Career  history
2003  -‐       Senior  Lecturer,  Department  of  Media,  Art  and  Design,
Canterbury  Christ  Church  University.  Digital  Media  Programme
    Director  since  2007.
2002  –  2003   Lecturer,  Ffotogallery,  Cardiff.  I  designed  and  ran  evening
classes  in  photography,  digital  imaging  and  web  design.
1998  –  2002   Research  Fellow,  Digital  Fine  Art  Practice,  University  of  Wales
Institute,  Cardiff.  My  contract  ran  for  four  years.  My  responsibilities
included:
• Working  closely  with  staff  to  enable  them  to  integrate  digital  media
into  their  practical  research,
• Working  with  research-‐active  staff  to  raise  their  profiles  for  the  2001
RAE  submission,
• Designing  a  website  featuring  practical  work  by  staff,
• Teaching  on  the  undergraduate  programmes.

1985-‐1998   I  worked  as  a  practicing  artist,  exhibiting  my  work  regularly.  I

helped  to  run  a  print  workshop  for  artists  in  London.
1996     Artist  in  residence  (3  months)  Sevenoaks  School,  Kent.
1993  –  1996   Lecturer,  painting  evening  classes,  Camden  Arts  Centre,

1977  –  78   Apprentice  model  maker  at  Pentagram  Design,  London.  I  worked  for
the  architect  Theo  Crosby  and  designer  Kenneth  Grange.

Research
My  practice  based  research  embraces  hybrid  processes  that  integrate  digital  media
with  physical  objects.  I  use  my  works  in  multimedia  and  collaborative  performances
settings  at  live  events,  and  also  in  public  and  private  gallery  settings.
My  images  and  sculptural  work  have  been  exhibited  at  the  Royal  Academy  in  London
and  at  the  Newcastle  International  Print  Biennale.  In  2012  I  was  invited  to  contribute
to  a  series  of  papers  and  presentations  as  part  of  the  research/practice  conference
organised  by  the  European  Artists  Research  Network  (EARN)  at  documenta13  in
Kassell,  Germany.

My  research  responds  the  questions  concerning  the  relationship  between  subject
and  object.  The  objects  I  make,  whether  physical,  virtual,  or  hybrid,  seek  to  engage
the  viewer  actively,  and  to  provoke  a  subjective  response.  During  this  process  the

School  of  Media,  Art  and  Design,  Canterbury  Christ  Church  University

notion  of  the  ‘subjectile’,  which  is  both  subject  and  object  combined,  arguably
emerges.

My  research  outputs  include  films,  sculpture,  drawings  and  print.  My  working
processes  employ  digital  media  extensively  for  sketching,  mock-‐ups,  and  for
broadcasting  news  on  his  work.

My  research  interests  are  hybrid  and  span  both  theory  and  practice,  and  the
analogue  and  digital  realms:

• The  creative  uses  of  digital  media,
• The  role  of  ‘traditional’,  pre-‐digital  art  practice  in  the  digital  age
• The  history  and  theory  of  art  since  1900,  especially  in  relation  to  the  changing
uses  of  technologies  for  creative  purposes,
• Antonin  Artaud’s  writings  and  graphic  works,
• Digital  media  in  experimental  art,  sound  and  live  performance  applications,
Physical  computing  and  multimedia  performance

Knowledge  exchange
As  an  organiser  and  contributor  to  numerous  events  with  external  audiences,  my
research  has  established  ways  developing  strategic  partnerships  with  organisations
such  as  the  award-‐winning  Free  Range  Music,  film  and  poetry  events.

The  public  reach  of  my  art  works  enabled  visitors  to  the  Royal  Academy  Summer
show  during  2010  and  2012  (132,926  visitors)  the  opportunity  to  see  his  works.

‘Nerve  Scales’,  an  event  that  I  designed  and  organised  in  2014  was  the  result  of  a
collaboration  between  academic  colleagues,  actors,  musicians  and  Phd  students.  I
presented  sound  generation  devices  that  integrate  customised  programming,
commercial  music  software,  microprocessors  and  hand-‐made  objects.

Funding
2015   Internal  funding  for  a  physical  computing  research  project.  Using
programmable  microcontrollers  (arduino),  electric  guitars,  and  hand-‐made
instruments,  the  project  was  presented  at  #digibury  on  14  October  2015.

2013     Futures  Initiative  Funding  to  conduct  a  project  with  students  using  ipads  and
an  online  database  recording  their  carbon  footprints.  The  funding  also  paid
for  wearable  health  monitors,  that  have  enabled  students  to  monitor  their
health,  and  food  consumption.

2011     Application  for  a  Leverhulme  artist  in  residence  project.  The  application  was
short-‐listed,  but  eventually  was  not  taken  further.

2007-‐2009
Research  Informed  teaching  bid  of  £17,000  won  by  Tim  Long  and  Bryan
Hawkins.  The  bid  was  awarded  to  conduct  collaborative  work  investigating

selected  by  the  organisers,  including  a  colleaugue,  Dr.  Karen  Shepherdson.
The  exhibition  offered  the  opportunity  for  practical  research  to  be
encountered  by  new  audiences.

I  have  established  links  with  professional  design  companies  in  Kent  who  have  visited
Canterbury  to  present  to  students.  These  include:

I  am  second  supervisor  for  a  PhD  student  researching  the  uses  of  technologies  in
teaching,  and  supervise  MA  Research  students.  I  am  also  also  involved  in  delivering
lectures,  seminars  and  workshops  on  practice-‐based  research  to  post-‐graduates.

Teaching  and  subject  expertise
I  currently  convene  and  teach  these  modules:
• Introduction  to  Digital  Creative  Practice
• Digital  Imaging
• Web  Design
• Digital  Entrepreneurship
• Individual  Creative  Practice
• Individual  Study

My  subject  expertise  covers  teaching  technical  topics  including  web  design,  digital
imaging  and  multimedia  production.  I  supervise  final  year  BA  dissertations  and
oversee  practical  projects  for  final  year  students.  Tim  also  runs  practice  based

research  seminars  for  post-‐graduate  students.  Tim  is  particularly  committed  to,  and
interested  in,  conceptual  development  for  practical  projects  and  related  creative
strategies,  and  facilitating  group  work  for  presentations  and  assessments.  These
skills  also  encourage  students  to  consider  the  professional  perspectives  and  their
application  after  graduation.
I  directed  the  validation  of  a  new  Digital  Media  single  honours  BA  pathway,  and  the
revalidation  of  the  combined  honours  Digital  Media,  during  the  academic  year  2013-‐
14.  In  collaboration  with  colleagues  I  am  drawing  up  plans  for  a  new  BA  Hons
programme  titled  ‘Media  Arts’.

I  am  also  involved  with  future  planning  for  IT  computer  suites  for  the  School  of
Media,  Art  and  Design.  As  demand  for  technical  teaching  on  more  programmes  has
increased,  the  School  is  evolving  a  strategy  that  effectively  accommodates  these
needs.  I  am  committed  to  sharing  his  skills  and  interests  in  this  area  to  assist  this
transition.
