Prob.4 For the beam shown, find the reactions at the supports and plot the shear-force and bending
moment diagrams. Label the diagrams properly and provide values at all key points (using
singularity functions exclusively).

Prob.6 Sketch n shows a simply supported beam loaded with a ramp function over its entire length,
the largest value being P/l. Determine the shear force and the bending moment and the critical
section with the largest bending moment. Also, draw the shear and moment diagrams.

Figure 6.
Prob.7 Use singularity functions for the force system shown in Sketch s to determine the load
intensity, the shear force, and the bending moment in the beam. From a force analysis determine
the reaction forces R1 and R2. Also, draw the shear and moment diagrams.

Figure 7.
Prob.8 Determine the location and magnitude of maximum shear stress and bending moment for
the beam shown in Sketch z. Use wo = 10 kN/m and l = 5 m.

Figure 8.
Prob.9 For each of the plane stress states listed below, draw a Mohr’s circle diagram properly
labeled, find the principal normal and shear stresses, and determine the angle from the x axis to
σ1. Draw stress elements and label all details.
(a) σx = 20 kpsi, σy = −10 kpsi, τxy = 8 kpsi cw
(b) σx = 16 kpsi, σy = 9 kpsi, τxy = 5 kpsi ccw
(c) σx = −8MPa, σy = 7MPa, τxy = 6MPa cw

(d) σx = 9MPa, σy = −6MPa, τxy = 3MPa cw

Prob.10 For each of the stress states listed below, find all three principal normal and shear stresses.
Draw a complete Mohr’s three-circle diagram and label all points of interest.
(a) σx = −80MPa, σy = −30MPa, τxy = 20MPa cw
(b) σx = 30MPa, σy = −60MPa, τxy = 30MPa cw

Prob.11 For each section illustrated, find the second moment of area, the location of the neutral
axis, and the distances from the neutral axis to the top and bottom surfaces. Consider that the
section is transmitting a positive bending moment about the z axis, Mz, where Mz = 10 kip.in if the
dimensions of the section are given in ips units, or Mz = 1.13 kN. m if the dimensions are in SI
units. Determine the resulting stresses at the top and bottom surfaces and at every abrupt change
in the cross section.

Prob.12 For the beam illustrated in Figure 7, find the locations and magnitudes of the maximum
tensile bending stress due to M and the maximum shear stress due to V.

Figure 10.
Prob.13 For the beam illustrated in Figure 8, find the locations and magnitudes of the maximum
tensile bending stress due to M and the maximum shear stress due to V.
