Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Light and Sound waves

Content Area: Science

Grade Level(s): 8th

Content Standard Addressed: S8P4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to support the claim
that electromagnetic (light) waves behave differently than mechanical (sound) waves.

Technology Standard Addressed: 4. Innovative Designer:

Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new,
useful or imaginative solutions.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

URL(s) to support the lesson: NONE

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I would incorporate an online project, collaborating site, or student publishing opportunity in my classroom
by turning the standard of light and sound waves into a presentation report using iReport CNN. My students
will explain and study the differences and similarities between light and sound waves. They will also be
interpreting how they work, how they are used, why they are used, and to what extend do we s humans need
the light sources. After gaining the knowledge needed for the project, they will make a presentation about
their work.
Using online learning techniques with technology will cause higher Loti levels as well as provide the students
will a universal design for learning. By giving the students options to work with, their minds can become more
creative and the projects in general will be assessing student learning in only positive aspects. I will be using
online learning projects such as collaborating sites and iReport to enhance student learning and causing my
students to trust technology and understand how helpful and beneficial it is inside as well as outside the
classroom.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? The
technologies needed to implement this proposed learning activity in the classroom is a computer and the
internet. Full access to the collaborating site is all that is needed, but it must have wifi and have full
connection in oder to view the page. The students must be knowledgeable with computers as well in order to
know how to use the computer successfully for an A as a grade.

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school:
The collaboration with peers is in the project and presentation because it involved being in groups. The
focus of my lesson plan is to be with your peers working on it inside and outside of the classroom.
Teachers, parents, and mentors can provide help on the iReport website or in person.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will be creating their own product such as the
presentation on light and sound waves. They are producing their own knowledge and information,
which causes them to be engaged and creative during this group project.

c. Higher-order thinking: higher-order thinking is involved when working with the subject matter of
science. Light and sound waves can be challenging to understand, but when connecting it to outside
resources and everyday activity, it can be interesting to learn and cause a higher-order of thinking.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students will
be publishing their original presentations to iReport for other students, teachers, administrators, or
parents to view and read in order to understand more about light and sound waves. Copy-right is
always evident, but students should be aware of that when sharing their original work to the
collaborating site.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: To extend and support learning experience for all my students, for the project I will involve
different forms of creativity for all students to be interactive and understand the material in a fun, productive
way that all students can understand.
Representation: The students will be able to present their projects, so every student is physically viewing
other groups work, making the Universal Design for Learning accessible to all students in the classroom.
Action and Expression: Students will not only have a physical form of their presentation, but audio is a
requirement, so all students can listen and be involved in the presentations. The students being vocal makes
the Universal Design for learning evident in all the students, making understanding the material
understandable.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Possible problems that can occur with internet
safety and student privacy that could implement the learning experience would be if a student put personal
information in their presentation project. Student privacy can also be given away if their presentation gets out
onto the web or somebody else is in possession of the project. Student privacy and internet safety is necessary
in any classroom, but specifically in a project such as this one. I will minimize the risk to students and myself by
making it clear of the rules being do not add personal information or anything that could put the students or
myself in jeopardy. In the case of parents and administrators being concerned, I will have permission slips for
publishing the presentation on iReport as well as giving the principle an exact step by step production of the
project given to the students. I do not want any concerns, so making it clear of copyright and protection is the
main goal. I will make sure to follow every and all internet safety policies by double checking my work for
copyright as well as using student information. Being aware of what is in your project and who is allowed to
hold onto your project is an important factor.

Reflective Practice: After creating this specific lesson idea, I feel the activities I created could impact student
learning by having creative techniques and different ways of explanation that requires more thinking for the
students. To further extend the lesson on light and sound waves, even though I did not do this as the initial
introductory, I would have another project involving researching light and sound waves and everything they
are about. I would involve outside sources for creativity and interest. Other technology tools that could further
enhance this project include video and audio tools like in other lessons and even student response systems for
a quiz at the end of the standard, which was planned anyway.
