SECTION – II: Paragraph Type

This section contains 6 multiple choice questions relating to three paragraphs with two questions on each
paragraph. Each question has four choices (A), (B), (C) and (D) out of which ONLY one is correct.

Paragraph for questions 29 and 30

Le-Chatelier’s Principle: According to this principle, when external factors or conditions (like P, T,
Concentration, inert gas) is applied to the chemical equilibrium, it moves in such a direction so that the effect
of external factors get annulled or minimized. On increasing pressure, the reaction moves on that direction
where volume is reduced and vice-versa. On increasing temperature or, heat, the equilibrium moves on that
direction, in which direction, heat is consumed and vice-versa. The effect of temperature has great
significance on equilibrium constants which are related as under with the equilibrium constants.

Answer the following questions on the basis of the above write up:

29. For a reaction H2(g) + Cl2(g) 2HCl(g) which is at equilibrium, following change in concentration vs
time graph is plotted. Which of the following changes at equilibrium would result in such a graph?

(A) Pressure of the system is increased (B) Catalyst is added to the system
(C) Volume of the system is increased (D) Product is added to the system

30. For an H2O(s) H2O(l) established in a container at a certain temperature, the Pressure is
suddenly increased. Which of the following changes would take place?
(A) Equilibrium shifts in the backward direction and more ice is formed
(B) Equilibrium shifts in the forward direction and ice melts to form water
(C) Equilibrium isn’t affected since  n for the reaction is zero
(D) Equilibrium isn’t affected since substances in solid and liquid phase aren’t affected by change in
pressure

Paragraph for questions 31 and 32

The compressibility factor (Z), also known as the compression factor or the gas deviation factor, is a
correction factor which describes the deviation of a real gas from ideal gas behavior. It is simply defined as
the ratio of the molar volume of a gas to the molar volume of an ideal gas at the same temperature and
pressure. Plots of Z Vs P for 1 mole of four different gases A, B, C & D at a fixed temperature is given below.

Paragraph for questions 33 and 34

33. For a reaction H2(g) + Cl2(g) 2HCl(g) which is at equilibrium, following change in concentration vs
time graph is plotted. Which of the following changes at equilibrium would result in such a graph?

(A) Volume of the system is increased (B) Catalyst is added to the system
(C) Pressure of the system is increased (D) Product is added to the system

34. For an H2O(s) H2O(l) established in a container at a certain temperature, the Pressure is
suddenly increased. Which of the following changes would take place?
(A) Equilibrium shifts in the forward direction and ice melts to form water
(B) Equilibrium shifts in the backward direction and more ice is formed
(C) Equilibrium isn’t affected since  n for the reaction is zero
(D) Equilibrium isn’t affected since substances in solid and liquid phase aren’t affected by change in
pressure

Paragraph for questions 31 and 32

31. For a reaction H2(g) + Cl2(g) 2HCl(g) which is at equilibrium, following change in concentration vs

(C) Equilibrium isn’t affected since  n for the reaction is zero
(D) Equilibrium isn’t affected since substances in solid and liquid phase aren’t affected by change in
