Q1 Figure Q1 illustrates a schematic model of cantilever beam in free vibration three

degree of freedom system. The system was simplified into spring mass free vibration
system with the value of k1 =k2 =k3 = 10 N/m and m1 = m2 = m3 = 1 kg. Assume all the
masses move to the right direction.

(a) Demonstrate the equation of motion in matrix form.

(3 marks)

(b) Employ the dynamical matrix solution.

(3 marks)

(c) Examine the matrix roots and eigenvalues for each mass using Rule of Sarrus
(4 marks)

(d) Differentiate between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd vibration model characteristics of the
system. Assume x1=1 in modal vector.
(9 marks)

(e) Evaluate the system based on three degree of freedom model shape diagram.
(6 marks)

Q2 An experimental setup as shown in Figure Q2 was designed to identify whether the

material with the lowest stiffness value (Table Q2) could be used as the material for
the second spring, k2 to withstand the system fundamental natural frequency of 2.8
rad/s. The value of the masses given as mass 1, m1 = 2.4 kg and mass 2, m2 = 3.7 kg.
Spring 1 and spring 3 is made of steel (k1 = k3 = ksteel).

(a) Construct the Equation of Motion of the system in matrix form

(4 marks)

By using ωn = 2.8 rad/s as the exact fundamental natural frequency (ωn exact),
estimate the approximate fundamental natural frequency (ωn approximate) of
