in mind when making his decisions as a Grand Knight, member of the 4th Degree Honor Guard, or as our Building Manager. May he rest in
Peace!
As you know each year the Grand Knight selects a Knight of year and a Family of the year. This year I am requesting the members
input. Please send your recommendations /reasons for candidates of these prestigious awards to either James Kaan or myself at
jkaan76@gmail.com or jeterlecki@optonline.net .
While we should always keep the health and well-being of our brothers and sisters in mind, let us all make an effort to call fellow
members we haven’t seen or heard from for a while or pay them visit. It will make a difference to them and yourself as well.
In closing my eleventh memo from the Grand Knights desk, as always, it is my continued hope that we reach out to the parishes we
support and provide the services and people whenever and wherever we are needed.
Vivat Jesus!

Faith Reflection
By SK James Ryan, Family Director
Periodically Fr. Bill Hanson of Mary Immaculate church poses a ‘thinking question’ at the beginning of Mass and we take a few minutes to
share with each other. Several months ago, he asked, “What is your favorite part of the Mass?”.
I instantly knew what it was. It is when we take a moment and say, “Peace be with you”. Age does not matter, social status does not
matter, whether I know them personally does not matter. We are connected at that part of Mass with a warm smile and gentle handshake.
We are friends for those few moments although we may not have a conversation beyond this exchange.
I especially enjoy reaching out to someone who is sitting alone or comes every week but does not really appear to interact with anyone, but
they are a ‘regular’ at my Mass. As an Usher you see them come and go each week. I like to make them feel Welcome and included.
I am always happy to see that person appear to soften when they enter church knowing I am going to say hello and get a warm smile in
return. What a powerful connector, this phrase of four words.
By this simple exchange I feel more connected to those within my faith family. Brothers All, Peace be with you!

JIM:
My Brothers and Sister,
When I first joined Patchogue Council in 2005, I didn’t really know many of the
members and like many others, I came to my first meeting not really knowing what to
expect. I figured I would just sit quietly and observe. You know, scope things out a bit
before I jumped in, watch and see who was who. I took a seat and I very quickly began to
see that the guy sitting in the big chair opposite me was a man who was very involved.
He seemed to have a say in everything that was going on. He had a gravelly voice and
spoke very loudly, and everyone seemed to listen to him when he spoke. His name was
Jim Addie, and he was the Warden of the Council.
It didn’t take very long to discover that Jim was a man who was well respected among
the members and for good reason. He was loud and boisterous, gruff in his manner, but
there was no beating around the bush with him, he said what was on his mind and I liked that. I could tell right away that
behind the rough exterior was a man with a huge heart who would do anything for you if you needed it.
Before too long I was asked to become the Treasurer of the Monseigneur Corporation, the business side of the Council
who legally owned and operated the building. The Council was new to the building and we were just trying to get things
going. We were moving along slowly, but when the Business Manager stepped down, it was Jim who stepped up. He and I
worked closely together, booking parties and working the bar. We spent a lot of time at the Council. Those were the days
when no one was getting paid, so there was not a lot of interest among the members to give up their free time to work at
the Hall. We sat in the Office and talked a lot. It was Jim who told me, he didn’t ask or suggest, but told me that I had to
take my Fourth Degree and as soon as I did, in the same way he told me I needed to join the Honor Guard.
Jim and I would go to the Fourth Degree Meetings together and we would also go to Honor Guard Callouts together,
sometimes accompanied by our Brother and friend Pete Fournier. We had a lot of laughs and a couple of sad moments
too, when we were at the Wake Service for one of our fellow Knights.
Jim and I also served our Council together. I became Chancellor when he was Deputy Grand Knight. We didn’t always agree
on things, but we always put forward a united front. I was proud to serve as DGK when Jim was our Grand Knight. We were
doing our best to sort of reshape the Council and move it towards a slightly different direction, and we did. More than
once one of us would leave the Council after a particularly frustrating Meeting upset, and one of us would call the other on
the cell phone before we even got home in the car and talk each other off the ledge. We would say, as soon as the other
picked up the phone “are you over it yet?” and then we’d laugh about it. Those were good times.
After I served a GK, and became a DD, I wasn’t involved in the day to day goings on at the Council, but Jim and I would still
talk. He became more involved in the Business end, and I on the District and State end. So we talked less and less and I
regret that.
Jim passed away on March 31st. Our Council has had some big losses over the years. Members who were very active who
have passed on and the loss of every member, every Brother Knight, is felt by us, without question. But each loss touches
us all differently. Jim’s passing wasn’t totally unexpected. He had been sick for a long time, and was always in and out of
the hospital. So much so that I guess that I always just took it for granted that he would recover and I’d see him down at
the Council again, yelling at me about something. But God had other plans. I guess He figured that enough was enough. I
don’t know. Jim was my friend, my mentor, my Brother Knight, my Grand Knight. I loved him, I’m going to miss him, and I’ll
never forget him. Keep it Bright for Liberty’s Sake my Friend. Farewell.
