Lesson plan title: Shapes in St. Basil Cathedral
Grade level: 2nd

Goal of Lesson (describe):


Students will learn about St. Basil Cathedral analysis geometric shapes apart of the
inside dome paintings. Students will compare and contrast of Iowa capitol dome
paintings. In the end of the project, student will reflect on the visual content and the
pattern and rhythm of building dome.
Lesson Objectives (list):
Knowledge: Students will describe the characteristics of St. Basil architecture.

Comprehension: Students will compare and contrast about St Basil Cathedral
in Moscow with architecture in dome paintings near where they live. (VA:Cn10.1.4a)

Application: Students will apply characteristic from contemporary artists and
designs from architecture to their own artwork. (VA:Cr1.1.4a) (Express, Understanding
Art World)
Analysis: Students will distinguish the differences and similarities between
architects and contemporary artists. ( VA:Cn11.1.4a ) (Express)
Synthesis: Students will develop their own dome drawings with their own
shapes and design based on the onion shape dome or the capital dome.

Evaluation: Students will review the classes artwork on display and conclude
that there are some similarities and difference of buildings near where they live to
others in Moscow. (VA:Pr5.1.4a) (Envision, Express, Stretch & Explore)

Materials/tools/technology (list):
Take advantage of 1:1 technology (if a part of the school) (If not use projector or
smart board to inspect patterns and shapes), student journals, pencil, pastels, black
paper
