has consistently demonstrated
a decrease in fertility and birth
rates among women in their
teens and twenties. Despite the
statistics, pregnancy among
women in their twenties is still
evident.

Institute for Women’s Policy

Research (IWPR) in 2012,
suggests that student parents
make up 26 percent of the total
undergraduate student body in
the United States. According to
IWPR, the number of student
parents in the United States has
escalated by 1.1 million or 30
percent.
Alexyss Powell, 21-year-old
Interdisciplinary studies major
at Radford University, gave birth
to a boy on Feb. 24, 2019, during
her senior year. Upon finding out
that she was expecting, Powell
was filled with shock.

thought I’d be in such a
predicament, but it quickly
turned into happiness,” said
Powell.

Business Management major at
New River Community College,
brought life into the world, Aug.
“At the moment
I’m not working,
but I will be going
back soon. I can’t
imagine juggling
work, class, and
caring for [my
son], but it must
be done,” said
Alexyss Powell
27, 2018. Jones expressed the
mixed emotions she faced after
finding out she was pregnant.
“I was very excited and
nervous when I found out I was
pregnant,” said Jones.
The average United States
college student balances school,
a job, and extracurricular
activities. In addition to
attending college, a growing
number of students have the
responsibility of being a parent.
Powell said, “At the moment
I’m not working, but I will be
going back soon. I can’t imagine
juggling work, class, and caring
for [my son], but it must be
done.”
While becoming acquainted
with motherhood, Jones had
a different experience. Jones
said, “I did not work until my
son was three months [old]. I
had the opportunity to really
bond with my son before getting
back to my everyday life. Once I
got back to work and classes, it
was extremely different having
a child.” Jones continued,
“However, it didn’t take long to
learn how to manage my time
efficiently.”
According to IWPR, in 2011,
mothers in the Great Lakes and
Southeast regions, Virginia
included, are more likely to be
raising children on their own.
IWPR stated that 62 percent
of mothers in college in the
Southeast region, are single.
IWPR’s research suggests
that student parents, especially
those who are single, have low
rates of completing college, in
comparison to students that are
not parents.
Despite Powell’s busy day and
uncertain schedule, life becomes
slightly more manageable due to
the help of her professors.
Powell said, “Thankfully with
my professors being so flexible,
managing class hasn’t been too
bad. All of my professors during

have been so helpful. They even
allow him to come to class with
me, as needed.”
Jones’ pregnancy drained
her of her energy, and noticed a
slight decline in her performance
at school. To accommodate
her busy schedule, Jones, has
reduced the number of credit
hours she’s taking. Jones is
hopeful that she will be able
to manage being a full-time
student once she is ready.
Jones said, “I have only
taken 1-2 classes at a time, so it
hasn’t been difficult, but when I
get back to being full time, I’m
hoping it won’t be that much of
a difference.”
As these two students
continue to excel in motherhood
and school, they advise women
in similar positions to, as Jones
said “[…] stay positive every step
of the way. There will be times,

the beef burrito which
was, unfortunately, the
opposite of the experience
of the first meal. The beef

even to try to finish, so I
left it not wanting to take
it home for leftovers. The
cheese sauce was ok but
way too watery.
My only other
complaints were that the
overhead music was a
little loud when trying to
have a conversation and
that the plates were a
little small for the fajita
taco salad.
Overall, despite some
of the disappointment in
my side order, the cheese
sauce, plus my other
minor complains, the
main meal was excellent
and I enjoyed the design
and decoration of the
restaurant.
The owner was
friendly, and the place
was tidy. The prices were
a bit lower than other
Mexican restaurants
around depending on
what you get, and they
have daily specials on
food and drinks.
If I came back, I
would stick to the main
lunch items and would be
curious to try their drinks.

e know the state of
your mind can have
physical effects on
your body. For example, when
you get nervous, your stomach
may feel sick. However, the
effects your body can have
on your mind seem to be less
common knowledge.
You may have heard of
runner’s high, which is a high-

Dalia Shaheen, senior fashion
design major said, “I’m a part-

projects I have to work on, and

it hard to completely focus on
academic performance.”

