A very long time ago before men had learnt how to hunt and set traps, all the birds lived
together peacefully in a great forest. The forest supplied all their needs, plentiful supply of nuts,
fruits seeds and berries for the birds to feed on and they had no enemies. The birds came to be
rather wasteful.
The phoenix, an ugly dull brownish grey bird, was a real worrier. She was always telling the
other birds to be careful and to prepare for a time that food might not be so plentiful. The fruit
might stop growing on the trees, or the trees might drop their leaves, or just fall over, even. All
the other birds ignored her useless advice. The phoenix determined to prepare for the worst and
started collecting all the fruits and berries and seeds other birds discarded. She stowed them
away in places like hollow trees, buried them in the ground or underneath the roots. They just
laughed and mocked her.
One day a great storm hit the forest, and what phoenix had been worrying about all these
years came to pass. Leaves and whole branches were blown off the trees and carried far away
by the powerful wind. Some trees were blown over altogether, and with the protection of the
dense foliage now gone, the heat of the sun penetrated the forest and dried everything up!
Suddenly the birds found they had to fight each other for the odd berry or a stray nut. Phoenix
started sharing out all the scraps of food she had stored up all over the forest. Now every single
bird, large and small, wanted to be her friend. Eventually the gods sent some clouds over the
land, which cooled things down a bit, and some rain fell. Green sprouts started to appear again,
just as the food stores phoenix had built up started to run out. Slowly the forest returned to its old
self, and the birds recovered.
But they didn’t forget their new friend, phoenix. To show their gratitude every bird in the
whole forest selected its most beautiful and colorful feather and presented it to phoenix. When
they were finished phoenix had been transformed into the most fantastic and multi colorful creature
in the forest.

JACK JOHNSON
Jack Johnson was one of nine children born to a couple of ex-slaves, and rose from those
humble beginnings to become the first ever African American heavyweight boxing champion of
the world. The young Jack played with white children as a boy in Galveston, Texas, never feeling
discriminated against in those early years. Perhaps this gave him strength and self-belief in the
face of the racism he would encounter later in life.
Johnson spent only a few years in school before taking on a series of manual jobs. He
travelled to New York and then Boston as a 16-year-old, taking on more jobs and engaging in his
first fight – which he won – against an older and bigger longshoreman. Many more fights were to
follow, and Johnson became the ‘Colored Heavyweight Champion of the World’. His attempts to
fight for the World Championship were repeatedly foiled as white opponents refused to fight him.
Finally his efforts paid off when Canadian Tommy Burns was tempted into a fight for an enormous
purse. Johnson won and would reign undefeated for seven years. A succession of ‘Great White
Hopes’ failed to beat Johnson during this time, as White America felt humiliated by this black
champion.
Even out of the ring Johnson refused to conform to the racist beliefs of the time, openly
dating (and marrying) white women, which caused outrage in the eyes of many. Jack was forced
to keep fighting well into his 50s (possibly even his 60s) in order to earn money, as his color
made it hard to make a living any other way. Even his death could be put down to racism, as he
died in a car crash after racing away from a dinner that refused to serve him. However, despite
all his struggles, Jack Johnson remained a symbol of hope, a man who allowed African Americans
to walk taller during a time of extreme prejudice.

Landslides have always existed on our planet. Generally classified as mass movements of rock,
debris, and soil down a slope of land. While landslides are a naturally occurring environmental
hazard they have recently increased in frequency in certain areas due to human activity. Although
there are many different causes of landslides, they all have two things in common. According to
Geoscience Australia’s website at http://www.ga.gov.au “...they are the results of the failure of
the soil and rock materials that make up the hill-slope and they are driven by gravity.
There are three causes of landslides. Earthquakes are seismic activities that have always
been a main cause of landslides throughout the world. Any time plate tectonics move the soil that
covers them moves with it. When earthquakes occur on areas with steep slopes, many times the
soil slips causing landslides. Furthermore, ashen debris flows caused by earthquakes can also
trigger mass movement of soil. When sloped areas become completely saturated by heavy
rainfall many times landslides can occur. Without the aid of mechanical root supports the soil
simply runs off when it contains too much water. Human activities such as clear Cutting: and
mining also contribute to the causes of landslide. Clear cutting is method of timber harvesting
which completely removes all old growth timber from the area. This method is hazardous because
it destroys the existing mechanical root structure in the area. Mining operations that use blasting
techniques often cause other areas that are at the risk of sliding to slide due to vibrations under
the soil.
