Introduction

The term lifestyle often refers to the chosen aspects of a person's material life. This
includes what they eat, out of the range of foods available to them; what kind of house
they buy; what appliances and toys they buy; personal behaviors such as driving habits
or turning appliances on and off; and more. Lifestyle can refer to the non-chosen
aspects of life as well. In this broader sense, persons born in urban India are bound to
have a different lifestyle from most of those born in rural India

Lifestyle choices impact climate change because all the products and services people
use are made using materials and energy. There is broad agreement among those who
study human-caused climate change that lifestyle choices do have a significant impact
on climate, and that lifestyle is in turn affected by factors such as social expectations,
advertising, and personal attitudes toward the environment.

Historical Appeals to Lifestyle Change

Personal lifestyle changes are often urged on the public during times of crisis such as
war. Thrift is the usual theme. During World War II (1939-1945) for example, advertising
campaigns exhorted U.S. citizens to recycle scrap material and make appliances last.
For example, ads for Calvert brand whiskey urged, “Use it up or wear it out/ Make it do
or do without.” However, immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,
some public figures urged citizens to consume more, not less: for example, Mayor Rudy
2

Giuliani said, “Americans must get back to work, to go shopping, going to the theatre, to
help get the country back on a sounder financial footing.”

Scientific study of Lifestyle, Environment and Climate

A mathematical model developed by Shui Bin and Hadi Dowlatabadi in 2005 and since
adopted by some other researchers attempts to describe in detail the relationship
between lifestyle and climate. In this model, called the consumer lifestyle approach
(CLA), lifestyle is reflected in consumption behavior, or how much material and energy a
person consumes. Many factors influence lifestyle, and lifestyle in turn has

consequences for the environment. Factors that influence lifestyle include cultural
setting and changing technology; personal attitudes and preferences; household
characteristics such as number of people, income, and location; and consumer choices
about purchase and use of services and machines. Consequences that are the result of
consumer behavior include energy use (both direct and indirect) and the environmental
changes arising from that use. As of 2007, the CLA has been applied to the study of
American and Chinese energy use and the CO2 emissions arising from that use.

WHERE THE CHANGES DOES OCCURS IN THE LIFE STYLE OF

YOUTH:

Change in life style makes people materialistic. The change occurs in the life style of
young person’s as follows: Nowadays the dressing sense of the young generation has
been changed. This change is entered in our life in terms if fashion. It has taken a very
important spot in our lives. The most of the young generation follow fashion is corrupting
the young minds and they are constantly thinking about the new fashion trends and way
to get those trendy clothing and accessories. The most of young generation find the
fashion world better than any other job. And they also think that that it is very easy to
become a actor or an actress. The youth are becoming so obsessed with fashion and
waste money and time only on fashion. Fashion consciousness is increasing day by day
3

and everyone wants to look best. Technology has apparently become a dominate part
of our daily lives. Gully cricket and gulli-danda has now been substituted by Temple run
or angry birds. Though there are countless pros of technology due to which the life style
of young people has been positively affected. Every young person has enough money
to spend on various new technological items. The food habits of young generation have
been changed. Younger generation is much interested in Chinese food and other fast
food instead of simple nutrition food. KFC and McDonald have become obligatory. The
lunch boxes have been replace with thirty minute delivery from Dominos. This has
caused growing concern in national health. Worship was a very important part of Indian
life but the culture of worshipping seems to be declining in new generation as they are
picking up the modern age philosophies of the personal choices of their religion on their
own. Indian traditional system of joint family system also seems to be declining
because young generations are deciding on nuclear system. They are choosing for
more freedom oriented style of living prevalent in nuclear family lifestyle. There are so
many lifestyle choices available in Indian youth today. A hundred years ago, Indians did
not have to make cultural or life style choices like the youth do today. Today youth are
not making a well informed choice. It is not that they have examines the pros and cons
of the lifestyle which they choose or reject. It is simply a herd mentality which we all
grow up with. We follow blindly whatever our peers do. Alcoholism, drug usage and
partying at night are the present attitude of young generation which disturbs parents the
Y Singh, 1986). In modern India, it has affected the life style of young generation and
has drastically changed the beliefs, social values, moral values, traditions and culture of
Indian society. The rapidly urbanizing nation is involved in a huge shift of its population.
Urbanization leads to the process of migration of young generation from the rural area
to urban areas. This brings a huge change in the life style of the youth in India. The role
of westernization has been very significant in understanding the socio-cultural changes
of modern India. Western culture has brought about a revolution to our society. The
westernization is rapidly engulfing the minds and thoughts of our young generation.
They are forgetting their culture and manner. Westernization does not mean that one
should forget the culture of
4