which means you’re either able to use

other coupons. The discount page will
tell you if it’s stackable or not. I’ve used
UNiDAYS countless times, and it’s never
let me down.
I shop at ASOS a lot, and if you’re
looking for a steal, for only $19 you can
get 2-day shipping for a whole year.
Amazon Prime, for students the
discount is real. For anyone else prime
is $12.99 a month but for students,
it’s discounted to $6.49. That includes

If anything, as a last resort, if you
can’t find a discount for a store or
product you want, Google it. Google is
your best friend and will never steer you

This is all the tips I have on student
discounts and discounts in general; I
find discount searching fun, it’s a thrill
to fill your shopping cart with items you
want, to enter a little code and see the
price drop.
As an avid shopper, apps like

more time on their phones
than they should be spending.
Some of us have become so attached to
our phones to the point that it would
be uncomfortable walking on campus,
going out with our friends, or sitting
with our families without having our
phones on hand.
The Tartan interviewed several
Radford University students about how
much time they spend on their phones
and if they think they’re obsessed with
their phones.
Shenna Donny, a Radford University
freshman, said, “I usually spend about
five hours a day on my phone between
Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. I
mean, I would like to reduce the amount
I spend on social media and use that
time for useful activities, but it’s really
hard to control.”
Donny believes students are
attached to their phones stating, “[...]
We definitely can rely less on our phones
as we spend too much time attached
to our phones just browsing different
social media apps that cause nothing but
anxiety.”
Our phones can be a significant cause
for anxiety and depression, due to the
social media attract more anxious users,
but the University of Chicago found that
it’s also “more addictive” than cigarettes,
and harder to abstain from than a
cocktail might be. However, its not going
to give you emphysema or liver disease,
so perhaps folks are less likely to forgo
that fix.”
Angie Tasneem, Radford University
junior, says “I can’t tell how much I
spend on my phone, because, I check my
phone literally every 10 minutes, that’s
almost like all day.”
Despite all the negativities that
social media can cause, social media is
not always a bad influence. We can take
advantage of having accessibility to so
many platforms, and it connects us with
the world.
You can also grow a business just
by having Facebook and Instagram, and
even if you’re following health, fashion,
career, life influencers, you can learn
and gain much experience from them.
Nihal Rashdan, a Radford
international student from India, said,
“I only use social media to keep up with
whatever my siblings and my cousins
post on Instagram. This is how we know
how our days go.”
Rashdan continued, “I can’t afford

Women’s Tennis Takes on Top Seed

he final few days before
the weekend proved a
sight to see for Radford
Women’s Tennis. The team was
set to host the Big South 2019
championship on their home
turf, bringing the ferocity with
them to the courts.
The Highlanders began the
tournament in the quarterfinals
going up against Gardner-
Webb, ranked #3 in the Big
South. Radford came in ranked
at #6, blowing away any
misconceptions that may have
been present.
Match One
The match took place on
Wednesday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
at the Radford Tennis Complex.
The Highlanders came out
strong in doubles, clinching the
point with two paired victories.
Malin Falk, a freshman from
Sweden, and Katey Fruehauf,
a freshman from Milton, GA,
stormed the court with a 6-1
victory. The duo blazed through
yet another rivaling doubles
match up.

pril 13, the Radford
University Women’s
Track Team traveled
to Columbia, SC, as they
participated in the Gamecock
Invitational at the University
of South Carolina. The team
produced an impressive

