ANA 2.1 Assess how visual perception is manipulated to communicate both objective reality and
illusionary concepts.
ANA 2.2 Compare and contrast art techniques and concepts from other visual media to enhance
the impact of animated media.

OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the animation industry and the training/school needed
2. Identify and define the 12 fundamentals of animation
3. Apply the 12 fundamentals of animation
4. Productively use animation software
a. Develop a character
b. Create a walk cycle
c. Use of backgrounds and interactive props
PREREQUISITES
1. Understanding of the Production Process (from previous lessons)
2. Able to productively use the drawing tablet and vector drawing software (from previous
lessons)
INSTRUCTION
Anticipatory Set:
1. Students take Intro to Animation survey & pre-test
2. Through lecture and discussion, students are given insight and discuss what they know
and like about animation. Instructor should play examples of the discussed animations
on the classroom projector.
○ Different styles of animation
○ 2D vs. 3D
○ Different applications of animation
3. Hand out/assign and have students complete the Animation Industry worksheet
4. Inform students that they are going to create their own animation.
Main Activity:
1. Have students watch the 12 Principles of Animation video (classroom projector)
2. Discussion about the 12 Principles of Animation with formative assessment. If students
are still unsure about the principles the instructor can give additional examples of the
principles using animations found online.
3. Using the drawing tablets and vector based drawing software, have students create a
character. The type of character is up to the student but the character needs to be able
to “walk”.
4. Using same tablets and software, have students create different facial expressions for
their character. Minimum 4 + original “resting” face.
○ Example: Angry, Happy, Sad, Surprised
5. Have students save their projects as they finish
6. When the students are finished, or at a good stopping point, instructor should play on
the projector Adobe Animate Basics tutorial video
Guided Practice:
1. Inform students that they will now take their saved characters and send them to
animation software.
2. Using the classroom projector, instructor models how to transfer the saved vector
character illustration to an animation software (Adobe Animate)
3. Inform students to transfer their character drawing to the animation software. Instructor
should walk the classroom to assist students if/when needed.
4. Using the classroom projector, instructor models how to create a basic animation.
Animation should include:
○ Character walk cycle
○ Background that gives insight to the setting
○ Prop that the character interacts with
5. Instruct the students to begin to create their own animation using their character. Walk
the room to check for understanding and give assistance when needed.
Assessment:
1. Formative assessment: discussions:
2. Formative assessment: walk the class:
3. Summative assessment: Animation1 quiz:
4. Summative assessment: Final video project:
Reflection:
1. Students will upload their final animation to their online portfolio where the class can
watch and critique each other's work
2. Students choose 2 or 3 animations to create a story around. In small groups students
create a story based short animation
