SENIOR PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION

Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete and
descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team and your teacher a clear
picture of what you accomplished in your project.

Name - Jackie Garcia Project Start Date – January 30, 2019

Title of Project - Hair We Go Again: Organic Alternatives to Clean Oceanic Oil Spills

Project Completion Date - March 27, 2019

1. In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was the
impact of your project? Be specific.
My project is helping a part of the community by educating and influencing the beliefs of the future
generations about how important the health of the ocean is, by bringing attention to how oil spills
are being cleaned up currently compared to the cleaner and safer alternatives that could be used.

2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you? Be
honest. If it was not really a stretch for you, explain why you chose not to take the opportunity to
challenge yourself.
This project was a challenge for me, because I’ve never made and taught a lesson plan to a
large group of strangers. Also because they are middles schoolers, they have a tendency to
speak their minds which includes all opinions that they may have towards my lesson. It was
more anxiousness and the fear of public speaking that made my project a hurdle. I also have
never made a full lesson plan with a lab. My project included many new experiences for me
and gave me a better understanding of what teachers have to do for their profession from day
to day.

3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you
learned/enhanced during your project. If you cannot think of 5-8, just list and describe what you
can.

● Construct a experiment
○ I made a interactive science experimental lab that allowed students to first hand

understand how organic alternatives work.

● Donation management

○ I contacted a few organizations that specializes in accepting donations for oil

clean up.

● Public speaking

○ I presented my senior project topic to an inclusion class of sixth grades

● Teaching

○ I taught a sixth grade class the importance of preserving our oceans and how

there are better ways to clean up mass oil spills with organic solutions that won’t

harm it further

● Constructing lesson plans

○ I made a lesson plan along with a lab and a worksheet to document the students

findings from the lab, as well as lab procedures and step-by-step instructions.

● Time Management

○ I had to manage my time wisely in order to have everything done beforehand of

my project date.

4. List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each. If you cannot think of 4-8, just list and describe what you can. If
you did not solve the problem, then tell why.
● Communication with schools
○ It took roughly a month for a school to agree to let me teach at their school.
● Constructing a lab
○ I did not know how to make a lab, or what to incorporate into it so it wouldn’t be
boring or too short.
● Communication with an organization to accept hair donations
○ The original organization last minute decided not to let me donate to them
● People willing to donate hair
○ I asked mostly family to donate hair to me, but it took a lot of convincing

5. List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given.
● My parents
○ they supported and did everything in their power to help me through my project
● Mrs. V
○ guided me through the whole project making process from start to finish
● Mrs. Grimes
○ Helped me create lab and worksheet, as well as what SOL topics to incorporate into my
presentation
● Antonio Velazquez
○ supported me from the writing of my paper to the completion to my project
● Mrs. Krebs
○ allowed me to teach one of her classes for my project

6. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal.
I originally wanted to teach at multiple schools about my topic as well as have a large donation of hair
to give to my organization. But as I started getting more realistic and based on the circumstances of no
schools answering my emails or calls, it would be best for me to stick to one school and focus solely
on them.

7. If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from
experience?
I would’ve liked to have each group of students conduct each individual lab, so they would be able to
see immediate results. But due to a lack of materials and time, I couldn’t make it happen. But if i were
given the opportunity in the future, I would make sure that each group could test each alternative.
8. Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself? What did you get out of the experience
in terms of personal growth?
I learned that I am not that bad of a public speaker as I thought. I also rediscovered my aspiration for
teaching. I learned from my project that I am capable of

9. Reflecting on the total amount of time and effort that you put into this opportunity, and reflecting
on the overall quality of the final product, what grade would you give yourself on the project? Be
honest with yourself! Justify the evaluation of your grade in at least 25 words.

Grade: B+

Justification: I would give myself a B+, because all I did was teach a class and donate some hair. I feel
like I didn’t make as big of an impact as I would like, let alone a significant impact in general. But although
my impact wasn’t large, I’m proud that I had the opportunity to teach a class. There was also countless
hours that I put into organizing and orchestrating my project into a reality. I felt like I succeeded in doing
my project when all the kids were so intrigued with the lesson and the lab. They all asked so many questions
on how and why everything works, and why poor things were happening to the ocean that they were
completely unaware of. So although my project wasn’t a large event or a panel of professionals, I believe
that the smallest impact is just the ripple effect for an even bigger wave, and I couldn't be any prouder of
what I’ve accomplished.
