the existence of the legendary
KYBER SABER, an ancient
weapon with the ability to
channel the Force to its most
destructive potential. And now
that the EMPEROR knows
about it, he wants it. A lot.
The Emperor has commanded
DARTH VADER to find the
saber for him. Fortunately, it
was shattered long ago, with
its crystal fragments hidden
throughout the galaxy to prevent
their power from being used
for evil. But nothing can be lost
forever, and the quest to unite
the Kyber Saber is about to
draw in an unlikely young trio
of heroes: the FREEMAKERS,
a family of siblings who run a
humble starship salvage and
repair shop aboard the space
station known as THE WHEEL.
Although they don’t know it,
the Freemakers are about to
be caught up in an adventure
that may decide the future of
the galaxy …

As Rowan faced almost certain doom, a mysterious
and powerful figure came to his rescue with the aid
of a blazing lightsaber. Revealing herself to be one
of the last Jedi Knights, Naare told the Freemakers
about the Emperor’s plot to find the Kyber Saber.
Although she must keep her identity a secret, she
has promised to help Rowan train in the Force
so they can locate the crystal fragments first.

How do you bring a location
that only exists inside a
computer-animated TV
show into reality? We
enlisted the skills of LEGO®
Lead Model Designer
Erik Varszegi to make a
one-of-a-kind custom model
of the Freemaker Salvage
and Repair hangar bay, built
out of real LEGO bricks and
scaled to LEGO® Star Wars™
minifigures! Looking like it
came right out of the show,
the model is packed with
details, including sliding
doors, extra rooms, and
even working electric lights.
Here’s what Erik had to
say about his spectacular
Star Wars creation!

How big is the assembled
hangar model, and how
long did it take to build?
The hangar bay floor is 20
inches wide by 28 deep,
but there are all sorts of
offices and workshops and
equipment bays that had working doors and spare
to be added. The model space suits and helmets.

What do the lights in the
model do?
There are four switches
that control key areas: the
main lighting in the ceiling
and equipment bays, the
smaller rooms like the back
office on the second floor
and the sleeping cubbies
as well as the airlock, the
amber emergency lights
in the columns (you can
change the color of the
light based on what color
bricks you put over them),
and the last and coolest
light effect is the force field
that protects the hangar
from the vacuum of space.
This is something you see
in all Star Wars
hangars, from
the Death
Star to Rebel

Alliance capital ships. I ran
an LED light strip all the
way around the mouth of
the bay and hid it behind
transparent and aqua-
colored tiles. This gives it a
weird, subtle greenish glow.
It was totally an experiment.
Do you know how many
bricks you used?
I’m not exactly sure. I did
the actual construction
old-school style, with
lots and lots of bins of
parts around me, and it’s
difficult to keep track of
how much is going into it
as you build. I did some

that had some 7,000
virtual elements in it. If
I had to guess, the final
model has five or six times
that number.
Can you share any tips
to help fans design and
build their own LEGO®
Star Wars™ creations?
The best advice I can give
is when you get a new
LEGO set, open it up and
build it by the instructions.
You can learn quite a
bit about new elements
and new techniques to
use them with your old
bricks. Play with your
new set for a few days,
but then take it apart and
maybe mix it with other
bricks to come up with
something completely
new and different using
what you have learned
from those instructions.
This is basically what the
Freemakers are doing
when they build Uglies
together: coming up with
something cool from their
own imaginations.
