The Home & Garden Tour, being held on Saturday, November 20, includes 10 of the
Otamatea area’s most remarkable homes and gardens, each of which has a very different
character.
Among the homes included are Lockwood and Alexandra Smith's renovated art-deco home
Woodleigh, the architecturally significant Haigh House, the Swiss-flavoured Zweisheim, the
majestic natives and flowers of Bushy Park and the historic colonial homesteads of Batley House
and The Pines.
Otamatea High School PTCA Chairperson Pam Chapman says that Otamatea, which stretches
along the northern side of the Kaipara Harbour, has a distinctive character and is rich in history.
“Many people drive through Otamatea without realising the treasures that abound just a few kilome-
tres off State Highway 12. In pioneer days, it was at the centre of the kauri industry and pastoral
farms were established.
“The area’s character is well-represented in a cross-section of homes and gardens. There are re-
cently renovated homes: Woodleigh, a 1914 villa, a 1900 homestead, and The Haigh House, built
in 1942 and moved from Remuera; several country homes each with a original and different per-
sonality; two colonial homes, The Pines, built in the 1880s, and Batley House, built in stages from
1865, and beautifully-landscaped Bushy Park offering an easy ramble through established native
bush and around the lake.
Pam says the PTCA has organised the tour to raise funds for Otamatea High School and its
students.
During the day, light snacks and tea will be served at two homes and a coffee cart will be at one of
the properties.
The houses will open at 9.30am and the last entry is at 3.50pm. Unfortunately there will be no
disabled access or entry for children under 14.
Tickets, which cost $40 are available from National Bank(Walton Street Branch), Whangarei
Waipu Hammer Hardware (Waipu), Buy the Way (Kaiwaka), Otamatea High School
(Maungaturoto), Paparoa Drapery (Paparoa), First National Roper Jones (Dargaville), Main
Street Interiors (Dargaville), Wellsford Sports and Leisure Centre (Wellsford).
