test panels at the site, for examination and possible testing (at the discretion of
the Engineer), using the equipment, materials and mix proposed for the project.
When approved, the panels will be the standard of workmanship required for all
shotcrete.

1. Make 2 test panels, each at least 750x750mm, for each required mix and for
each shooting position to be encountered at the site. Include required
reinforcement in half of each panel. Construct panels to the maximum
shotcrete thickness required for the Work, but not less than 75mm.
2. All subsequently cut or broken surfaces shall be dense and free from laminations and sand
pockets.
3. Do not start placement of shotcrete until the test panels have been approved by the Engineer.

4. Maintain approved panels until all shotcrete has been installed and approved; then remove
panels from the site.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Requirements:
1. Do not apply shotcrete when the ambient temperature is above 32deg.

PART 2 -PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Minimum compressive strength shall be 30N/Sq.mm at 28 days.

B. Thickness of shotcrete shall be 75 mm for the shoring system and 50mm for swimming pool and
other water features.
C. Cement shall be SRC and minimum content shall be 400 Kg/Cu.m.
D. Minimum cement to aggregate ratio by weight shall be 1 to 4 by mass.
E. Maximum aggregate size of shall be 5 mm.
F. Water: Clean and potable.
G.Reinforcement: Galvanized welded wire fabric A193 or A252 conform to B.S as per selection of
Engineer.
H.Reinforcement Anchors: Expansion type having diameter and length as required for location of
reinforcement.
I. Tie Wire: Black annealed wire, gauge as required to securely hold reinforcement in place during
placement of shotcrete.

2. 2 PROPORTIONING
A. Mix Proportion: One part SRC to 4 parts of aggregate, by weight in place.
1. The mix at the machine shall be one part Portland cement to 3-1/2 parts
aggregate, or as required to compensate for loss of aggregate during
application.
2. Use only amount of water necessary to produce proper hydration.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Protection: Cover or otherwise protect adjacent surfaces not required to receive

shotcrete.
B. Surface Preparation:
1. Existing Concrete: Remove loose and deteriorated concrete. Roughen existing surfaces by
sand blasting for proper bonding of shotcrete. Taper edges; do not leave square shoulders.
Prior to application of shotcrete, dampen surfaces with water for 24 hours. Blow away free
water with compressed air.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install in place sand cement level pegs (Shall be fixed at intervals of 2m for shoring system and 1-
1.5m for swimming pool and other water features at the centre) to indicate required finished
thickness, which shall be not less than 75/50mm from
surface, and line of shotcrete.
B. Tolerances
1. Tolerance for cover to steel reinforcement: 30mm, except that it shall not be greater
than one-third of the indicated cover.
2. Concrete (Shotcrete) Surfaces: Tolerances up to 50 percent larger than those specified
for formed surfaces in ACI 301, unless otherwise indicated.
C. Installation of Reinforcement:
1. Steel shall be fixed to the lines, levels and profiles of the proposed structures and securely
fixed in place. When two rows of steel mesh are required, these shall be staggered.
2. Place reinforcement to provide 30mm of shotcrete cover over reinforcement,
unless otherwise indicated. Mesh placed over shoring systems shall be a galvanized
welded wire fabric A193 conform to B.S.
3. For shoring system only, the mesh shall be fixed to shoring system surface using hooks
which are to be fixed on the shoring system surface by drilling hole on the surface with SS
metal plugs.
4. For shoring system only, install anchors in accordance with manufacturer's printed
instructions. Space anchors not exceeding 750mm on center, each direction, unless
otherwise indicated.

D. Placement of Shotcrete:
1. Clean the shoring system surface to ensure that they are free from loose debris like sand,
cement particles, dust, etc. Hands fill voids with sand cement plaster.
2. Check the spray machine and material delivery hose to ensure that they are in order.
3. Connect material pipes with as few bends as possible.
4. Once the equipment / hose system is checked, spray a trial area.
5. Start spraying the wet shotcrete ready-mix to the shoring system surface keeping nozzle
at a distance of 0.6 to 1.2m from surface and apply forming a series of loops from side to
side and up and down so as to spray the concrete evenly.
6. Each layer is built up by making several passes of the nozzle over the working area in a
pattern of over lapping loops maintaining the direction of application.
7. The nozzle is held nearly perpendicular to the surface being sprayed. Slight angling of the
jet may be necessary at the junction between walls and floors to ensure proper
encasement of reinforcement.
8. For vertical and near vertical surface the application shall commence at the bottom. The first
layer shall at least completely embed reinforcement. The layer thickness shall be governed
mainly by the requirement that the material should not sag, where the thick layers are
applied. It is important that the top surface be maintained at a slope of approximately 45

degrees.
9. Concrete shotcrete shall be applied with min. 3 layers.
10. Rebound material must not be re-used in the sprayed concrete machine.
11. The Contractor shall use a compressor of sufficient capacity to ensure the satisfactory
completion of guniting operation. The compressor shall maintain a supply of air adequate to
maintain sufficient nozzle velocity for all parts of the work while simultaneously operating a
blow pipe for cleaning away rebound material if required.
12. The discharge nozzle shall be equipped with a manually operated water injection system
(water ring) for directing an even distribution of water to the sand/cement mixture. The
water valve shall be capable of ready adjustment to vary the quantity of water. Water
pressure shall be maintained at a uniform level which shall be at least 0.1N/sq.mm above
operating pressure and sufficient to ensure adequate hydration at all times. The nozzle
shall be capable of delivering a conical uniform discharge stream.
E. For shoring system only, minimum area of 400-500 Sq.m shall be made ready to receive
shotcrete every day.

3.3 CURING AND PROTECTION

A. When the shotcrete is still fresh, wood float the sub-strait to the required profile.
B. Once the shotcrete has been trowelled with wood float finish, the same needs to be cured with
curing agent or water for a minimum period of 5 days. The entire
shotcrete surface shall be protected from direct sun light with pre-damped hessian
cloth. Poor curing would render shrinkage cracks.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Clean adjacent surfaces that have been soiled or defaced performing the Work of this Section.
Restore marred or damaged surfaces.