their own society. Modern thoughts mean to change the mind set not appearance.
Globalization is another reason to change the life style of youth globlization is a process
of growing and expanding to exist throughout the entire world. Consciousness of
standard of life is an important factor of change in life style of young generation
industrial and technological development has brought the economic prosperity to man.
Everybody is in a mad race to improve his standard of living. The younger generation Is
much interested to improve their standard of living with all luxury items like colour
television, microwaves, computers, cars, mobile phones etc. Less involvement of family
members also change the life style of youth.

EFFECT OF THIS CHANGE:

Modern life style patterns of youth have a number of effects on health physically,
psychologically and socially: Socially, modern life affects the social relations, especially
with the use of internet to chat with others. People use internet use internet messenger
to communicate with each other. This will lead to the situation of social isolation as a
result of spending long time on the internet. As consequence, the person will isolate
himself at home and declines the involvement of family members. Due to technological
development, we could not ignore the degradation of values of our society. Younger
generation speaks lie freely and they don’t hesitate sending their parents at old age
homes. Youth starts taking drugs and alcohol and violation of rules in fashion. They
proudly admit that they drink, smoke and violate traffic rules. The new life style of
young generation is harmful to health and environment. Various cosmetic posses’
harmful chemicals that pollute indoor environment and causes various skin diseases
and health problems. The new life style of youth decline the values like truth, simplicity,
honesty, loyalty, replaced by lie, lust, jealously, anger, violation of rules, the disrespect
of elders and so on. The young generation gives priority to personal values so conflict
between personal and national values arises. Social and national values shifted to self-
interest. The young generation of India is addicted to social websites. Every day in
newspapers and on televisions we hear thousands of cases of youngsters are hacking
social sites and indulging in activities which are against the social norms of society. The
5

youth of India have been in the mood of frustration and confusion and they don’t know
about the right decision and as a result they are often found to indulge in anti-social
activities like drug peddling, smuggling to finance their flamboyant life style.

Trends in the Social Environment of Lifestyles

To analyze the future of lifestyles, we first summarized the phenomena that are likely to
affect society.

As the pursuit of economic efficiency falters and globalization advances, society is

becoming more unequal; that is, the prosperous middle class is in decline. In the future,
it is likely that the effects of a decreasing population, computerization, etc. will lead to
greater diversity in people's values and lifestyles.

Trends in the social environment of lifestyles

Hypotheses on Reasons and Motives for Future Changes in Lifestyle
When investigating the possibilities of lifestyle changes becoming mainstream, we
found that effects broadly divided into "the four risk factors" and "personal values". The
four risk factors are health, finance, communities/personal relationships, and security.

People have to make decisions about how they can realize lifestyles that will match their
own values and wishes in the future; also, they are pressured by concern about their
vulnerability to unexpected risks. We are entering an era in which people have
7

increased responsibility for dealing with risks and are worried about their ability to cope
with risks

IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON HUMAN LIFESTYLE AND VALUES

With the proliferation of technologies that are able to overcome the obstacles of time
and space (e.g., airplanes, cars, the Internet), one would think that these tools would be
used to gain an understanding of other cultures, meet people all over the world,
maintain and strengthen familial relationships, communicate effectively with others, and
help people to become more socially adept. However, some technological advances
cause people to be distracted, overly stressed, and increasingly isolated. Many people
are involved in an abundant number of relationships through technology, but sometimes
the quantity of these associations leaves people feeling qualitatively empty. Obviously,
technology has had a profound impact on what it means to be social.

