INTRODUCTION

Our world today is changing very rapidly. Due to climate change, weather condition

is now unpredictable. Floods are more devastating than ever and due to this certain

structures are constructed to prevent or reduce flood.

Riprap are built as protection and minimize flooding and control the flow of water

during heavy rainfall. Due to the velocity and the moment of the discharge of

water/overflows from the water. It is a must to build this structure in Brgy. Tabawan

Calbayog City to prevent heavy flood just like what happen on the damage caused by a

Typhoon Usman. A devastating tragic that damage most of the livelihood of the citizen

of Brgy. Tabawan.

According to the resident of Brgy. Tabawan they suffer from flood during heavy rain

and typhoons. Because there are no riprap built along the riverside. During hightide and

heavy rainfall the river overflows and reaches the village. We’ve come up a better

solution to this problem is to build a seawall. The design of the seawall will be based on

technical data gathered sources, certainly we hope for a good come outcome of the

research that enables others to be informed and to be enriched with useful informations

that would produce more studies and development of the existing riprap design.
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

The design of the rip-rap needed proper planning, designing and be examined very well

to ensure that the design used would consistently accepts acceptability for its intended

use. The design of the rip-rap was referred to other existing designs. Rip-rap is a very

complex work. Because of this complexity there are many things that were considered

and data that were gathered that enabled the researchers to come up with sufficient and

appropriate design that used in barangay Tabawan.

With thorough planning and analysis the researchers came up of a rip-rap design. This

enabled the researchers to come up with the idea on what is the outcome of the

proposed design. The design of the rip-rap was based in consideration of the standards

and procedures in designing rip-rap. It was referred to on the data gathered the survey.

The formulas used in the design were also referred on the existing formulas that were

applicable to the study. The basic principles and theories of the study were studied

carefully for the purpose of designing the rip-rap. Thus, formulas were used to solve the

maximum capacity that the rip-rap thru the discharges from the overflows of the river it

can carry during rainfall, high tides and heavy rains. The design of the river control

system followed existing standards and procedures in designing river control system.

Proper designing, rules and regulations has been followed to avoid interaction with the

law in the future implementation of the project. Rainfall intensity was based on the data

gathered from PAGASA and wasa used in solving discharges using the discharge

rational formula used by the DPWH. Theissen method formula based on interpretation

of precipition is used to solve for the average rainfall in a particular area annually.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The proposed river control system serves and protects all cause beyond the damages

with in the public and private property, soil erosion, and means of livelihood. It is of our

high – interest to apply our knowledge having in our educational know how in designing

river control system and other structure related to it. To come up with a more sufficient

design and solve primarily problems concerning the failure of the structure.

Here are some of the objectives considered in the study:

1. To measure the dimension of the river in Brgy. Tabawan Calbayog City

2. To measure Maximum height of the water during flooding

3. To design a river control system that can withstand the maximum discharge of

the water due to heavy rainfalls.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In Calbayog City, river control systems are essential due to unpredictable rainfall and

weather conditions especially in area near the river. The design of the river control

system was significant in order to reduce flooding. River control systems are needed in

a progressing city just like Calbayog City. In order to prevent immediate flooding due to

rainfall, river control systems are established in different areas where floods are

occurring. This is important to help barangay Tabawan in their strong desire to

implement the proposed river control system. This study aimed to develop a river

control system that will help solve the flooding in barangay Tabawan.

With this, the researchers found out that the study is significant to the following:

Government Officials. This study will serve as basis in making policies, programs and

specifications that are relates to river control systems.

Community. This will inform the community for the purpose of drainage system that will

enable them to understand its intended use. It gives more stable and permanently

settled community. It will protect of their lives within this area.

Researchers. To gain more knowledge in designing structure of this project study.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study extend from the survey of the area, gathering data to

determination of discharge with the use to the design of concrete and masonry. The

survey covers the data needed for the topographic map of the area in order to

determine the highest and lowest point which will be used in the analysis. The
computation of discharged covers the analysis of the network where in from there you

can see where is the main canal. The computation of discharged also covers the

analysis for the residential establishment discharged classified as store, restaurant,

boarding house and hotel. The government and private establishment classified as

school, hospital, offices and plaza. This also covers the storm infiltration discharged

considering the maximum rainfall intensity data from the PAGASA.

The capacity of the section design with the higher percentage of

accuracy to sustain its durability in order to carry maximum discharge of water. The

design of masonry includes the analysis of the thickness of the wall that covers to what

kind or what size of bars to be used. There is also a thing to be considered in the

computation, that is the freeboard, the design of inlet and catch basin and the design of

the cover whether it is concrete blocks on steel. The proposed study excluded the

design of the seismic effect due to scouring of wave for reasons that there is a capable

record of structural damage during calamity such as typhoons and earthquake.
