Courses
Generally modules and the taught component make up 50% of the course content,
and the group and individual projects make up the other 50%.

All the courses below are offered part-time, except Safety and Human Factors in Aviation,
which is available both full- and part-time.

Airworthiness (accredited – see page 9) MSc/PgDip/PgCert

Airworthiness is at the forefront of aviation development. It is vital that staff have sufficient
knowledge and skill to apply principles in design, manufacture, operation and maintenance
of aircraft to both develop and maintain airworthiness. This part-time course has been
developed to meet industry demand for qualified airworthiness specialists.

Safety and Accident Investigation – Air Transport MSc/PgDip/PgCert

This part-time programme is designed specifically for aircraft accident investigators and
others working in related fields such as government agencies, manufacturers, operators,
infrastructure providers and safety regulators. It provides an internationally-recognised
academic qualification in safety and accident investigation.

Safety and Accident Investigation – Marine Transport PgCert

Developed in close collaboration with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB),
this part-time programme offers a unique combination of research-based study and
learning from real-world experiences, ensuring that students gain the skills and knowledge
from the best of both academia and industry.

Safety and Accident Investigation – Rail Transport PgCert

This part-time programme was designed by rail safety professionals. It provides
participants with the knowledge and skills to conduct a rail accident investigation in
accordance with the standards and recommended practices as required under the
appropriate national and European legislation.

Safety and Human Factors in Aviation (accredited – see page 9) MSc/PgDip/PgCert

Safety critical systems require high human performance, in combination with engineering
excellence. This unique programme synthesises the examination of human factors with
the study of safety and safety assessment, creating a powerful combination that adds
significant value in aviation and other safety-critical contexts.

Academic staff
You will be taught by a wide range of subject specialists at Cranfield
and from industry, who draw on their research and industrial expertise
to provide stimulating and relevant input to your learning experience.

Professor Graham Braithwaite, Director of Transport Systems

Graham Braithwaite is Professor of Safety and Accident Investigation. He joined
Cranfield in 2003 and established new multimodal investigation courses in 2004
and the world’s first MSc programme for professional accident investigators a year
later. Graham is frequently called upon to speak at industry conferences and by
the news media. He also serves as the Independent Safety Advisor to the Board of
British Airways.

Dr Simon Place, Senior Lecturer

After a career as an RAF Engineer Officer, Simon studied for a master’s degree
in Flight Dynamics here at Cranfield University. After four years in engineering
consultancy in the rail industry, Simon, a Chartered Engineer and Member of the
Institute of Mechanical Engineers, is now Programme Director for the Safety and
Accident Investigation programme, responsible for modules in Airworthiness, Safety
Assessment of Aircraft Systems and Practical Reliability.

Cengiz Turkoglu, Senior Lecturer

Cengiz is an experienced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and former Quality Engineer
for SR Technics UK Ltd. He has worked in various airlines in both Turkey and the
UK. He held aircraft maintenance licenses from Turkish, USA and UK Authorities. He
has audited the quality and safety management systems of over twenty different
airlines in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe. He is the Course Director for the
Airworthiness MSc.

Saryani Asmayawati, Lecturer

Yani is the Course Director for our Safety and Accident Investigation programme.
She is involved in the design and delivery of various components of accident
investigation short courses and MSc modules, with particular focus on investigation
simulation exercises and cabin safety workshops. She began her career as an Air
Safety Investigator at the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee and
works closely with investigators from around the world.

Dr Jim Nixon, Lecturer

Jim is a chartered psychologist and lectures in human factors in aviation safety. He
is the Course Director for the Safety and Human Factors MSc programme and leads
on modules in Cognitive Ergonomics and Research Methods. Prior to coming to
Cranfield, Jim was a Principal Human Factors Engineer at BAE Systems Advanced
Technology Centre, applying human factors in a defence context, and a Human
Factors Specialist at NATS (formerly the National Air Traffic Services).
