SERVING OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY
The World Federation is a global umbrella body who exist to to serve our global community.
During 2018/19, we have been strengthening our relationships around the world.
PRESIDENT’S VISITS
Our President, Anwarali Dharamsi, has visited many of our jamaats in the last year, including
Karachi, Toronto, London, Mombasa, Mumbai, and most recently, Madagascar in March. During
these visits, he has the opportunity to meet with our community members in each city, allowing
him to gain an insight into the activities and needs of our grassroots members.
REGIONAL FEDERATIONS
The World Federation works closely with the Regional Federations who make up our
membership. Our Office Bearers team have frequent meetings with their regional counterparts to
track the progress we are making together for the betterment of our community.
AUSTRALIA
The Head of WF-AID, Madiha Raza, was invited to Australia in December to speak at an event
about our humanitarian work. She was warmly welcomed by our community there, who have
provided tremendous support to us.
PAKISTAN
The World Federation Office Bearers and Department Heads travelled to Karachi to attend
the Executive Council meeting in November. We always encourage local attendance at these
meetings and were pleased to see our community attending and taking part in the open forum.

After the Executive Council meeting, a group of delegates and Office Bearers travelled around
Pakistan to visit the projects we fund there. This was a fantastic opportunity for us to see the
incredible work being carried out by our partners and see their plans and proposals for the
upcoming year.
SYRIA
In 2017, The World Federation announced a partnership with the Iraqi Red Crescent and we are
currently working closely with them to facilitate urgent medical treatment for Syrian people.
IRAQ
On the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Ghadeer, we opened our office in Najaf, which will provide
the us with new opportunities to serve the community. Our team there will help us meet our aims
for higher, more effective Islamic education and spiritual guidance and also act as a much-
needed liaison point for coordinating our humanitarian work in Iraq.
During Arbaeen, we set up a medical camp between Najaf and Karbala. Over 15,000 people who
were walking from Najaf to Karbala were treated at the camp by professional doctors and nurses
who had volunteered their services. They were:

The World Federation, along with our Regional Federations, launched a new platform
called Khoja News. This is a dedicated and community-owned website, designed for our
community to share our news and celebrate our achievements.

On the website, you will be able to read about the latest news on business developments
and community projects such as achievements of Khoja institutions and Khoja individuals,
and items of interest to our community. You will also get notified of new births and wedding
announcements, whilst also learning about and paying tribute to our Khoja role models.

The platform has been designed to work across devices and all around the world. This
unique website allows you to share your stories, enabling this platform to be community-
led and focused on the Khoja community.

The Khoja News site is now live and on there, you can find a section to write and submit
your story. Once approved, your news will appear on the site ready to be viewed by the
Khoja world and beyond.

We have launched an updated version of iSistani - a mobile app which is your guide to the
practical and spiritual aspects of Muslim life.

The app’s purpose-built design places emphasis on personalisation and allows you to quickly
search through multiple laws, add your own notes and bookmark anything you want to refer back
to - all in just a few simple taps. It’s been specially designed to make it user-friendly and intuitive.

The app includes three highly-resourceful e-books by His Eminence al-Sayyid Ali al-Sistani (may
God protect him), and is the first app to have these books in English. It includes:

DIGITAL PLATFORMS
In order to reach a wider and younger audience and expand our

online presence, we have been creating short videos on various
Islamic topics in collaboration with a number of ulama.

In Muharram, we worked with four scholars on a series called ‘Become Husayni’. The
four scholars each outlines a different lesson, inspired by Karbala, for us to reflect on and
practice during the first 12 days of Muharram, with the view that we then continue applying
these lessons to our lives for the rest of the year ahead. The scholars and lessons were:

 ANIMATION VIDEOS
For the first time ever, The World Federation created a series of five
animation videos about Islamic topics.
These five videos, created with the aim of engaging with the youth in
our community, are based around contemporary issues that have been
raised in the Holy Qur’an.
The videos are:

2. Fake News
3. Laylatul Qadr
4. The Night of Qadr
5. How to fight depression
Following positive feedback on this series, another animation video
was created called Creating a Connection with Dua Arafah, which also
garnered thousands of views .
This was a brand new approach to videos for us, and we relied heavily
on the feedback of our audience on these topics and video formats. We
are always looking for new ways to engage with our online audience and
will continue to find innovative ways to address Islamic topics.

