The Gauss-Seidel iteration method is used to solve power flow equations. It iterates to find bus voltages that satisfy the power flow equations. The voltage at each bus i is calculated based on scheduled real and reactive power as well as the voltages calculated at other buses from the previous iteration. Iteration continues until the maximum change in any bus voltage between iterations is less than a threshold epsilon. The method handles voltage controlled buses by first computing reactive power then adjusting the voltage if power limits are violated.

EE 523 Power System Analysis II Gauss Seidel Iteration Method For voltage-controlled (PV) bus, compute first for the reactive power Qi: 𝒏 ∗ 𝒊 𝒊 𝒊𝒌 𝒌 𝒌 𝟏
• Calculate the new voltage Vi using the resulting
value of Qi*** if Qi(min) ≤ Qi ≤ Qi(max) • Use the imaginary component of Vi to compute for the real component of the specified voltage magnitude of the PV bus FCLeynes, MBA, PEE, APEC Engr. ASEAN Engr. EE 523 Power System Analysis II Gauss Seidel Iteration Method
However, if the resulting Qi is outside of the
reactive power limit: Set Qi = Qi(max) if computed Qi > Qi(max) Set Qi = Qi(min) if computed Qi < Qi(min)
Compute the bus voltage Vi treating the generator
(PV) bus as a PQ bus (type-switching)
Iteration continues until max |ΔVi| ≤ ϵ
