Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Ask students to sit in a circle
2. Hello Kindergartners! I’m Ms. Deirdre. When I saw you last week, we sang a song called
“I Have A Little Echo”. When we were singing, we kept the steady beat by tapping on
our lap.
3. Music can have a steady beat, and we can also keep a steady beat when we’re saying a
rhyme. Does anybody have a favorite rhyme?
a. Take a few responses
4. Today we’re going to learn a silly rhyme that has four lines. I’ll draw a rainbow on the
board for each line
a. Draw four rainbows on the board

Present
1. Keep the steady beat on your lap while I speak the rhyme.
a. Demonstrate patsching
2. Say the rhyme by yourself. Point to the corresponding rainbow when you speak a line.
Keep the beat in your hand while you point.
3. Which lines were the same?
a. Anticipated answer: the first and the last rainbow
4. Teach the rest of the rhyme using my turn/your turn verse by verse. Then do two lines at
a time. Then say the entire rhyme yourself and then have the class say the entire rhyme
after you.
Practice and Extend
1. Where else can we keep the steady beat?
a. Anticipated answers: patting head, stomping feet etc.
2. Do two or three more repetitions of the rhyme while keeping the beat steady in these new
ways
Assess and Close
1. I have one more way we can keep the steady beat. Everybody sit down in the circle. Now
do what I do.
a. Model bean bag passing gesture without bean bag. Repeat until the students are
all doing it
2. My turn!
a. Say rhyme yourself
3. Have students say rhyme with you
4. Now, let’s pass around this bean bag while keeping our steady beat
