescheduling and timing,

it has finally worked out. I am excited to be able to show everyone what we have done and also

to get it over with. This whole project presentation has caused me a bit of stress just because I

was worried we wouldn’t have enough to talk about. But, I did spend some time gathering a

bunch of statistics last night in order to pull these from the needs assessment and talk about them

while we present. With the needs assessment being 100 pages or so long, there is no way that we

would be able to put all of that information on the PowerPoint. So, for each section, I have gone
through and talked about what is included and also pulled some statistics out to show that the

needs assessment has been completed. It will not be the most interesting thing to listen in on, but,

we are just trying to show that we are done. Mike is starting us off by going over the other things

we have been involved with at Overview – so things like the Energy Program and the Senior

Activities Center. Then, Ansley is going into detail about focus group and all of the planning and

findings that went along with it. Lastly, I will be finishing us off with the breakdown of the needs

assessment and how we completed it. Looking at everything, I am realizing that we have a lot of

information to touch on. I made notecards last night and I have over 10 slides to talk about.

When I got to Overview this morning, I went through and typed myself us a sort of transcript just

so I will have something to follow while going through the slides. All of this information came

out to over seven pages, so I am not as worried about time now. I personally think the

presentation went well. It is complicated to go through everything because there is a lot of

information that we all worked on together. So splitting everything up was difficult to figure out

and we all ended up chiming in a little bit at times. We also went the full hour and a half, which

is what we were worried about. After we all began talking, we were able to speak for the thirty

minute periods and it wasn’t as hard as we had thought it was going to be. We had a few people

sit in from Overview but not very many. We were mainly just trying to let our directors and Dr. K

know what we had completed anyway. I am very relieved to be done and now we are trying to

have everything done on the needs assessment by Monday.

April 25, 2019 (8:00 – 4:00) (7 Hours)

So as stated yesterday in regards to the needs assessment. All of the data is completely finished.

But, we have had to go back and add in a bunch of writing for the focus group and for the key
informant interviews. Also, cosmetics has been a big part of the needs assessment. We want for

this to look perfect due to the fact that Overview uses this needs assessment in order to get grants

and also they publish it on their website. I think I have been worried due to the fact that we have

never done a needs assessment before, that it will not look good. But, after going back through

and making all of our charts look similar and adding in some color to them, it is starting to come

together. I am still having to figure out some of the graphs, because we do have some data sets

that have negative decreases and we can’t make a chart for that. There should be a way on excel

that I can maybe do an actual increase decrease graph to show off the decline in poverty rates.

Over all though, this should be complete by Monday and then we really only have a few days left

which is crazy. The aim today was to finish making the charts look similar for the needs

assessment that way on Monday everything else will just be changing fonts and making sure we

have all of the required information. I think next week, Nancy, our supervisor is going to give us

a little project to work on so that we won’t have nothing to do. We were also a little worried

about getting the required amount of hours since we all work and sometimes have to leave early

for our jobs. So Nancy gave us a project to work on this weekend. This project is basically us

making two flyers for their Rapid Rehousing Program and the Homeless Prevention Program

that show information just on these programs for them to handout. (4 hours dedicated on Sunday

to this project. Will need to finish this week)
