ARTIFACT: Copyright Presentation

The Copyright presentation was developed in the ITEC 7445 course. This artifact was developed
to support teachers and students with understanding the nuances of copyright and appropriate
ways to combat the potential of copyright infringement. The presentation was created with
Google Slides and functions as an interactive game instead of a traditional presentation. The
intention behind this structure was to ensure that viewers remained engaged and were exposed to
potential scenarios they could apply to their own environments. Although the presentation was
developed with elementary teachers and students in mind, its applicable to higher education, as
well. This presentation was completed independently.

The copyright presentation demonstrates the ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy,
legal, and ethical uses of digital content and technologies. More specifically, this artifact
focused on how to appropriately curate images using Common Sense media and a variety of
search tools that support the legal use and modification of content for educational purposes. With
the expectation of not presenting this artifact to an audience, I created it to be self-paced. Users
work through multiple scenarios and situations that are common for teachers and students.
Guiding users through this self-paced experience allowed me to facilitate best practices that
aligned with fair use, face-to-face instruction, and virtual instruction. Additionally, the artifact
models the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital images, content, and technologies for
teachers and students by assessing their understanding of what copyright infringement is versus
what it is not.

When I was a classroom teacher, I often joked that teachers were the best thieves. In a profession
where creating and developing creative/original material requires a great deal of time, it is
usually easier to use material that is already provided. Developing this artifact was enlightening,
because I learned a variety of strategies that I can share with students and teachers in my role as
an instructional technology coach that are not as arduous as I perceived them to be when I was
teaching. Exposing teachers and students to search options and Common Sense Media equips
them with strategies that are necessary to appropriately leverage and create with digital material.
It also indirectly informs teachers of the structures that are in place to protect their own content.
Although this artifact was not shared with teachers or students, it would useful and applicable for
K-Higher Ed environments through its self-paced activities.

Although this particular artifact was not shared with school stakeholders, the information that I
gained aligns with the digital citizenship components that teachers are required to address each
year. Within the aforementioned digital citizenship tools, there are lessons where I can support
teachers and students that address appropriately digesting and using content online. The
information gained from developing this artifact has continued to influence the images and
content that I use when I am developing my own material to share with teachers. As I model the
creation of material, I am passing these strategies to teachers, as well.
