Teaching/Instructional Practice
Anticipatory Set: “You guys have been working very hard for very long on your OWN
books. Now that you are almost finished, how many of you would like to actually read
EACH OTHER’S books or have someone else read YOUR book?”

As the students have only been working on their own books, they will be very excited to read
other students’ work. I will then explain to them that they have to get it 100% ready for their
reader by checking it for mistakes.
Process: teacher centered student centered

1.) I will bring out the example/demo book that I made. It will be a nonfiction book
about Cars. It will have a few mistakes in it. I will tell the students that I need their
help making sure my book is ready for my readers.
2.) I will read the book aloud and ask the students to give me a “stop sign” motioned
with their hands when I came across a confusing part or spelling mistake.
3.) I will read slowly and dramatically, pointing to each word as I read it for emphasis.
At spelling mistakes or grammatical errors (such as leaving out punctuation at the
end of a sentence), I will make a show of getting stuck.
4.) I will revise the mistakes in front of the students, adding punctuation, correcting
spelling, etc.
5.) I will then bring out the “Ways to Spell Words” chart and explain how to use each
method on the chart. I will use the methods along with the example book,
demonstrating how to use them.
6.) I will then distribute a copy of the chart to each student. Students will go back to
their desks and work independently on revising their books.
7.) Students can work with their “writing partners” if needed.

**Steps 1-5 are teacher centered. Steps 6-7 are student centered.

Closing: How will you know that your students have met the learning target?

During the time in which the students work independently on their writing, I will choose
one student at a time to conference with separately. I will check to see if they have
effectively and successfully revised their work using the strategies I taught them. We will
read their writing aloud and focus on finding any mistakes or confusing parts. If there is
convincing evidence that the students have successfully revised their work, I will know they
have met the learning targets.
