Classroom Improvement Funds Grant

AJM has a unique Business and Innovations program. This program was developed and piloted at
Archbishop Joseph MacNeil including the authoring and implementation of a Career and Technologies
Foundations (CTF) Enterprise & Innovations Curriculum. This curriculum has been viewed and
acknowledged by ECSD CTF Curriculum Consultant John Nedd, Assistant Superintendent, Learning
Services Innovations, Tim Cusak and Alberta Education CTF Team Leader, Dave McCann (January 2017
ERLC). This curriculum has also has been presented at the 2017 ULead Conference.

For the 2017/18 school year, we are seeking financial support for students enrolled in the Junior High
Enterprise and Innovations option program to develop and run a school based business (apparel,
merchandise, and supply store). This initiative is to augment our existing program which provides
authentic, cross-curricular, 21 Century learning for these students and the general school population. The
AJM Mav's Store will be supported by the E & I option course teachers as well as local entrepreneurs from
the Edmonton business community (*including members of our AJM Enterprise and & Innovations
Mentorship Panel). This authentic schoo- based business will provide learning in a multitude of areas
including; business research and development, marketing and advertisement, financial management,
merchandise acquisition & printing and community stewardship. In order to start up our business & create
professional products for this initiative, specific assets are required. We are seeking funding to purchase
the following assets:

1. Sublimation Heat Transfer machine and Epson Stylus Photo Printer C88-CISS

At AJM we have a unique CTF program that fosters entrepreneurship and cross-curricular learning. While
the options program is for grades 7 and 8 students, the entire school community participates in
marketplaces and entrepreneurship activities. This proposal is an initiative to augment our program to
afford students the opportunity to create and engage authentically in the day to day operation of a school
based business. It must also be noted that student benefits outside of the options program could include
projects such as; specialty items printed for elementary student initiatives (art & digital design),
financial/entrepreneurial literacy learning for all students (through presentations and advertisements)
and an opportunity to promote citizenship through “giving back” to the school, to name just a few.

As educators, we have a broad, multi-grade teaching background with additional knowledge and
experience in entrepreneurship. We share a passion for educational programming that provides student
engagement through hands-on, real world experiences. It is our vision to nurture student engagement
through authentic "real world" learning experiences. It is our contention that our Enterprise and
Innovations program provides our young entrepreneurs with the opportunity to not only imagine future
career possibilities but to live them. Our program is at the forefront of education in Alberta. It is aligned
with all aspects of curriculum redesign and the Ministerial Order on Student Learning. The feedback on
our program has been very positive. We believe that part of our vision and responsibility as educators is
to be forward thinking. The next phase for the Enterprise and Innovations program at AJM is to build a
school-based business. With funding support this initiative will not only benefit students at AJM for years
to come but could also serve as a model for other schools in Alberta.
