Review of Theatrical Performance
On April 8, 2019, I went on a field trip with my field placement to watch a play at the
Honolulu Theatre for Youth located near the intersection of Richards St and Beretania St, 229
Queen Emma Square, Honolulu. I didn’t pay for anything for attending that day. However, I
spent nine dollars to go again with my classmates in college which was scheduled for April 27.
The first trip I went with my field class, I was one of the volunteers who helped during the
journey to keep the students safe and to help manage their behavior during the trip. The name of
the play is The Adventures of Pinocchio; The story is about an annoying puppet and his father.
The puppet-maker Geppetto's creations come magically to life; this puppet Pinocchio dreams
that he will be a real boy one day. One of the play goals is to act responsibly and teach everyone
a powerful lesson about truth and lies, and how powerful love can be in our lives. I noticed this
play involves so many performing art elements, we learned during this semester, where actors
used a lot of creative movement during the musical and dance performance. Each person has a
part in the play to perform using all kind of materials to present the play in a professional
manner, where they used a rain stick and wood blocks among other materials. These materials
are useful to teach students the concept of rhythm in a song, by listening to music and playing
instruments to represent actions. The connection I can make between this play and what I learned
in this class is, I observed some of the musical concepts like high and low, loud and soft, fast and
slow, and beat and rhythm using instruments to demonstrate that. As a member of the audience, I
clapped and praised the performers. Also, I was checking the student's reaction when they were
clapping with the performers during the play. Observing the changing of the light, music tone,
and how sometimes they were performing at a fast pace and other times at a slow pace. It was a
lovely play to watch, and I enjoyed it very much.
