DEMONSTRATIONSD

5.2 Diffusion

Aim: To demonstrate diffusion in liquids and gases.

Equipment:

30 cm high cylinder

Potassium permanganate crystal

Long tweezers

Perfume or aftershave

Demonstration 1

At the beginning of the lesson fill the 30 cm high cylinder with water.

Using the long tweezers place a potassium permanganate crystal in the bottom of the cylinder.

Leave for the duration of the lesson or, better still, overnight.

Explanation

As the potassium permanganate crystal dissolves in the water, the collisions with the water molecules cause the potassium permanganate (purple colouring) to spread through the water from a region of high concentration (at the bottom) to a region of low concentration (at the top) until a uniform concentration is obtained.

Demonstration 2

Spray some perfume or aftershave at the front of the classroom.

Ask the students to raise their hand when they can smell the perfume.

Explanation

As the air molecules collide with the perfume molecules they move the perfume molecules from a region of high concentration (at the front) to a region of low concentration (to the back) until a uniform concentration is obtained.
