INTRODUCTION OF STUDY
The Yallahs River originates in the Blue Mountains Range and flows southwards through the
parishes of St. Andrew and St. Thomas where it empties into the Caribbean Sea at Yallahs. It
is approximately 37 km long. It flows past the area known as Judgement Cliff. The river is
used for a variety of purposes including mining for sand and domestic purposes. The river
was ideal for studying because it was the closest river in our proximity from which we were
able to collect all our relative information.
AIM OF STUDY

To identify and describe the features present at Ramble and Poor Man’s Corner on the
Yallahs River and to determine the factors responsible for changes in these features.
METHODOLOGY

The information contained in this study was collected on Thursday April 12, 2018, during a
field exercise conducted along the Yallahs River. Fieldwork was carried out along the water
course of the river in Yallahs, Saint Thomas, Jamaica. Three localities were examined during
the field study namely River Head, Ramble and Poor Man’s Corner however only Ramble
and Poor Man’s Corner will be assessed in this School Based Assessment.

Measurements of the width and depth of the channel were obtained by the use of a
measuring tape and a ruler. The lengths of some fluvial landforms were also measured in
addition to the degree of slope along the valley sides. A list of all river features seen was
recorded along with the measure of their respective dimensions.

An analysis of the sediment found in the river channel was done at all three localities. The
samples were selected at random and for each, the axes were measured using a ruler. Their
shapes and types were also established. The velocity of the river was also measured by the
use of a pole, a float and a stopwatch. Where a pole was placed at a point in the centre of the
river channel then a straight line of 10m was measured downstream and another pole was
placed at the ten metre (10m) mark. The float was released from the first pole and a
stopwatch was used to determine the time taken by the float to reach the second. This was
repeated twice and then the average of the times was taken. The formula distance/time was
used to calculate the velocity in ms-1. This was done at all 3 localities.
PRESENTATION AND
ANALYSIS OF DATA

You need a brief introduction to rivers at this point. It should not be more than three
sentences.

In this section of the project there will be a display of the values that were obtained at the
field trip and some photographs to support the information. This is not needed.

The velocity at Ramble was greater than the velocity at Poor Man’s Corner hence the value
was smaller. Factors that would have contributed to this are Channel Dimensions and the
nature of rocks. The Dimensions at Ramble are smaller than those at Poor Man’s Corner so it
will take a longer time for a float to travel from one point to another at Poor Man’s Corner
than at Ramble. The nature or size of the rocks could cause a hindrance to the fast flowing of
water and the effect it has on the float. This is to go in the Analysis

Ramble
Ramble is located in the middle course of the river....Describe the location and list and
describe the features seen. You need to briefly explain the formation of the features and
place the phot or diagram below each.

Description of features At Ramble

These are to be discussed above where I stated. You need diagrams and photographs.

Meanders – These were not very circular. There is an undeveloped River cliff.

The meander belt is about 250 metres (m).

Rapids- There were more numerous rapids at Ramble but they were smaller than the ones
present at River Head. This is because the Boulders at Ramble were not as big as those at
River Head.

Potholes- There was a pothole formed at the base of a very large Boulder with a depth of 66
cm or 0.66 m.

Aits- There were more aits at Ramble ranging in size from 2.9 m to 13.1 m. These were
mainly composed of Cobbles and Pebbles.
Pictures are to be placed under the relevant heading. Remember one picture can be
used for more than one feature.

Pictures of Ramble
The velocity at Poor Man’s Corner was less than the velocity at Ramble. Factors that would
have contributed to this are Channel Dimensions and the nature of rocks. The Dimensions at
Poor Man’s Corner are greater than those at Ramble hence so it will take a less time for a
float to travel from at Ramble than at Poor Man’s Corner. As it relates to the records the
average time taken for the float to move from one point to the other at Poor Man’s Corner is
faster than that of Ramble even though Poor Man’s corner has greater dimensions.

Descriptions of Features at Poor Man’s Corner

Aits- There are several aits composed mainly of Cobbles, course, sand and granules.

Meanders- Meanders here are very circular. Sings of formation caused by the Impact of
humans. Example of this is scraping away of bank by Tractors

River cliff- The height of the cliff is about 15 metres. River cliffs at sides are two are two
straight which shows that its formation is caused by human activity. Levees are formed
because of the clearing out of the side of the river bank.

changes occur. You need textbooks etc to help you with this section.
Conclusion

This is a summary of the Presentation and Analysis of Data. You need to briefly state
the features seen, how they change and why. This should be about 5 to 6 sentences.
