Reaction paper on the movie “Inconvenient Truth”

For the past decade and currently this 21st century our planet experienced
unprecedented phenomenons such as strong and killer typhoons and severe droughts
that killed millions of people and shattered personal and real properties all throughout the
globe, among the well-known catastrophes recorded are typhoons Hurricane Katrina
which happened on August 2005 and lasted for eight days, with strong winds of 175mph.
It is one of the most deadly natural disaster in United States history. Katrina killed 1,833
people and destroyed worth 108 billion US dollars of properties and Typhoon Haiyan
(Yolanda) happened on November 2013 in the Philippines and is believed to be the
strongest typhoon ever recorded to make landfall, with strong winds of 195mph.
Haiyan/Yolanda killed 11,801 people and destroyed worth 686 million US dollars of
properties. Also severe droughts like the 2010 to 2011 China Drought that began late 2010
and it was considered as the worst drought to hit the country in 60 years. The drought
affected 35 million people and damages worth 2.3 billion US dollars and the 2012 to 2013
North American drought which affected most parts of the United States, parts of Mexico
and Central Canada. The drought cost more than 35 billion US dollars.

These catastrophes were peculiar due to the magnitude of their damage and
effects. It is believed that these phenomenons will continue to wreak havoc as long as the
citizens of these planet will not be responsible enough to be mindful of are the reasons
why these calamities are constantly occurring. The severity of these calamities are well
recorded, history itself is replete of proof that not only in this 20th century but also during
19th century that the same are already causing damaged to our beloved planet. But the
question is, what is the reason why these calamities are occurring? What are its causes?
Can it be prevented? Is God’s second coming near? Or God is just punishing his people
for the sins committed without repentance. In the Biblical standpoint, yes, these are signs
that Jesus second coming is fast approaching. The scriptures tells us that the calamities
and phenomenons are part of the cleansing process which signals that the second coming
of Jesus Christ is near.
 However, science has a different explantion why these phenomenons happened
and wreaking havoc to our beloved planet. One of the most well-known reason is “ Global
Warming”. Global Warming means that the global temperature has increased. It occurs
when carbon dioxide and other air pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the
atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth
surface. The causes of Global warming are burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, natural gas
for energy and also burning forest to create plantations and establishments and among
others.

The world leaders are already mindful of this Global warming, in fact, several
treaties were already ratified to effect changes on how the countries handle the
greenhouse gas emissions. The most well-known treaty was Kyoto Protocol adopted in
Kyoto, Japan on December 1997 which aims to control greenhouse gas emissions.

However, despite the remarkable awareness that the environmental organizations

are extending to different sectors and countries all over the world, it seems that the effect
of global warming is unstoppable. The task of educating the people all over the world of
the danger of Global warming and its effects in our planet appears to be an
unsurmountable challenge but there is still a glimmer of hope since there are individuals
who break barriers just to deliver a strong message about how our future will look like if
we will continue to ignore the sad reality about Global warming. One of the most famous
personalities who gave his message about the effects of Global warming was former
United States Vice-President Al Gore in his documentary film “Inconvenient truth”. This
was Vice-President Al Gore’s campaign to educate people about global warming. The film
has been credited for raising international public awareness of global warming.

In this film, it shows Al Gore’s massive dedication in protecting this planet. There
were several factors that inspired his interest in the issue, to the point that he ran for United
States Presidency in 2001 just to raise the level of awareness of how people will treat this
significant issue but he lost to eventual President George W. Bush. If only had Vice-
President Al Gore won the election, I believe, he would be a game changer on this issue.
He would pursue reforms in the international arena to significantly reduce the greenhouse
gas emissions and raise awareness. The United States being the widely recognized
hegemon during that time, an Al Gore presidency would perhaps made a difference on
how the countries handle this issue.

Nonetheless, it didn’t stop Vice-President Al Gore on his advocacy to educate

people about Global Warming. Even if he lost his bid for Presidency, this documentary film
“ Inconvenient Truth” still was a significant piece of raising awareness since the film was
used by different schools around the world to educate the young generation about the
causes of Global warming and on how to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon on our
planet.

In this film, Vice-President Al Gore’s presentation was replete of facts with detailed
graphs, flow charts and visuals which shows that the level of greenhouse gases had
significantly increased throughout the years. There were evidences he presented that sea
level are increasing rapidly and the Polar ice caps at the North and South Pole are melting.
These phenomenons are evident proofs that indeed we are currently experiencing global
warming, Vice-President Al Gore presentations shows that due to the increased
temperature in the oceans coupled with the increasing sea levels these create powerful
and strong typhoons and tornados that will reign terror on our planet. However, there are
still a lot of critics that debunked this existence of Global warming. These critics intended
to refute that the global warming is unproven and the warming is insignificant