KOSOVO
The World Federation sponsors a fantastic initiative by a local
organization in Kosovo called NISAwho actively promote the message
of the Ahl al-Bayt (as). NISA publishes 1500 copies of VLERA
Magazine four times a year. This publication covers important topics
such as family values, good morals, and the biographies of holy
personalities. The magazine is regularly distributed to a number of
institutions including colleges, ministries, and schools, and it is also
sold at local kiosks.
NEPAL
A Resident Alim has been employed and a two-storey building has
been hired to help meet the spiritual needs of the refugee families in
Kathmandu. Among the activities of the Resident Alim are delivering

Two youth camps were held in India, one with
24 boys and one with 30 girls, in May 2018.
The camps promoted Islamic values and
principles and addressed socially relevant
topics. These included:

• Using Social Media Islamically
• Qur’an Recitation Tips
• Shahr Ramadan Etiquette
• Time Management
The parents of all of the students were full of
praise for the camps, with one saying ‘The
World Federation has done it before, done it
again and we are looking forward to next year
inshallah.This is a great effort to build our

and at the right time.’.
WILLS AND INHERITANCE WORKSHOPS
For the first time, The World Federation
held Wills and Inheritance workshops in
India for a total of 229 participants. These
interactive workshops aimed to create a better
understanding of Islamic laws pertaining
to wills and inheritance. Participants had
the opportunity to ask questions and work
through case scenarios.
The following topics were addressed:
• Understanding wills and their importance
from the perspective of the Qur’an and
Hadith
• Recommended things to include in a will
• Distribution of one’s estate
• Charity in wills
• Understanding inheritance
• The rights of relatives
HAJJ TRAINING WORKSHOP
The core focus of this workshop was to create
an in-depth understanding of the philosophy
of Hajj and its rituals for 30 participants
making the journey to Hajj. A demonstration
was given on how to wear Ihram, and
participants had the opportunity to ask any
questions to Maulana Sayyed Zaki Noori. The
workshop was recorded by Ali TV and will be
broadcast before every Hajj season for the
benefit of the wider community.
MADINAH & BABAL-ILM
Last year, the 16th consecutive Madinah and Bab al-Ilm Courses took place. 47
participants from across the globe gathered together to embark on this three-week
journey to acquire knowledge, gain spiritual enlightenment, perform Ziyarah and make
lifelong friendships.
A participant from last year summarised her time with this:
I came here with a lot of questions for which I was seeking answers, and in
return, I got such amazing answers that I fell in love with my religion.
COUPLES RETREAT
Our third Couple’s Retreat took place during Easter 2018. Five couples from different parts
of the world spent 10 days attending workshops and took part in cultural activities to gain
a deeper understanding of Islam, and of each other. They also performed the Ziyarah of
Imam al-Ridha (as) and Sayyida Fatima al-Ma’sooma (sa).
Alhamdulillah even after 16 years of marriage, we found the Couple’s Retreat
helped to further strengthen the bond between ourselves and our Creator...

The aim of the Khoja Heritage Project (KHP) is to promote and preserve the legacy and heritage of
the Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Community, whilst creating a sense of appreciation for the incredible
legacy of the founding members of this community.
THE KHOJA HERITAGE TOUR
Following on from the very successful, first ever, Khoja Heritage Tour in January 2018, we held a
second tour in December 2018. This 10 day tour stopped in Mumbai, Kutch and Kathiawad and
included members of our community in Toronto, London, Paris, Dar es Salaam, Reunion and
Antananarivo. The group were taught about each place’s history and significance to the Khoja
community.
KHOJA STUDIES COURSE
Dr Hasnain Walji, Chair of the Khoja Heritage Project, presented an online course, which ran for 10
weeks, called ‘Khoja Milestones: A Thematic Approach to the Community History’. The ten themes
covered were:
1. Genesis - Hindu Mythology
2. Pir Sadr Din and Khoja Identity
3. Arrival of Aga Khan in India
This course was attended by 15 people including academics, university students and Ismaili and
Ithna Asheri community members, all eager to learn more about our Khoja heritage.
KHOJA MAP
We have embarked on a project to create an interactive global map which shows 150 Khoja
jamaats and features their key details, including their address, phone number and other details
any community member may need. The aim of this is not only be of use to our members but also
to show that our community is one unit, despite being spread across the world.
KHOJA STUDIES CONFERENCE
The World Federation, in collaboration with Mumbai University, the University of Florida and
The Centre for South Asian Research (CNRS-EHESS), held a Khoja Studies Conference in
January 2019. The two day event brought together interdisciplinary Anglophone and Francophone
scholars to present and discuss the development of Khoja identity over the past centuries among
transnational communities in South Asia, East Africa, Western Europe, and North America.
The conference had 25 papers and one keynote address and was held in Mumbai University. 50
participants and observers contributed to the debate, exploring the history which unfolded in the
early 15th century.

FATIMA INSPIRES
Our annual Fatima Inspires initiative gives our community an opportunity to highlight these
female role models and females heroes in honour of the Lady of Light, Sayyida Fatima (sa). We
are very privileged to have amazing examples of strong and inspiring female role models in our
community.
We have had some fantastic feedback on this initiative and have received incredible nominations
of women who have done so much for our community, who may otherwise have gone
unacknowledged.
This incredible initiative is an opportunity for our community as a whole to come together and
recognise and appreciate incredible women and bring them to the forefront of our community by
celebrating their achievements.