Society is likely on the cusp of a social revolution, during which it will be important to
redefine socially appropriate and acceptable behaviors (with regard to digital or virtual
interaction). We are at a point in history where very few people have given critical
thought to new social realities created by technology and what those realities mean for
the individual and society. In this section we closely examine a few social technologies
that influence leisure. The section first looks at virtual communities, social networking
sites, and today's communication tools. Then we critically reflect on gaming and
television. Think about how each technology affects your social life and social skills.
Keep in mind that these are only a few of the technologies that may affect you socially.
A comprehensive list is not feasible here.

A study of students and information technology found that 85 percent of undergraduates

surveyed used social networking sites (Salaway et al., 2008) (see figure 8.2). Many of
the respondents reported using such sites daily. Figure 8.3 indicates how
undergraduate students use social networking sites. This report found indications that
use of these sites is increasing yearly. Let us now look critically at whether this trend is
positive.
8

The use of social networking sites has both positive and negative consequences. It is
amazing how someone can find a long-lost friend through a social networking site,
enabling them to reconnect. In a society where people have become quite mobile and
family and friends are often geographically separated, it is convenient to keep in touch
through technology.

However, one need not look far to find problems associated with social networking sites.
There is a lively debate about whether Internet addictions are real. To me it appears to
be a real problem (perception is often reality in a social context) with which people have
to grapple. Some assert that these Web sites contributed to cheating on significant
others, often leading to divorce. People have been fired from their jobs or put under
pressure because they use these sites at work or because something is posted on a
site that undermined the person's professional standing.

Although divorce and loss of employment are serious issues, perhaps they are not as
common as other problems that have the potential to stem from social networking
sites. Narcissism—excessive interest in one's appearance and in oneself—is
sometimes manifested on social networking sites. These Web sites have been found to
be an avenue for people to display their narcissistic traits online (Buffardi & Campbell,
2008). I often wonder whether people use these sites to display their popularity to the
world rather than use them as a vehicle to develop meaningful relationships.

Creating meaningful relationships is often about sharing our lives with others, and
technology can allow us to do so through photos, videos, text, and music. In conducting
research for my doctoral dissertation, I looked at how eight senior citizens used
technology and how it affected their lives. My hope was to find that they used
technology to stay in touch with friends, family, and people with similar interests.
Although the participants did use e-mail to stay in touch with family and friends, almost
9
all of the study participants talked about how vapid chat rooms and discussion boards
seemed to be. Most had tried chatting a few times and then gave up because they
viewed it as a waste of time (similar reasons were given by undergraduates in the
ECAR study who did not use social networking sites). However, one participant was a
chat room monitor for a fantasy baseball site. As he spent more time in that chat room
he began to realize that it was not as shallow as he first imagined. People were in that
virtual community because of a shared or common interest. Gradually he got to know
people and care about their lives. He was eventually able to meet some of these new,
online friends in person and said they connected as if they had known each other for
years.

While working on my dissertation I visited many chat rooms and discussion boards that
catered to older adults. After visiting many such sites, I began to be discouraged
because of the inane nature of many of the conversations. However, I stumbled on one
online discussion board in which two World War II veterans wrote about their
experiences in the war. They also lamented the fact that where they lived, there were no
more veterans of that war left. They felt alone and isolated, but this chat room was a
forum where they fit in again. They were able to share similar interests and experiences.

Perhaps overcoming a sense of isolation is one of the greatest features of online

communities and virtual worlds. Someone might feel like an outcast in her own
community or family but might find someone online with similar hobbies, pursuits, and
interests. Consider someone who enjoys photography as a serious leisure pursuit. This
person would be able to share that passion with people all over the world by using the
Internet and its powerful tools (e-mail, video chat, discussion boards, online video,
family Web sites). However, simply sharing common interests and pursuits with people
through technology does not necessarily have a positive impact on social skills and
social development.

