Improving The Air Quality In Your Home

There are number of factors that affects our health on daily basis, the quality of air that we
inhale is one of the most important factor. According to a recent report published by the Lung
Association, more than 142 million people- 75% of the nation's population - are breathing
unhealthy amounts of air pollution. Though outdoor polluted air is not good for health, indoor
polluted air is more dangerous for our health. It was also shown by Environmental Protection
studies that levels of indoor pollutants are 2 to 5 times, higher then outdoor levels. Since it is
estimated that most people spend about 90% of their time indoors, the issue of exposure to
airborne contaminants indoors is of particular concern.

What Are Air Purifiers?

One can classify air purifier in two categories: in air purifier with filters and air purifier without
filter. The latter are subdivided into air washers and ionizers. In the following article, we explain
which types are why and then look at Photocatalysis air purifiers.

Air Filters Systems And Filter Sizes

There are several types of filters. Almost all devices use a so-called HEPA filter, whereby HEPA
stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter, i.e. a highly efficient particulate filter. Such a
HEPA filter is reminiscent of a kind of "mat"; it is very close meshed and can filter particles
down to a size of about 0.1 microns (that is 1 / 10,000 millimeters).

Most air purifiers integrate other systems in addition to the HEPA filter. For example, one often
finds charcoal filters; such filters have above all a cleaning effect; Pollutants are filtered out of
the air as well as withheld cigarette smoke. Activated carbon filters are not only popular in air
purifiers; these are also used in gas masks or extractor hoods.

TiO2 filters, which are Titanium Oxide filters, have the same effect as the other filters - they
filter odors and toxins from the room air. In addition, they are still antibacterial and against
viruses and fungi.

There are also special filters that can be configured individually with some manufacturers such
as Photocatalysis. For example, an "influenza" virus filter can be installed during the flu season,
which should then restrain the corresponding influenza virus. Other applications for special
filters are foreign bodies that are smaller than 0.1 microns and cannot be detected by the
normal filters.
A self-cleaning coating sometimes precedes the filters mentioned. This ensures that larger
particles are retained right at the beginning of the filter chain and do not clog the following,
more sensitive filters. This also extends the life of the other filters. A middle filter in some
devices supplements the pre-filter.

Which filters are used depends on the design system of the manufacturer, the device class and,
of course, the market segment of the air cleaner. Extremely powerful filters are usually only
available for professional equipment intended for industrial applications. For household use
you can choose normal purifiers to maintain clean atmosphere at home.
