6. Catalog Description
An introductory course designed to prepare students to handle the major types of communication
situations that they will encounter in life, including interpersonal communication, group
communication, and public speaking. No major or minor credit.

7. Course Purpose / Goals


Fundamentals of Oral Communication is designed to give students an understanding of the
foundations of communication practice. This course is designed as a general education
requirement, as well as an introduction to the communications department.

The outcome of this course will prepare students for a wide variety of communication related
circumstances in the professional world.

Participation (15%): Showing up to class and being an active participant, in-class assignments.

Quizzes (15%): Often, we will have quizzes covering the content which is assigned. Quizzes will
cover both lecture and textbook readings.

Speech Two (25%)

Final (20%): A comprehensive exam covering the material we have gone over during the semester;
key concepts, lectures, and presentation.

12. Grading Policy / Scale


There is a rubric attached to each assignment. Please make sure that you check if your work
fulfills the rubric before you submit your assignment.

The course is a face-to-face and requires regular attendance for the student to be successful.
Participation and quiz points cannot be made up in the case of absence from class. If there are
extenuating circumstances for missing class, please contact the instructor ahead of time.