SUPPORTING STUDENT EDUCATION
One of our goals at The World Federation is to enable growth and progress through education,
to create a generation who will work together to improve their communities. We offer a variety of
student loans, including:

HIRIDJEE FOUNDATION STUDENT LOAN
The Hiridjee Foundation Student loan is given to two female students from the Khoja community
who wish to study further education. The current beneficiaries of the loan include students who
are pursuing PhD in Molecular Biomedical Research from Aston University, UK and MBBS from
Manipal University, India amongst many more incredible courses.
IBRAHIM JAFFER IBRAHIM EDUCATION LOAN
The Ibrahim Jaffer Ibrahim Education loan was launched in collaboration with Africa Federation
for students looking to study for a Bacherlor’s degree but unable to afford the cost. The most
recent recipients of the loan have now completed their degrees; one in Business Administration
and IT from Simon Fraser University Vancouver, Canada and the other completed her Master’s
in Pharmacy from Portsmouth University, UK.
WALJI ALIBHAI PRADHAN TRUST FUND
This loan scheme was setup in 2012 to enable 2 Khoja under graduate students to pursue
Higher Education. As a result of this a student has studied Doctorate in Dental Surgery at SUNY
at Buffalo, USA and has successfully completed her loan. Another student studied Masters of
Science at University of Bradford, UK and is repaying his loan. Loan repayments are recycled so
there are currently two new beneficiaries - one is pursuing Bachelors of Social Work in Canada
and the other is working towards a Masters of Applied Practice Professional Accounting in New
Zealand.
AUSTRALIA EDUCATION FUND
The Australia Education Fund was setup to offer education loans to Khoja community students
to pursue education in Australia. In 2018, two students were awarded loans to study Business
Information Systems at La Trobe University, Australia and Bachelor of Commerce at Torrens
University, Australia.

 EXCO
The Third Executive Council (ExCo) meeting took place in November 2018, hosted by Pakistan
Federation. During the meeting, many important topics were discussed and action plans created
to ensure we are continuously making progress for the betterment of our community.

The meeting started on Friday evening and continued on until Saturday evening. There were
keynote addresses from our President and dignitaries from Pakistan Federation as well as papers
presented on various topics relevant to our community. We presented four awards to community
members to recognise their services to our community:

1. The Al-Nur Award for Contributions (within the KSI Community) for either voluntary efforts or
philanthropy was presented to Al-Hajj Mustafa Kassamali Gokal

2. The Al-Najm Award for Youth Voluntary Contribution to the Community for Humanity was
presented to Dr Sajida Hassan Abdulhussein

3. The Al-Shams Award for Contribution to Wider Society was presented to Nadira Panjwani

4. The Al-Qamar Award for Length of Service to the Community or Humanity was awarded to
Rafiq M Habib

REAL TALK

As part of our Third ExCo, Pakistan Federation and Pirhai Jamaat organised an interactive
meeting with The World Federation Office Bearers and the Khoja youth of the Pakistani
community. The meeting provided an insight into the objectives and future plans of The World
Federation for the Khoja Youth community.

This was an opportunity for the panel to impart advice and guidance to the youth of the
community, in regards to relevant current issues that the youth of today face. This was followed by
EXCO - KARACHI, DECEMBER 2018 an interactive question and answer session for more specific queries. The turnout from both the
women and the gents was overwhelming and this resulted in a fast paced and engaging session.

We provide families with nutritious and long lasting food packs which
include foods such as lentils, cooking oil, rice and sugar.
ORPHAN AND WIDOW SUPPORT
Many people have lost their family members, their homes and their
belongings due to the conflict. We then provide them with furniture, and
with heaters in the winter. The orphans have seen so much suffering at
their young ages, and some have known no other life than living with
war. We have provided some of them with new clothes, toys and Eid gifts
to put a smile on their faces.
EDUCATION
Some of the young children have never had the opportunity to go to
school. Your donations mean we can pay their tuition fees, helping them

chairs to notebooks and backpacks, to make their school experience the

YEMEN
Yemen is facing the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 3.6
million people in Yemen have been forced from their homes, with most
displaced by the fighting since March 2015. At least 10,000 people have
been killed so far.
One of the main struggles Yemenis face due to the conflict is food
insecurity. 400,000 children under 5 are suffering from severe
malnutrition and a staggering 14 million more people are facing
starvation. Nowhere in the world are there more people at risk of
starvation than in Yemen.

 WF-AID’s annual Ramadan Relief appeal helps to

India, Kenya and the United Kingdom in the form of

Food baskets provide a nutritious daily meal that has
a far wider impact: they give children the strength
to go to school, their parents the strength to work
better and communities a chance to prosper without
needing to worry where their next meal will come
from. During Shahr Ramadan, the food packs allow
families to focus on benefitting spiritually from the
Holy month instead of worrying about where their
next meal will come from.

WF-AID distributed 19,705 Food Packs, which
were filled with nutritious items to widows,
orphans and the elderly living in 16 countries.
During Shahr Ramadan, we reached over 125,000
people and helped ease their lives during the
