Social Awareness Campaign

Education is extremely important. A big part of the education system is the students. How

students perform in school is important, and there are many different things that factor into how

they learn. This is why my partner, Max Diaz, and I are designing our project around the idea of

helping students to succeed in learning. We plan to do this by raising awareness about the

benefits of two percent milk. Drinking two percent is a good way for students to have a better

chance at success.

When Max was younger his doctor always asked if he was drinking two percent milk.

This is because two percent milk is healthier for growing kids. Utah schools don’t have two

percent milk though. We have skim milk and one percent milk, because people believe this

would lead to a lower rate of obesity in children. This isn’t the case though, “a 2010 study by

researchers at Children's Hospital in Boston, which also looked at preschool-aged children,

found that higher intake of whole milk at age 2 was associated with a slightly lower BMI (body

mass index). The researchers concluded that switching from whole milk to reduced-fat milk at 2

years did not appear to prevent weight problems in early childhood.” (www.npr.org) We have

laws that force our school lunch programs to serve one percent and skim milk. Some district

workers are trying to change these laws though, and help get two percent milk back into schools.

Max Diaz and I spoke with Jana Cruz, the director of Jordan School District nutrition

services, and she is currently trying to get two percent milk back in schools. To do our part to

help we plan on creating flyers and e-flyers. We plan to pass flyers out and to post the e-flyers on

multiple social media pages. These flyers will detail the benefits of students drinking two
percent milk, and will have the aim to gain the support of parents in getting two percent milk

back into Utah schools. Along with the flyers and e-flyers we plan on going to a city council

meeting to bring up the issue of not having two percent milk to people who are involved in our

government. The cost should hopefully be around nine dollars, or maybe 18 dollars, depending

on how many flyers we decide to make. When we do our project our time will be split into four

different sections. We will use two hours to buy materials and create flyers. Another three hours

will be used to go and participate at city council meetings. The last hour will be dedicated to

passing out and posting flyers. This will be an important part of the project because many people

not in the schools do not know what is actually happening at schools. Hopefully at the end of our

project we will be able to find more opportunities to continue and help gain support for our

cause.

Students need to be given the necessary tools to succeed. Proper nutrition is one of these

tools. Helping students get the proper nutrients so that they can develop their minds and bodies is

one of the keys to success in learning. Max Diaz and I plan to help students with their

development by raising awareness to what kind of nutrition students need, particularly

concerning milk. Invest in our current and future students and help us get our two percent milk.