a sophomore from Abingdon,
VA, clinched the doubles point
with a 7-5 win. Coming out from
doubles, Radford held a 1-0 lead
over Gardner-Webb.
Heading straight to singles,
Blalock carried her rhythm with
her. She continued her strong
play and came up with a 6-3, 6-0
victory on court 4.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs were
quick to tie the score, picking
up two victories on courts 5 and
6. Anastasia Belyaeva, a junior
from Russia, battled hard on the
court and gave Radford a 3-2
lead. She bounced back in the
final two sets and defeated her
opponent 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Falk returned to court 3
and gave the Highlanders the
match-winning point. She won
6-1, 4-6, 7-5, pushing Radford
onto the semifinals to take on
UNC Asheville. Radford defeated
Gardner-Webb 4-2, providing
confidence for the team as they
went on in the tournament.
Match Two
The next day, Radford
Women’s tennis took on UNC
Asheville, #7 rank in Big
South, April 18 at 3 p.m. in the
Radford tennis complex. The
performance overall, but a
particular Highlander went on
to have a memorable day.
Junior La’Tisha Chambers
exhibited a remarkable
performance on the Sheila
and Morris Cregger Track as
she set a new school record in
the 100-meter dash recording
a remarkable time of 11.78
seconds. This destroys the
Highlanders came out strong,
blowing through doubles.
Dzeubou and Blalock took a
quick 6-2 win on court 1 while
Falk and Fruehauf won 6-3 on
court 2. The two pairs gave
Radford a 1-0 lead heading into
singles.
The Highlanders kept on
with their lead as Fruehauf
provided a 7-5, 6-4 victory on
court 6. She pushed Radford to
a 2-0 lead over UNC Asheville.
Though they were quick to reply,
cutting the deficit to half with a
win on court 1.
Dzeubou came back to the
court and provided a bit of space
for the Highlanders. She bested
her opponent 6-3, 7-5 on court
2. Finishing out the match and
pushing Radford to the Big South
championship finals, Blalock
stormed the court. She battled
hard in three sets and came
up with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory
on court 4. Radford Women’s
Tennis defeated UNC Asheville
4-1, going up against top-seeded
team Winthrop in the finals.
The Final Match
Traveling to Blacksburg on
Friday, April 19 to compete in
the Burrows-Burleson indoor
tennis center, Radford was up
previous Highlander record that
Amelia Reynolds set last season
in the 100-meter dash with a
time of 11.87. Chambers and her
lightning-fast 100-meter dash
time currently sits as the third
fastest in the entire Big South
Conference.
The intelligent Covington,
VA native, also shines when she
isn’t on track as well. Chambers
for a challenge. The Winthrop
Eagles were #1 ranked in the Big
South, and have had a strong
tennis program for years.
Though the Highlanders
were bested by the Eagles 0-4,
this was only the second time
the team had made it to the
Big South Championship final
in program history. The team
battled until the end and made
history for the university.
Starting strong in doubles,
Dzeubou and Blalock took the
court. The duo won 6-2, besting
Winthrop’s top-rated doubles
duo. Unfortunately, this would be
the only victory Radford would
see in the match. Winthrop took
the doubles point and didn’t
look back from there. The Eagles
dominated in singles as well, not
going past the second set in any
match.

Though the season may
be over for Radford Women’s
Tennis, it proved to be a

successful one. The Highlanders
hold a 14-9 overall record, 10-3
of that defending their home
turf. It was a hard fought season,
proving to be exciting for anyone
that attended. The
Tartan
was recently inducted into Phi
Kappa Phi, which is the nation’s
oldest, largest, and selective
honor society for all academic
disciplines. Membership to this
organization is very prestigious
as only the top 7 percent of
juniors in their class are selected
for nomination.

Chambers has been
continuing to display her
outstanding athletic abilities
on the track all season. Earlier
this season Jan. 26, at the
Virginia Military Institute team
challenge in Lexington, VA, she
cracked a previous Highlander
record in the 60-meter dash. She
went on to produce a time of
7.65 seconds. During this meet,
La’tisha continued to shine
as she placed fourth out of 39
participants in the 200-meter
dash.

he Radford Women’s
Tennis team tallied four
Big South Postseason
Honors as Anastasia Belyaeva,
Drousile Dzeubou and Malin
Falk made it onto all-conference
rosters. Furthermore, Tyler
Blalock, the sophomore from
Abingdon, VA, earned the all-
academic honors.
In Belyaeva’s first season as
a Highlander, she notched a First
Team All-Conference Singles
award. Just behind her, Dzeubou
and Falk made it onto the Second
All-Conference Singles team.
Belyaeva, a native of
Khabarovsk, Russia, had an
impressive season with Radford,
after transferring from the
University of Texas Rio Grande
Valley. She recorded a 13-7
record with twelve of her
matches being placed in the
number one overall flight.
Belyaeva came out victorious
in four of her matches against
number one ranked opponents
within the Big South. She carried
a five-match win streak into
the Big South Championship
Tournament.
During her career at UTRGV,
she made all-Western Athletic
Conference First Team in
both singles and doubles. The
Junior also helped to guide her
teammates to 2018 WAC regular-
season championship.
Dzeubou, having been named
First Team All-Conference in
