Your Name: Karla Arana Date of Activity: 2/9/19; 3/7/19; 3/8/19

Faculty name: Rajni

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

The first professional activity I participated in was the Stop the Bleed course at the public health
department on 2/9/19. This class was very informative and is aimed to teach health care
professionals and the general public how to stop life threatening bleeds. This training program
teaches participants how to use a tourniquet properly and how to pack a wound if needed. The
second professional activity I participated in was a BLS course provided by the American Heart
Association on 3/7/19. For my final professional activity hours I volunteered at Casa Maria and
organized food that was handed out to the community on 3/8/19.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

The Stop the Bleed course was 2 hours and 30 minutes in length and was held at the Abrams
Public Health Center on the Banner South Campus. The class was held inside a conference room
and was taught using a powerpoint and demonstrations. The BLS course was 3 hours in length
and was held in a Best Western conference room. The instructor demonstrated CPR and had us
practice with mannequins. Casa Maria is located in South Tucson and I volunteered for a total of
4 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

These three experiences were unique and taught me something different. The Stop the Bleed course
taught me about what I should do in the event of a traumatic event and how to increase a person’s
chance of survival when they are bleeding profusely. This topic was very interesting to learn about
and has made me feel prepared if I am in a situation where I would need to help someone who is
bleeding. The second experience I participated was the BLS course, this course was a good
refresher on CPR and the proper techniques. I was also able to refresh my memory on performing
CPR on infants and children, as well as using an AED. This course was also taught by a different
instructor and I was able to learn different tips about CPR. My last experience was volunteering at
Casa Maria. I was able to observe the large amount of homelessness present in the community
where Casa Maria was located. I also saw how many people relied on this food bank for food,
clothes, and community. During my time volunteering there was a Catholic mass held outside and
many people in the community attended this service. This community also had a large Spanish
speaking population and the service was a translated. This volunteer experience made me think
about the possible health disparities that could be present in this community and whether or not
they have access to healthcare.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend all these experiences in the future since they offer unique experiences and
teach different skills. The Stop the Bleed course was very informative and promotes
collaboration with other healthcare professionals who take the class. Casa Maria is a very good
volunteer experience and offers many services that people can help with.