Gaming and Social Development :

Gaming is an instance where you may encounter potentially serious social setbacks. I
lead a group of Boy Scouts who share a love of a certain online virtual world game. This
game seems to be all they talk about. When given other opportunities for deep,
respectful, meaningful conversation, these boys are sometimes rather inept. Although
linking their online gaming to poor social skills might be spurious, studies show negative
social impacts of some video games. One study tested whether high exposure to video
games increased aggression over time. It was found that playing violent video games is
a significant risk factor for later physical aggression in both Japan and the United
States—for boys and girls (Anderson et al., 2008).

However, linking video games to poor social skills and behaviors often misses the
bigger picture. People might participate in other activities (take football, for example) in
which the social problems that arise from the activity may be the same or even worse
than those of gaming. Evidently it is not enough to simply blame the medium. In fact, in
10
many instances, gaming may aid in relationship building. The 13th Annual MediaWise
Video Game Report Card (Walsh & Gentile, 2008) indicated that 75 percent of gamers
play with other people. Since my family received a Wii as a gift, we have spent
countless hours of enjoyment playing together. Naturally, overindulgence in this one
activity would have deleterious results, but the limited time we do spend playing
together seems to strengthen our family.

Impact of Mass media on Lifestyle and Culture:

Mass media is a form of media where transmission and communication takes place
across society to large number of people at the same time. Media can be classified as
print media which includes newspaper, magazines, journals, pamphlets, leaflets, printed
advertisements etc. whereas audio-visual or electronic media includes television, films,
radio, computers and internet etc. Mass media in India is that part of media which aims
at reach a wide audience in India. Mass media is very powerful means of influencing the
masses. There has been a tremendous growth in the field of mass media after
globalization. This has in turn affected the culture to a great extent.

Positive Impact of mass media on culture:

National Integration: Films and television promotes national integration to a great

extent. It brings people from different caste, religion, culture together. With globalization
and increase in number of channels there is one global identity over and above the
regional identity reinforcing the value of ‟.

Increase in awareness:
Mass media promotes social issues such as anti-dowry, safe sex (anti-Aids), small
family norm, employment guarantee schemes etc. This helps to create informed society

. Positive image of women:

Status of women is an integral part of the culture of any society. Mass media
highlighting the achievements of women and portraying strong women characters
change the perspective towards women.

Increase in employment opportunities:

Directly or indirectly the advertisements, channels and production houses generate a
huge scope for employment for creative and talented people.

Strengthening family ties:

11
Evenings in India have now become family get to gather time with media revolution and
certain good program. Reinforcing traditional values of eating together and living
together has strengthened family ties.

Negative impact of mass media on culture:

Promoting popular culture:

Media in a big way promotes the mass or popular culture. That sends a message what
is popular is good. It often results in complete neglect of authentic, indigenous, classical
or folk culture.

Crime and violence:

Increasing amount of violence based programs and action oriented films adversely
affects the mind set of children and youngsters. In course of imitating their favourite
stars they end up being juvenile delinquent, or indulge in anti-social elements.

Stereotypical image of woman:

Barring some good program, advertisement and daily soaps portray women in a very
bad taste. Women on screen, when used as sex symbol the mindset of the people gets
affected and treat women in the same way in real life as well.

Sensationalizing events:
Due to cut throat competition amongst the news channels and newspapers, they tend
to sensationalize events to grab audience or readers attention and increase their
viewership or readership. Paparazzi become the vital part of our culture affecting the
privacy of members of society.

Defining beauty and richness: Media has created an illusion of fantasy world amongst
its viewers. Fairness and slimness of girls are the only parameters of their beauty.
Larger than life houses and lifestyles create wrong perception of happiness in the minds
of young generation who tend to dream of such life.

CONCLUSION:

So we can conclude that there has been a great change in lifestyle of people whether it
might me technologically or due to scientific ways and modern views, it has shown
positive and negative impacts on the life of people .due to some modern views there
has been seen a great development in the society and among people. Indirectly, it has
12

played a significant role in nation’s development too. After the introduction of technology
in people’s life there has been improvement in daily life and people’s views have
become modern which used to be rigid earlier. But technology has also shown some
negative impacts like people has started online and hacking and stealing people’s
money from bank.
