Instructions: Watch the video and read the article linked here and answer the following
questions:
1. Define the term game theory. How does the definition we’ve gone over in class differ
from how the article talks about game theory?
Assume that there are two players in a game: Goalie and Scorer. Scorer is awarded a
penalty shot that Goalie must stop. Assume that Scorer and Goalie have no prior information
regarding the play of their competitor.
As the video and article state, “Goalkeepers have just 0.4 seconds, the time it takes you to blink,
to save a penalty kick.” Thus we can make the assumption that both Goalie and Scorer
predetermine their moves making this a simultaneous game. For simplicity, let’s say both
Goalie and Scorer have two choices: Left and Right. If both Goalie and Scorer choose the same
direction, Scorer scores a goal and Scorer gets one point (+1) and Goalie loses one point (-1). If
Goalie and Scorer chose opposite directions, Goalie saves the attempt and Scorer loses one
point (-1) and Goalie gets one point (+1).
LEFT RIGHT
LEFT +1,-1 -1,+1
2. Is there a dominant strategy associated with this game? Why or why not? Use the
definition of a dominant strategy to answer this question.
No hay una estratégia dominante ya que en este juego ambos jugadores obtienen beneficios,
esta es una estratégia mixta.
3. Is there a pure strategy nash equilibrium with this game? Why or why not? Use the
definition of a pure strategy nash equilibrium to answer this question.
5. Is there a mixed strategy nash equilibrium with this game? Why or why not? Use the
definition of a mixed strategy nash equilibrium to answer this question.
Hay una estrategía mixta pero no hay un equilibrio de Nash, debido a que ambos jugadores no
conocen la mejor estratégia, cada jugador individual no gana nada modificando su estrategia
modificando la suya.
