Questions:

1. What management perspective is reflected in the way the Board of Directors

selected people for supervisory jobs? Would another perspective be better for

this type of organization?

It’s a classical management perspective which was reflected on the Board

of Directors in selecting people for supervisory job. They focus on direct

inputs to efficiency for this case it’s the examination. For the sake of fairness

and open competition.

Yes, there would be a better perspective. They should consider other

management perspective. They should consider the job experience of the

applicants, their behavior and previous job performance. They must be

holistic in selecting the right people for the position. I believe a postmodern

approach such as situational leadership perspective is suitable approach

on this situation since the position is a supervisory job and needs a

leadership skills. Management by objectives is another option that they use.

2. Why did the Board of Directors pick a permanent supervisory strictly by test

results? Is this fair to employees who have supervisory experience? Is it fair to

select a supervisor based on only job experience?

I really do not know what’s in the mind of the Board of Directors why they

solely use the test results as their basis in hiring a supervisory level. Maybe

just to be fair and open to all applicants, however as I mentioned earlier they

must be holistic in selecting the right people particularly for a supervisory

level position.

Somehow it is not fair but still it is the prerogative of the Board of Directors.

But they are really a good supervisor, a written exam would be very easy

for them because they are already practicing it.

Selecting a supervisor based only for job experience is a case to case basis.

It depends on the company’s line of business. There are those people that

are very good in handling people and management but poor in their

academics (hard knocks Managers) which were raised from the ranks.

3. If you were Carla De Leon, what would you do? What options would you explore

in order to make the best of the situation?

Carla may file an appeal to the HR and Board of Director to consider her as

an option for the position since she was the officer in charge for four (4)

years and justify to them that experience matters mostly on decision making

as a supervisor.
