4.) Prerequisites:

Students may need experience with painting techniques that can be used to emphasis the positive
message with borders.

5.) Materials:
Sketch books
Worksheet: Basic Calligraphy
Pencils
Pens
Thick paper: maybe poster paper
Or
Canvases (if possible)
Brush Tip Calligraphy Pens
Watercolor paint
Acrylic paint
Paint brushes
Palettes

6.) Safety Hazards:

Just reminder on how to keep our materials nice, including Brush Tip Pens and brushes.
We have a new tool we will be using today. When we use the brush tip pen we can get thin lines
by pressing lightly and thick lines by adding a bit more pressure. We do not press extremely hard
because that can ruin our nice brush tip pens. Anyone who cannot treat our material with respect
will loss that privilege.

7.) Vocabulary:
● Basic calligraphy terms (visually defined): upstroke, downstroke, overturn, underturn,
compound curve, oval, ascending loop, descending loop, comma dot
● Calligraphy: the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush.
It is not cursive!

8.) Interdisciplinary Connections:

Using language art to use descriptive words that bring strong positive message to the reader.
Students will also write a reflection of the process of making their creation.
9.) Artist (at least 3 images)/Other Resources :
Pokras Lampas

Denise Lach

Maxim Ivanov

10.) Lesson Procedure (most important part- be clear!!!!!)

Day 1
Introduction: Calligraphy with powerpoint
1.) Today we will be learning how to do calligraphy. We are going to start with a video.
Today we will be using a brush pen for calligraphy. When using this tool notice the more
pressure you use the thicker the line, less pressure gives you thinner lines. That said we
should not be pushing to hard on the tip, this is a nice tool that we need to take care of.
Anyone misusing the tool will lose the privilege of working with this new tool.
2.) I am handing out a worksheet to get you all started going over the basics of calligraphy.
While going through the practice notice how the tool works.
3.) After a little practice: Now we will be using those basics to write the alphabet.
4.) The rest of the time we will just be exploring the ways we can use this new material
5.) Optional: Maybe also have feather ink pens to explore how to use those as well.
6.) Check for understanding by seeing how the students are doing with the project.
7.) By next class I want you all to consider positive messages you may write. Such as be
awesome today, enjoy the little things etc.

Day 2
1.) Alright. Let us discuss the impact of words. Introduce with this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC-X4eidrOo At your tables share how your words impact
others? Lets have some examples. … Right, so your words have power. They can have a
negative of positive impact on others.
2.) Check out how word art can impact the viewer… Some of these contemporary artist
miniplate the way you see words to the point where they are more a visual composition then
thinking of them as words. Look close to the motion of the letters. Especially Pokras Lampas,
this blue letters seem to draw your eyes right to the middle. Think about graffiti as well or tattoo
art. Think how you may emphasis your phase or quote.
3.) Today we have a visitor from the food bank in our community. (Visitor has a presentation of
the impact of the food bank on their own community.) Think about how you may feel if you
were unsure if you were going to have a meal that night.Could be very difficult to think
positively.
4.) Our goal of our project is to take the skill of calligraphy to spread positive messages while
helping this organization through art making. Your artwork made will be sold in a silent auction
to support their organization.
5.) By the end of this project you will all be able to know how to use the new tool, will create
quality work to be sold, reflect on the whole process.
6.) Today I want you all to sketch some ideas of what you may do and also consider how you
may emphasis the phrase with a border
7.) Any questions?

Day 3
1.) Everyone should have an idea of what they will be creating. Everyone be a part of an in
process critique. Students will be given a sticky note for a positive comment and a sticky
note for a constructive criticism and/or question.
2.) Students will take a look at the critique and have time to ask questions if they are unsure
how to apply that criticism.
3.) Students that are ready will to begin the calligraphy message. I will be coming around
asking each person to explain their idea and use that time to give suggestions if it applies.
I will also be around to help anyone with questions.
4.) Check for understanding by listening, observing, asking and answering questions, and
identifying students who need a little more help.
Day 4
1.) Last work day (unless seems like they need more time)
2.) Students will begin the class, students will have another critique within their table. Table
will give students constructive criticism, ask questions and share positive feedback.
3.) Students will use the rest of the time to ask questions pertaining to the criticism. Next
class we will be finishing this artwork.
4.) Students will use the rest of the class to finish their artwork. Those that are ready, begin
to prepare artwork for the silent auction.
Day 5
Gallery Walk
We will create silent auction cards that include estimated value and the minimum bid. Students
will display the work for the auction. Students will reflect on the process, they will discuss what
they see and highlight them in the discussion.
Also I may ask some general question to the class, like how did your art impact the community,
what went well, is there an artwork that sticks out, why, if anyone would change anything what
would it be and why. At the end of class, students will be given a reflection sheet and it will be
due by the next art class.

11.) Student Artwork Display Blurb

This class has partnered with the community food bank to create artwork to be sold with all the
proceeds going to the food bank. Students have been learning calligraphy and other forms of
beautiful lettering. They have used that skill to create these positive messages ready to be hung
in someone's house.

12.) Assessment/Evaluation (your assessment must match your objectives!)

Formative:
Student Sketchbook – Students record in a journal their understanding of the topic, concept or
lesson taught. The teacher reviews the entry to see if the student has gained an understanding of
the topic, lesson or concept that was taught.

Gallery Walks - Students will display their artwork, ready to be sold. Students will then have
sticky notes and are to comments to works ( more than just good job). Then discuss what they
see and highlight them in the discussion.

Summative:
Reflective Artist Statements with Teacher Evaluation-
Students will fill out a questionnaire, with questions like: What went well?, What didn’t go well?
What parts are you proud of?, What would you change if done again? What was Special about
today’s activity? How did you make a difference? What new things have you discovered about
yourself through this experience?
