Scripture: Psalm 67; John 14: 23-29

Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your
heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. This is the first
and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You must
love your neighbor as you love yourself.” -Matthew 22:37-39

When I first preached at Hill, back in September of last year, I shared with the
congregation my “desert island Bible passage.” An idea coming from Rev. Dr.
Karoline Lewis which she shared at the Young Clergy Women International
Annual Conference last summer, one’s desert island verse, passage, or story is the
one which is the foundation of our faith. Mine, as listed above, is when Jesus tells
us the greatest commandments: love God, love others, love ourselves.

Love. That’s my theology; that’s me in a nutshell. God loves us so much,

Genesis tells us, that we were created in God’s own image. God loves us so
much, the writer of the Gospel of John tells us, that “he gave his only son” so that
we might inherit eternal life. God loves us so much, the author of 1 John tells us,
and because of this love, we must love one another.

I hope, in the six months that I’ve been at Hill so far, you’ve felt how much I love
you. I hope that this foundation of my faith has been exhibited in my words and
actions. I pray, deeply, that this has been the case.

And now, it’s your turn. This spring, I’m asking you to share with me your desert
island verses. What stories, phrases, or passages form the foundation of your
faith? What seems to be your go-to text? Perhaps it is a verse you memorized as
a child, or one which was read at a special event in your life. What is it about this
verse/passage that is so meaningful to you? How do you use this text as
inspiration in your life?

Soon you will have an opportunity to submit your desert island verses, and I will
use these verses which are most important to you as the basis for my preaching
this summer. Even while we remain in Butler, we will travel to the beach together
to dig deeper into God’s Word and grow in our own faith.

I encourage you, in the next few weeks, to be thinking of that special passage of
Scripture. And start packing your bag – the island awaits!

Peace-
Pastor Leigh

To the Members and Friends of Hill Church,

A short synapsis of what has happened to me.

I started out on a 38 day cruise around the southern part of Australia, then to the New Caledonia
Islands in the south seas. The last part was New Zealand. At the beginning of my trip to New
Zealand, cellulitis reared its ugly head. I spent 59 days in a New Zealand hospital and then 5 days at
Penn Medical Center and I’m now in a rehab facility.

I just want to give a huge thank you for all the prayers and good thoughts. When I return to church I
will not be able to thank you all because I will be too emotional.

I would like to express some thoughts about prayer. There were many nights when I could not sleep.
Instead of tossing and turning I would go through my prayer list which seems to get longer by the
day. Like a miracle my pain would subside and I would sleep worry free.

There were also times when I was afraid or emotional and I asked God to surround me by the
prayers that had been offered for me. It helped me to relax and control my emotions and get me
through whatever procedure I was facing.

If you ever wonder if your prayers make a difference I am an example of they do make a difference.

With grateful thanks,

Carolyn Street

As in past years, our Layette Sundays are in May. This

year the dates are May 12th and 19th. We will have our
baby crib set up in the Overflow area of the Church near
the Adult Library for all the beautiful baby clothing,
blankets, quilts, etc. Many of you enjoy knitting and
crocheting caps, sweaters, etc. and others enjoy shopping.
Your generosity is always appreciated. On behalf of
Presbyterian Women, Bea Welch - Moderator.
Calling all musicians! There's a sign up sheet on the bulletin
board across from the adult library for summer music sign ups. It
can be any sort of musical offering to God - singing, playing an
instrument, dance, poetry/dramatic reading, etc. Please consider
picking a Sunday to share your talent with your Church family!

Community Family Game Night - We’ll be joining our fellow

Presbyterians for an evening of fellowship, board games and
fun on Friday, May 3, at Faith Presbyterian Church. All ages
are invited. We’ll gather at 6:30 pm in Faith’s Fellowship
Hall. Bring some friends, a snack or dessert to share, and some
of your favorite games. We promise you won’t be “board!”
