Introduction

Shunt active power filter (SAPF) has now become a well-known
sophisticated technology to overcome current harmonics and reactive
power compensation issues.

Harmonic and reactive power has developed, causing power quality
problems in the power system.

To overcome this problem shunt active power filter use.

Shunt active power filters compensate load current harmonics by
injecting equal but opposite harmonic compensating current.

Shunt active power filter use for compensation of harmonics and
reactive power.

Reference Current Generation Schemes for SAPF

Ø
Instantaneous p-q theory
Ø
Instantaneous Active and Reactive current
Ø
Synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory
Ø
Unit vector template generation (UVTG)
Instantaneous p-q theory
Ø
Instantaneous reactive power theory (IRPT) or p-q theory is to calculate the
desired compensation current instantaneously by using only algebraic equations.
Instantaneous Active and Reactive current
Ø
In instantaneous active and reactive current component (Id-Iq) method angle “θ”
is calculated directly from main voltages and thus enables the method to be
frequency independent.
Synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory
Ø
SRF control technique is based on transformation of current from a-b-c frame
to the synchronously rotating d-q frame.
Comparative Study of Control Techniques
Ø
p-q theory:
v
It is instantaneous.
v
It has only algebraic calculations.
v
IRP theory has advantage that obtained fundamental components of active and
reactive power are DC quantities. As these signals are DC quantities, α-β reference
frame is unaffected by any phase shift introduced by low pass filter
v
Valid in steady state & transient conditions.
Ø
Id-Iq theory
v
“θ” is directly calculated from main voltages & thus enables method to be frequency
independent.
Ø
SRF theory:
v
It utilizes the measured load current in order to derive the reference signals without
the use of grid voltage.
v
Any non DC component presented can be filtered easily because the fundamental
components tuned as DC components.
Ø
Id-Iq theory
v
“θ” is directly calculated from main voltages & thus enables method to be frequency
independent. Thus large no of synchronization problems with unbalanced and non
sinusoidal voltages are also avoided.
v
Better harmonic compensation performance .
Ø
Unit vector template generation (UVTG) theory:
v
The extraction of positive sequence component of 3-ph supply voltages are based on
unit vector template generation.
v
A PLL is used to extract the pure sinusoidal signal at fundamental frequency. It gives
signal in terms of sine and cosine functions.
v
It requires lesser number of sensor counts and computation delay.
Ø
Combined p-q and UVTG theory:
v
When the source voltage is distorted, the compensation current of conventional p-q
control strategy will not be sinusoidal. So PLL is applied to eliminate the distortion
in the supply voltage before applying to the conventional P-Q control strategy.
Conclusion
In the presentation the reference source current generation for three
phase shunt active power filter is done using instantaneous active and
Reactive power theory(P-Q),instantaneous active and reactive current
(Id-Iq) ,Synchronous reference theory to overcome current harmonics
and reactive power compensation issues. Filters compensate load current
harmonics by injecting equal but opposite harmonic compensating
current.
